I just bought the infamous "World's Fastest DeLorean" :)

Hi everyone, my name is Jim and I wanted to introduce myself to the community here. I'm sure I'll be needing your expertise over the coming months :)

I just purchased VIN 03015...aka "The World's Fastest DeLorean". It's actually on a transporter as we speak and it should be delivered in the next 48 hours. I flew to view and test drive the car, and after giving it a good shake down I decided that at the right price, it was actually a good restoration candidate. It's definitely has some rough areas and some "interesting" history, but nonetheless it's a really unique car that I'm happy to have in my collection.

My goal is to return it to it's original Gale Banks glory (I'm 90% confident that this was the Gale Banks car based on registration and insurance history). It's had some odd changes made to it since it had the original engine swap in 1988, but most of it should be reversible. The car ran surprisingly well when I test drove it. Yes, the clutch is terrible, but it's not as bad as the open-wheel Formula car that I once owned. The engine is making significant power....when it's not cutting out due to faulty RPM sensors :)

How far of 'restoring' are you considering? Just exchanging those silly looking wheels or even the engine?
And if you wanted to buy an original Delo, why did you buy a completely modified one? There are several originals out there at great prices that need a retouch.

I'd say keep that Buick in there since you bough the WORLDS FASTEST DELOREAN and "clean it up" a little cause I remember it had a few technical issues.

I believe Don has had that car on consignment for a few years now, glad to see someone snag it up. Truth be told it crossed my mind to buy it.

I kind of like the wheels, they don't go with the car, they belong to it. It's like when you hear the phreae "Make it so"...you know you are watching ST Next Generation. When you read the letters "JZD" you automatically think of Mr. DeLorean, and when you see those rims....you know you are looking at the G.N. Buick DeLorean.

Yes, it’s subjective until a shootout proves otherwise, but in the mean time, considering its history, let’s give this car the benefit of doubt and let it keep the rights for now. At such time the shootout occurs, I’ll change the two winners (stock and engine swap) to reflect the new claim.

(Isn’t it cool how everyone has already agreed to a shootout, but the owner?) :)

Heck, maybe this shootout thing could become an event that occurs every two years, coinciding with DCS.

Yep, I'm planning on keeping the Buick engine in there due to "historical significance" haha. It's actually a pretty decent setup, but over the years the original configuration has been neglected. My goal is to get it back to the way it was converted in 1988 by Banks --

The Banks setup was originally carbureted, with a 650 CFM Holley. At some point the owner decided to switch it to fuel injection and have Duttweiler build the engine. The switch from carb to FI wasn't as clean as I would hope.

First order of business is restoring the interior to stock. The instrument cluster add-on is horrifying. The new gauges actually work...but they don't actually help you determine any of the data that they are showing :)

Also, I want to say that I have massive respect for all of the **truly** fast DMCs out there, your LSx included. I've been watching your build for many, many months and considered doing my own swap along the same lines. However, when I saw that the Buick TT car was available, I decided to jump on it since someone had done a lot of the hard work already. My car should be referred to as the "FORMER World's Fastest DeLorean" until I can prove otherwise :)

I'm lucky to have a Mustang MD500 Awd Dyno in my shop, so I'll be sure to post initial dyno pulls next week. Most likely it'll grenade...but that gives me a reason to re-do it the right way!

Since that car's build there have been some advancements in reenforcing the transaxle. A one piece input shaft, a Quaiffe differential, and better oil. Look to what has been done for the Lotus to "harden" the trans. Even with all of that you can still (in the Lotus V-8) rip the teeth off the crown gear and that car only has 350 HP. I agree you have a piece of automotive history there. You biggest decision, as in any restoration, is exactly what period you want to restore it to. One of the first steps is to try to gather as much documentation as you can so when you do decide then at least you have some kind of roadmap as to what it should look like. For instance if you want to return it to how Gayle Banks built it then you are right, the EFI has to come off. I am sure many on this forum will like to be kept informed on your progress. Maybe you can clean it up enough to bring to DCS in Ohio this year. I am sure Ken K will find you a place of honor to show it off!

Another thought is that EFI technology has come a LONG way in recent years. Adaptronic and Megasquirt are just some of the brands when setup right would surely give you the best performance from your setup although I guess you'd need to find a map already used by other users of that engine...

A lot of expertise is available out there to help you get it right should you want to leave carbs in the past... :)

I don't think anyone will begrudge you for removing those wheels. Like you pointed out, most folks feel the stock turbine wheels are a pretty iconic part of these cars. I'm glad to see this car has finally found a home, and will be returned to it's former glory. :thumbup:

yeah just lift on the fiberglass corners, it will hold. just try not to open or close the doors while supported on the lift.

I believe this weird linkage is responsible for some of my clutch issues...it appears to be a stock slave cylinder mated to a custom pivot/linkage so that it would clear the bellhousing. I'll see if some lube helps.

The TABS are not stock... they look similar to ones you can buy from John Hervey.

That's the Addco rear swaybar. Notorious for cracking that area of the frame due to how thin the metal is.

Ha, it sure does. Sorry I didn't see your first post until now. I have sourced a few Banks Turbo parts for an upcoming tear-down and restore, hopefully I can get the engine bay looking a bit better. My immediate concern is getting the car a little more drivable so that I can diagnose additional drivetrain issues on the dyno. Right now the clutch is too "binary" to drive it on the dyno. I don't want to launch into our tuning room :)

I think your plan is great, it's what I'd likely do with the car. As much as I like the idea of things being "original"...I'm a huge fan of improvement too. ;)

The engine (4.1 liter Buick Grand National Stage Block) has been delivered to my engine builder. Unfortunately it was in pretty bad shape, apparently run without oil for an amount of time. The bearings were down to the copper :(

Now she's getting new pistons, rods, crank and so on. I'm considering a naturally aspirated build at this time since there isn't a good solution for intercooling for the twin turbo setup. The original setup relied on water-meth injection, but I'm not a big fan of that for a regular driver. I'm confident that we can get 350hp from the GN engine without boost. If it's not enough, we can always add boost later.
