View Full Version : Transmission 5-Speed Ummm.. do I need this part? :)

Ok, I'm getting ready to mate the trans and engine together.

I've carefully made notes, photos, bagged and tagged the parts.

I have no recollection or photos of this part. Its it possible my car did not have it or it's a non used legacy part?

Dont put it in. If it isnt there, someone has had the box out of the car before. The bolts are extremely hard to access to remove due to the frame. Usually you have to jack the engine up, then undo the bolt as far as you can then hit it with a hammer and chisel to bend the bolt so it can be removed.

Ok, I have the trans out of the car. I could install one, but I guess it's not necessary then?

As the trans is facing the opposite direction to what it would be if the engine was in the front of the car it is unlikely that road debris will get in there, up to you if you put one in, it will not be an easy task getting it in there, or getting it out next time you do the clutch. I have a large chunk of epoxy missing off my crossmember from trying to get one of the bolts out too.

If you've got the trans out, personally I would put it on. Regardless of how unlikely it is that something would get in there, Murphy's law always prevails.

You can't put it in until the engine and trans are mated up. Then it's a huge PITA to install, and protects the flywheel from the frame :dunno:

What about using some silicon to hold the plate in place? It could then be pried out if needed...? I'm making this up as I go...

You can do anything you want, but the part is 100% redundant to the frame. You could also install it using only the two outer bolts. It's not going anywhere.

Sorry I'm confused.. I can skip this part then with pretty much no ill effects?

Yes. . . .

Actually we use it as a telltale. If the plate is still there, the clutch is original.

There is a plate on the other side (with the sensor) that was left dangling on my car. My car did get a new clutch by the PO so I guess they just gave up on installing that one also.
