View Full Version : Heat & A/C Frame off for AC hose exchange?

I'm almost done with my car, but we have problems with AC hoses underneath the car.
My mechanic told me that we have to do frame off, in order to exchange the hoses which are running under the car?
Is there another way to change it? Really we have to take off again the body?

In Florida we have a place called Amazon hose and rubber. They made me a set of hoses but didn’t put the end fittings on. I was able to feed these in to the frame and take it back to the shop and they crimped the end on. It worked great and no frame off.

Do you have some photos, or detailed instructions how to do it?
It would help a lot.

Special T sells hoses that "split" with a coupling so you can pass the hoses in so you don't need to take the car to a shop to crimp ends on. He has whole kits for whatever you want to do. At the very least you should replace all 3 hoses, all of the "O" rings, and the dryer/accumulator. Flush and replace the oil in the compressor too.

That is a bad idea as it is more places to leak. Two additional connections means 8 more places to leak on the car that shouldn't be there. Not to mention the hose is 80's technology. Almost as bad as buying 30+ year old NOS rubber hoses. The only way to go is with modern aeroquip line and custom fittings.

If you get the car on a lift (with the lift under the body jack points), you can slip the hoses through without separating the body from the frame. It's pretty hard otherwise but still doable.

Two fittings vs the issues of a single hose? - come on!!

Hervey's hoses are a great deal and the ones I got were a very good quality. As far as I'm concerned two more seals is nothing - besides - they are easy to access. I've had no issues with them in 4 or 5 years they have been on the car.

Not to mention that modern barrier technology is light years ahead of the older style. By maintaining the pressure differential the system is more efficient. We have owners who state you can't run it on the max fan setting because it will freeze you out of the car.

Our outside diameter is far less compared to the bulky older style lines as well. The connection points are also maintained to the same crimping standards as modern automotive products ensuring the proper spec is maintained.

So Josh, with your hoses it is easier to install the hoses, with no need for frame separation or split hose voodoo?

Nope. with our style we are now sending one end not crimped. Slide the hoses through, orientate the end. Use the hand eatonquip tool supplied with the kit and done.

Previously until a few weeks ago our manufacture required us to purchase hose assemblies complete. From here on out we can now install without lifting the body or having a split hose.

Actually there are only 6 more possible places to leak. Your hoses would seem to be much better since they are the newer technology and you can install them without the splices. The hose is a little less flexible though.

Excellent! I was wondering when somebody was going to start using the Eaton EZ clip system hoses. (We use them on our Aircraft A/C systems at Work)

I was going to say these are field installable fittings, so a person could slide a open hose through the frame and install the fitting afterwards but you beat me too it.

Do you offer all three hoses? How do you do deal with the High pressure HUB set up? Is it something similar to the Hervey Multi-piece HUB? Prices?

I am buying hoses in the next month or two. I just sent Josh an email.

Now THAT is great!

I have the Hervey hoses - no leaks yet but I appreciate the ability to eliminate those joints. The biggest problem I had with the Hervey hoses was still fit. Apparently they make the overall hose first, then cut it and install the fittings in the middle. On my hoses they put the fittings about 6" out of position, so the fittings still had to go between the frame and body, and would not fit. I had to send half of each hose back to him (first time anyone had ever had a problem) and he sent me longer ones for those halves to move the fitting back. Overall my hoses are now too long, but it's workable.

I prefer the approach Josh has taken - sounds great. Not going to rip out my Hervey hoses just to put these in - but if they do ever fail, I have a better option now.

Josh, is the final crimp pretty foolproof?

Tom

The hose is a little less flexible though.

How so? I am familiar with this hose/fitting system. The smaller OD for the given ID make them easier to bend and manipulate. Torsional stiffness is probably a little higher (It's incorrect practice to have any unnatural twist in a hose any way) and the fittings are easily Clocked even after they are installed. (Assuming the were assembled with refrigerant oil lubricating the barbs first)

That is the style hose we use. Unfortunately off the shelf fittings do not exist for all put two connections :( That is the expensive part.

Yeah I know. I had looked into these a year ago. I take it they use the GM block style 90 fitting and add the service ports for you?

Couple of different routes you can go. That is one of them. We purchase the fittings first and modify with service ports in shop now.

I put Hervey's split hoses in my car close to a year ago and I haven't had any problems. The split design was nice although I did have to jack the body of my car about 1/8" or so in order to get the low pressure line to slide past where the frame and body meet. I didn't have to take any body bolts out, just lift the body itself every so slightly. The high pressure line was no problem.

Josh's new lines look great and I'd definitely go that route if I had to do it again but there's no way I'm tearing Hervey's lines out if there aren't any problems with them (even though replacing lines is pretty easy to do). I tend the think the 'danger' of having additional leak points with Hervey's split lines sometimes gets blown out of proportion.

This is great. I have one of those cars where the split hose would not slide in with the hose end crimped on.

Thanks for the help evreybody.
At least that's good news, that the body can stay on the frame...
That saves me a lot of money and most important - time.
Too bad, nobody did a how to do step by step video/ description.
