I agree. Everything about this screams that it's a fake. It's not even that good of a fake. But I do wonder what the big reveal will be. Hopefully nothing involving Shia Lebouf, though.

Big money was used to put this viral "infomercial" together. It's got to be something big like a movie.

Yeah it's very much fake (the shoulder harnesses and crane shadows are a dead giveaway), but I don't understand what the campaign's end-game is.

Well, here is our answer. Pretty anti-climatic.

Viral marketing for a BTTF reboot.

All that money spent for nothing? Wow. I'd love to know how much that cost to produce? And how does "Funny or Die" make any money or get any promotion out of it?

I still don't get it. Is it supposed to be funny? It's nothing but aggravating. Flux capacitor jokes I can take in stride, but now when idiots flock to the car, they're going to be asking me if I know about the "real hoverboards". :swear1: I will do my best to not punch them in the face, but I make no promises.

The only thing I can imagine (not far off from the awful joke James made) is that this is some kind of promo/marketing for the BTTF musical which, in and of itself, should not happen.

Well now, I know someone whose resume has just cost them future jobs by violating an NDA...

Hopefully it's for Nike reissuing MAGs with possible Power Laces, but who knows...

Oh, wait. DMC California would, as you can see Kenny Strode in that last shot of the crew...

Looks like it was a prank, pure & simple... no backstory, no promotions, etc:

It's great that they act surprised that a video they made hoping it would go viral actually went viral.

If I spent tens of thousands on a fake video I'd hope it went viral too. I still have no idea who would put up this kind of cash with nothing to promote and no financial gain. There has to be more to this video.

Says over 5 million people saw the video. What a waste of such a powerful marketing device.

Alex, they DID NOT invent the HUVr Board video for financial gain, they invented the HUVr Board video to travel through the Internets!

"But the dream of hoverskating was dashed Wednesday when Hawk unveiled the whole thing was a giant prank."

Whhhhaaaaaaattttt?!?!?!?!?! OMG, this whole time since seeing that video I thought hoverboards were finally real. Awww that news is crushing!

Yeah....

I can't believe they're "apologizing" and "confessing" that the video wasn't real. They are taking themselves waaay too seriously. Anyone who believed that video for 1 second is an idiot.

Despite a good bit of money being spent on the production (probably mostly to pay the celebs), and large cranes being used just like in filming BTTF2, and computer-removal of the wires and such, the implementation of the effect was terrible IMHO. Remember in the movie when the hoverboards lifted 8-10 feet off the ground? And when they sat at a height of 3 feet and could be used as a chair? Of course you don't, because that didn't happen. And it's not just that the movement standards of the movie boards are gospel, it's that the product is intended to be a skateboard, without wheels. At least if they stayed at "normal hovering wheel-less" skateboard height it would be even remotely plausible. But no, they made them fly around like damn spaceship boards or something.
