Carpet question - long vinyl strips on sections below doors?

I bought Houston's moulded carpet set, a question about installation...

The outer floor panels/door sill pieces have extra long vinyl strips on them that could continue to run up the rear of the door opening past the rear armrest extension, and up the front past the door closed switches - why? They are there to make something look or work better - so what do i do with them?

I figured out how much length I would need to tuck them under the other trims and then chopped the excess off. I couldn't see any purpose for them.
