Loud Fans

Last year my mechanic said my cooling fans were loud and I may want to consider replacing them in the future. I have nothing to compare them against. Are the new or NOS fans from DMCH quieter? Are loud fans a sign that they're on their way out?

It's kinda subjective. The original fans are noticeably loud when they come on, which probably has stuff to do with the old design of fan blade and the fact they are not enclosed like most modern cars with sound deadening material. Even new cars with elec rad fans will be loud when you open the hood and they are running high.

So if it sounds like a prop airplane, you should be fine. If you hear grinding noises, then not so much fine.

I like that the fans can be heard easily. Makes it harder to miss when they don't turn when they should be on

I agree with Exolis that it is subjective. And they are much louder than a newer car IMO. I couldn't tell you if my Pontiac fans are on at some point, but I can tell you immediately if the D fans are on.

Not knowing the background of your mechanic, but as you also mentioned about not having much to compare it to yourself, I would see about the possibility of getting in touch with another local owner and hearing his/her fans on their car. That might answer your question pretty quick by giving the noises you're hearing a relative magnitude. You could try a video on the Net with sound, but it might not put it into perspective quite as well as in person.

My stock fans were redonkulously loud as well. Their current draw was equally as offensive. You could definitely never miss the fans coming on as the volt meter would drop, engine idle would change and a jet engine would ignite under the car. But hey, they worked.

Eventually, I replaced them with these from Toby's DPNW (http://www.delorean-parts.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=DPNW&Product_Code=K4001DP-A&Category_Code=9475). they are still audible, but at least 60 - 70% quieter. The volt gauge barely moves. A good deal at $200 if you ask me.

+1 on Toby's fans, Huge difference and much more effective. I have the old stock fans if you need a 1 or 2.

Make sure the fans are firmly attached the the motor shafts and that they are spinning in the correct direction. If anything is loose, like the shroud, it will make more noise. The motors have a finite life before the brushes wear out. If the bearings are dry the motors will also be noisier than they should be. If something is out of position the fan blades could be hitting the shroud causing noise too.

Not really. They move a lot of air and you can hear it. More of a "roar" noise than anything mechanical.

In theory, if you give the existing fan blades a good clean and remove any dents etc from he edges, they should move through the air easier and more quietly. Of course, in practice it may be undetectable

Also, warmer air will move quieter and easier than cold, so things may improve in a few weeks (I can't see where the OP is located, from Tapatalk )
