Can I remove the engine from my auto D without removing the trans

I'll shortly be pulling the engine from my auto d to sort a number of issues.

I'm not that phased about pulling the engine, as I have a couple of helpers who have done this several times before on various DeLoreans, but they have not done one with an auto transmission.

If I want to pull the engine can the auto trans be separated from the engine whilst in the car or do I have to pull the trans as well and do the whole lot on the bench?

I've searched the forum and can see info about separating the trans from the engine but the examples I have seen are all out of the car.

Also, if indeed it can be separated in the car, is it then a pain to put the engine back in with the trans sitting in the car.

It can be pulled while leaving the trans in the car. You will need to support the bellhousing end to the frame, a 1" square tube set on the frame edge is perfect.

Remove the starter. Rotate the engine to take out the 3 bolts that hold the torque converter to the flex plate. Be sure to remove the two metal plates that screw to the bellhousing (one under and one on the side opposite the starter). Then remove the 4 bolts holding the engine to the trans. The engine will have to come rearward about an inch to disengage from the trans once lifted from the engine mounts.

It's no worse to reinstall it than with the transmission already on the engine, in fact doing it this way saves you pulling the rear fascia. The worst part is lining it up and hitting the engine mounts at the same time.
