Quadrant upper & lower plate assembly/disassembly

I have my upper & lower plate disassembled (it was half apart already.)

I need to glue it back together, but want to be able to take it apart again when I replace the quadrant slide.

What type of glue is used on these pieces?

No idea what the stock/OEM adhesion used was. For your temp purposes, I wonder if you couldn't get away with using a decent quality double sided tape...

I think the two pieces need to be squeezed tightly together to "guide" the slide. there are two plastic tab-kinda things that make contact with the slide. I like that idea, though...I wonder if I can add something to keep it guided while using the tape. It sure would make life easier to use double-sided tape & be able to peel it apart.

I decided on hot-melt glue...seems to hold well and I'll be able to get it apart again.

It appears to me I'll need to make a relief cut in the slide but I'd rather not do that unless necessary. I'm assuming the plastic shift handle is best left alone, but maybe it can be disassembled/reassembled.

Anyone have experience with this?

Unglue and reglue. Don't cut the slide, it will be too weak and just break again

The '82 on spec. AT shift handle pictured cannot be easily disassembled like the earlier assembly can. The replacement slide will generally already have the cutout needed to install it. You will however need to disassemble the shift quadrant plates to install it. It is often bonded together with "super glue". Wurth or Winzer adhesive cement also works well for rebonding the parts.

Thanks guys, the quadrant assembly isn't giving me any problem....only the slide is an issue. I have a replacement slide that has a hole in it to accommodate the shaft part of the shifter, but the key/tab-looking part[s] on the shaft shown in the pic won't pass through the hole in the replacement slide. Do I need to cut the slide, or is that black plastic shift handle part of the shifter somehow removeable/replaceable?

It kinda looks like the shift handle will come off, but I don't want to find out that it's a really bad idea to separate it after I "persuade" it to come apart.

Is the plastic handle "pressed" onto the chrome shaft? If I can safely separate them, that is the solution.

The slide has only a hole in it, no cutout. Sounds like I need to make a cut in it...any advice on that?

Your slide is probably NOS as there were 2 NOS versions. The slide you have was intended for the early to mid '81 shift handle and the later version intended for the handle style you have now. The late '81 on shift handle works better but needs to have the slide cut to install it.The slide Dave shows is the later version copied by DMCH when they remade them. Make the cut similiar to that for easy installation.

This approach worked very well. The hot-melt glue held perfectly, and today I was able to take it apart again using a little heat from a heat gun. I replaced the slide and glued it back together again the same way.

Unfortunately a hot interior in the sun is often hot enough to soften hot-melt glue. You may or my not see this depending on where/when you park the car.

The way the pieces are pressed together with enough "flat-surface contact area," I think it'll stay together even if it gets a little too warm. Like two flat plates with some kinda "goo" in between..:strongman:
