I'm looking for a pic of a bent TAB, and also interested to know if there were more/less auto's than 5-speeds made. I thought I saw info that showed many more 5-speeds were manufactured, but auto's seem to be everywhere....

Bent vs not bent

Rust pitted then broke. Not necessarily bent.

I remember hearing that about 1/3 were autos and the rest were manuals. It was a while ago, though, and I don't have hard numbers on that.

Click on the lower right hand corner where it says "DMC Options Mix". Actually, that entire site is really a good place for lots of other information if you haven't seen it already.

Yes this. You beat me to it!\

Here are a few TAB pics. Very slight bending that is almost invisible but could be noticed when rolling on a flat surface. Some rust in the usual places too.

Excellent....thanks everybody!

Looks like a whole lot more 5-speeds.

Great pics, a few different guys I've spoken to about it were interested to know/see more about the bolt. I'm dropping my car off on Saturday and will probably ask the guy to give mine the "turn test" I read about.

Thanks again!

Good plan. The turn test is better than doing nothing. It can reveal a bent TAB.

It will of course not reveal a "Rust pitted.....Not necessarily bent." TAB.

You might look at the overall condition of your car's frame and suspension, then decide whether you want to pull the TABs and look at them which is the next level of rigor, with the step beyond that being replacement regardless of TAB condition.

They do not only bend and break, they also get corroded so bad they won't turn or come apart easily. In such a case you have to cut it up and/or take the trailing arm off with the bushing mount and try to press the whole mess apart. The turn test is important. Just don't lose the shims or overtorque the bolt and collapse the spacer tube.
