Hi all, I'm thinking of changing my motor mounts. I took a few pics today. They looked cracked and engine seems to be shaking car more than normal.
Any tips or DIY on this subject? I searched and didn't see much on this. thanks for any info.

DMCH posted an item on their Facebook page back in January advising when to change engine mounts, but again no procedure. So I posted the same question and got the following response...
Chris Till I purchased replacement mounts around two years ago as mine look shot, though I've not yet installed. However I've not seen anyone discussing, or any reference in the workshop manual covering, doing this job - is there a procedure somewhere, or just a matter of jacking the engine enough to relieve pressure and clearance from the mounts to swap them over? Won't in the process cause clearance issues with the transmission or exhaust?

DeLorean Motor Company That's correct, Chris - and there are no clearance issues to contend with, either. Obviously make sure the engine (when raised) is secure as you don't want it to fall on your fingers when swapping out the mounts.

This went out on the forum in January: http://dmctalk.org/showthread.php?8979
The replies give some guidance on a procedure you might use.

Hi all. How high do you think the engine has to be raised in order to wiggle the mounts out of there? As I was looking at clearances I noticed that the left side of exhaust going into muffler has about an inch of clearance from the frame. I have an after market muffler. I attached a picture. That section is welded to the cat. Thanks for any info.

Enough to get it out of the ears on the mount. About an inch.
This is the one job that is easier with the stock exhaust than with headers.

Wow thanks Dave. This is going to be tight without loosening the cat. I can give it a try and see.

Hi all, so ya, I'm reviving this thread because I finally got my engine mount kit. Now Before I attempted, I made some measurements. I imagined lifting the engine up and checked for any clearance issues.
The only thing I noticed is that the exhaust pipe coming out of the cat loops right under the left portion of the pontoon frame, and the clearance I have is just slightly over 3/4 in.
Without taking or loosening the cat from the header, is this enough clearance?
I really hoped it would be just lifting the engine. Here is a general pic I saw online where you see the muffler loop under the frame on the left side. I have a slightly different exhaust but passage is the same.
Thanks for the info, gonna try to tackle this on the weekend but if I don't have clearance I may have to deal with the exhaust first. any tips for sliding the mounts out or wiggling them clear of the obstructions? Thanks.

You will need to loosen the R/H ext hanger and loosen (actually you'll probably have to cut it off and replace it) the clamp at the converter. Pull the exhaust tips down as far as you can before jacking up the engine until the pipes contact the rear facia cutouts.
Only then will you have enough clearance to replace both mounts and even then it's a tight fit. You may need to bend the ears on the mounts slightly but they'll pull back when you tighten things up.
Tip...jack the motor up from the pan rear edge where the bolts are...not the center of the pan. In the shop we actually lower the car onto a jackstand using the lift but you may not have that option.

Another rusty-car hint - if the double-threaded stud that goes though the engine girdle doesn't want to come out, you are probably better just re-using it. Beating on it will cause all sorts of anguish as it's in a very difficult place to access and the drill-out hole is very deep.
Also go slow taking the nuts off, you do NOT want to break that stud if its frozen into the engine.

Thanks guys, All good stuff I hadn't thought about. I appreciate all the.insight and personal experience.
I shall post some pics when this is said and done.

Ps- call me crazy but I had a revelation that maybe I can compress the exhaust pipe right under the frame, flatten it by about half an inch, to give me a bit more clearance. How? Using 2.5 inch leaf spring clamps. Hmm, even possible?
