Hi there. As I am writing on my thread about VIN 3305, I'm overhauling almost the whole braking system. My aim is to basically get to every single part and clean it and blasting it and so on.

I disassembled one of the hand brake calipers, and I could get some pieces (springs and other things).Have you got some kind of a technical scheme or a picture that shows how must I put back together all the pieces I found in the hand brake caliper? Sounds like an old clock to me, must be simple but I can't figure out (and I don't remember how it was made) how I have to reinstall all that stuff inside the caliper! :what_the:

I have the other caliper to disassemble, I will take a photo before taking everything out, but if there is some sort of expode-a-view of that particular thing I would be glad!

:D :D

Thanks !

This probably doesn't help very much. I'll look through the shop manuals tonight and see if I can find something better

may I suggest the best man in our continent?
Ward engineering!
Turned around my handbrake calipers at a point I though they were trash...
No only that... The came back and looked like new!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ward can refurbish your complete braking set. The only thing that stings is the shipping back and forth to the UK.

The results are rewarding:yesss:

Alex that would be too easy! :p I WANT to achieve that by myself! :cool1:

Anyway, L:06:01 on workshop manual covers the hand brake caliper in a very schematic way, but I would want something more detailed, it's like the picture on the manual is very far and I need to zoom in!

Looks like the shop manual is posted out here if that helps. http://dmctalk.org/showthread.php?102-Workshop-Manual

Search in the " How to" section. There is an awesome layout from an old DMCWORLD mag (I believe). Shows how to rebuild them completely, I followed it from top to bottom and it was great. My hand brake was not working what so ever. After following the instructions, cleaning, relubeing, and adjusting the pad they worked beautifully! Can't suggest it enough!

All right thanks everybody! :) Kerichbe as I said I looked in the workshop manual (the Bible! :D ) but the pictures is someway too "small"... I'm gonna dig into the "how to" section, but as far as I can imagine it must be a very simple mechanism!

Ciao Giovanni!

You may find the article in the first post of this thread helpful:

http://dmctalk.org/showthread.php?1939-Rebuild-Your-Brake-Caliper

While it is titled brake caliper rebuild and mostly revolves around the hydraulic brake calipers on all four wheels, the final two pages (of seven) have some good images of the parking brake assembly that will hopefully help you get the puzzle put back together :)

Ok it's getting clearer! Uhm the pic is small, yet effective... I'm going to do some functional tests before closing everything up again! Still I've got so much to do so it will happen in some times!

I'll let you know!

Maybe these pics will help you? It's not a complete step by step, but it shows all the parts you need for one ebrake and various stages of assembly.

Note, the picture below shows a new threaded insert I had to install into this outer cover. Most likely you will not need to do this step. I had install a new insert to because it is made of aluminum and had to be removed prior to zinc plating.

I'll see if I can find the disassembly photos I took...I basically followed them in reverse to rebuild each Ebrake.

Lesson: Take a shitload of pictures when you're taking something complicated apart (like the ebrake)

That's what I'm talking about! Great shots Mark, there are a pair of pictures that will surely help me out! :nana2:

You did an awesome job there! The same thing I want to do with mine... you see, I have not my license plates yet so I don't need to go anywhere, that means that I can leave my car with out brakes for a while... it will surely make the difference I hope! :)

Are there any other parts that can not be zinc-plated? You mentioned the thread head... since I want to plate as much elements as I can I would like to know what is good and what's not!

Thanks again, that's a wonderful result!

:hihi:

I found all the pics of when I originally disassembled everything. Here they are in disassembly order. Follow them in reverse to reassemble.

Are there any other parts that can not be zinc-plated? You mentioned the thread head... since I want to plate as much elements as I can I would like to know what is good and what's not!

You can see which parts I replated in yellow zinc, but some of the other parts were done in plain/clear zinc. The yellow dichromate finish is a bit thicker than the clear chromate so the plater I used just did clear zinc on all the hardware and threaded parts so the threads would not be overloaded with coating.

I cleaned up the two small springs but did not plate them, nor did I plate the black ratchet/pawl for the auto adjuster. The small pins I just cleaned up with a scotch brite pad and made sure to grease them during reassembly to prevent rust.

If you don't have a rivnut gun and an assortment of rivnuts I'd recommend picking up a set. They are cheap on ebay and usually come with a few sizes of rivnuts and the installation heads for the gun. I was lucky that there was a 5mm rivnut in the assortment that was nearly identical in size to the original threaded insert on that small cover plate. I hadn't planned on needing to replace it so I kinda lucked out there. I originally bought my rivnut gun to replace some of the larger 6mm rivnuts for the fiberglass access panels in the bonnet.

And like I said before, if you're taking stuff apart take a bunch of photos. I took over 1000 when I tore my chassis completely apart and it saved me a bunch of time when I went to reassemble everything. From start to finish it took me over a year and a half to completely restore my chassis. I knew there was no way I was going to remember how I took something apart a year prior when it came time to reassemble.
