Questions about wings a loft and stereo upgrade

I am finally in a position to purchase a DeLorean and had a few questions.

First, I live in the midwest and was wondering if the wings aloft system could be purchased from DMC Midwest. Just trying to save on shipping.

Next, Does the remote start have a safety feature such as it doesn't start unless it's in neutral?

Finally, Has anyone upgraded their stereo system to a flip out touch screen? If so how do you like it? I would assume it covers the air vents.

Re. the Stereo: When I bought my car, it had a flip-out touchscreen. It did cover the air vents, which was kind of annoying. But, the reason I got rid of it was because it was too distracting (the interface wasn't intuitive enough and the damn thing always needed readjusting to properly see it in different light). It seems that lots of D owners have them, and I can certainly understand why, but it wasn't for me. My two cents

It is possible to relocate the vents to the knee pads. Much better airflow too.

Yes, there is a safety lockout. It's kind of complex on a manual but it's there. Assuming you follow the installation instructions and don't bypass any of the safety sensors. It is a shutdown sequence that you have to follow that "convinces" the computer that the car is idling, in gear, with the parking brake engaged, and the doors closed, with you outside when you turn it off via the remote. Not completely foolproof, if you shut it down according to the protocol and then happen to move the shifter into a gear while it is parked (somehow without opening a door first), it will start in gear as there are no electrical sensors on the transmission (other than reverse lights). I'm personally not a huge fan of remote start systems on manuals as there is a lot to go wrong.

An automatic car will normally only start in Park or Neutral anyway so it's relatively simple to lock that out by installing the remote start in line with the safety switch/relay.

As for flip-out stereos, Yes, and it covers the vents when open unless you do something fancy like move the vents (there are several write-ups on the forum about other installations, but they often involve re-engineering the console plate).

For the stereo - I ran a unit similar to this for several years - it was adequate in that it had GPS and it did not block the air vents:

It partially blocked the headlight and hazard switches, but once you set the angle on the screen it was not bad.

Today though I have no use for the larger screen - I would instead spend time working on a mount for your cell phone that will make you happy (depends on if you are right or left handed. A good place to start is at proclipusa.com - no dedicated solution for Delorean but excellent options for whatever phone you happen to have. Typically you choose your phone, and your car, and it gives you compatible two part solutions that are tailored to your specific phone and your specific car. I have this in my Volt and its great - worth every penny. I intend to look through their universal products to find something that will work well on my D in the near future.

I assume your primary desire for the larger screen is GPS? I have to say that Waze is by far the best GPS I have ever had, and it runs on my smartphone. It is free, has absolutely up to date maps (you can even submit revisions if you find something wrong), has real time traffic and alerts for traffic, up to the minute info on speed traps, road hazards, etc - and most important great rerouting. When you are fighting traffic you can easily look for a better route based on real time conditions. The GPS built into your head unit will likely have none of that.

Once you have that, plus Stitcher, Pandora, etc you have in your phone already 99% of what you could ever hope for from a double din stereo at a much lower price, and its always current and up to date. There are some excellent options then in a single din form factor that fill in the rest of what you would want to do.

I bought that same unit over a year ago and still haven't installed it. The main thing I don't like about it is that the screen Doesn't fully retract into the main frame.
I've ended up enjoying, (for the moment), my stock Craig unit. If I want to listen to mp3's from my phone, I use a cassette adapter or wireless FM adapter.
For GPS I use my smartphone or tablet.

I installed a flip up screen with swapped air-vent location so that it doesn't block them. The modification is fairly straightforward but it would be a lot of hassle to dismantle the dash and heater box just for that : we did it as the car was being built.

I agree :thumbup: It sounds like a powerful V8 Hot Rod. But, it is our much maligned PRV V6. It does have a Stage II upgrade from DMC Houston so the High Performance Cam does help the idle sound bad.

Might be an exhaust leak. I had one for awhile and it made my PRV sound a bit mean. I fixed the leak but I still get a bit of a rumble because I think some of the interior of my muffler are rusted away.
In short, any number of "faults" in the stock exhaust chain can beef up the rumble.

Might be an exhaust leak. I had one for awhile and it made my PRV sound a bit mean. I fixed the leak but I still get a bit of a rumble because I think some of the interior of my muffler are rusted away.
In short, any number of "faults" in the stock exhaust chain can beef up the rumble.

Nice... It was difficult to tell from the angle but you can usually spot the Stage II from the back.
Upgraded exhaust and lowered suspension are on my grail list but I just can't see dropping nearly $5000 into it right now.
