I was separating the engine and transmission last night, and this happened:

Do I need to replace the lip seal or anything else? Did I damage anything here? Is this normal?

Thanks,

Just pull the shaft out of the converter and put it back in the trans. Make sure the splines seat all the way. First roll it across something smooth to make sure you didn't bend it.

You may as well replace the seal "while you are in there" but it does not appear to have been leaking.

Thanks. I didn't recall it doing that before!

If it's not damaged, I probably won't replace it. I'm on a timeline, and don't want to wait a few more days for it to get here. I was worried I'd messed it up.

The goal is to have this car up and running before Sept 2nd.

if he reuses the seal should he apply and sealant or other lubricating compound to the existing one?

I'd put some ATF on it but it's probably pretty oily anyway. If he takes the seal out it would get ruined.

It would be a good idea to replace the seal. It all depends on what you are eventually going to be doing with the transmission. If you are not going to tear it down then just replace the seal. As mentioned it would also be good to make sure you didn't bend the pump shaft. I would also suggest pouring out as much fluid from the torque converter as you can, removing the pan and draining more, and cleaning or replacing the filter. Don't forget to put fresh 85-90# gear oil in the final drive and check all of the external adjustments when you put the transmission back. Make sure you have the torque converter inserted ALL of the way back. You should have marked the position of the flex plate to the torque converter. All of the bolts will only fit up in one position.
