Contemplating making the trip in my DeLorean

I'm contemplating driving my DeLorean to the DCS. My first consideration would be making sure it's road-worthy, and I can probably manage that.

Second, I'd want to be prepared for a worst-case scenario (I break down along the way and unable to get myself back on the road.) My first thought at that point would be to contact the nearest DeLorean club or owner. I would be traveling from upstate NY (near Lake George) to Dayton.

I've driven across country a few times and made several 600 mile trips so this wouldn't be my first rodeo, but I'm a new owner and it's been a while since I've needed to perform roadside repairs on any vehicle.

Any thoughts, opinions, or advice?

No matter what car I'm in I always carry a few things for a road trip.
Tool kit
roadside kit (zip ties, hose tape, rags, hose clamps, fuses, etc.)
fully charged jumper box with USB ports
a GOOD flashlight
blanket
a quart of oil and a gallon of pre mixed coolant.
can of fix a flat and plug kit

That's for any car, for a Delorean I would carry a jumper wire for the fuel pump relay and a spare alternator belt.

that's all I got off the top of my head. I'm sure others will expand.

Bring extra coolant & water, brake/clutch fluid, jumper cables, cell phone charger and cell phone! AAA would be a good idea, too.

I'm driving from Orlando. Travel kit includes jumper pack with built in air compressor, craftsman wrench/socket set, bag of assorted hand tools, spare fuel pump, serpentine and AC belt, electrical connectors and wiring, tire plug kit, usually a couple other things.

Go into Canada via Niagara Falls and I can meet up with you in Detroit :thumbup:

It's only an extra hour for you (70 miles).

Here are the three things that I always have in my car:

1 - Spare coolant.
2 - Jumper wire (or thick paperclip) for the RPM relay.
3 - Spare belts - at the very least the serpentine.

Here are some additional considerations:

4 - Assorted tool kit.
5 - Jumper cables.
6 - Spare fuel pump (if yours is questionable).
7 - Spare alternator (if yours is questionable).

Other than that, make sure that your doughnut is good and holding air. If not, tube it or put a new tire on it. Also make sure that you have a jack in the car and that it works.

And the most important thing to have on any long trip:

8 - Good tunes :thumbup:

I was phrasing my response off his post and didn't realize what I was saying - I meant the belt for the alternator and water pump.

A/C belt isn't critical (at least not to me anyway - especially since I've never had operable A/C on my car - hopefully that changes in time for the show, as I'm working on it). First trip in my car was in 90F+ temps and a blazing sun to Mount Rushmore and back. Windows down and it was still a stainless oven, but it didn't bother me that much. Just keep properly hydrated :smile:

Whatever you are carrying with you, know what to do with it if you need it.

The jumper wire is a good example. Keep cheat sheets printed and store them in the car. Or have all your break down how-to's on your tablet or phone with you. There is/was a road side break down handbook consisting of about a dozen pages made by Grady I think it was once upon a time that showed how to do all these little things. If you can get your hands on that document, keep it in the glovebox. You can access the forum here of course, but connecting and getting responses can be more hit and miss than you might like on the side of the road.

And with the spare tire, do a quick check or test in your driveway that what you have in the car is actually what you will need in a pinch. A lug nut wrench that will work, the jack you carry is ok, etc. I realized a couple seasons later that when I had my winter tires on my DD that the lug nut wrench in the car wasn't the same size as the lugs on the winter tires. I have two sets for the slightly different sized nuts and didn't think anything of it because when I change my tires I'm always at home. Best way to know is to test it in advance.

Knightflier Josh prodded me to drive my car to DCS and I'm really glad I did. It was amazing to pull into a parking lot full of DeLoreans....loved it.

The 1360 mile ['round] trip was mostly trouble-free except for my wipers failing in the first 5 miles, during a downpour. I was relieved to learn a DeLorean windshield sheds rain really well, so no worries. I also had a dash bulb intermittently fail on the way to the show, and my speedometer failed as I left the show.

I unfortunately had no A/C for the ride there. I McGuyver'd a strip of thin plywood in the passenger window to pull air in. While at the show, I met Bill Robertson and he led the charge (pun) to get my A/C working so I wouldn't have to drive home in the middle of the night (to try & stay cool.) Special thanks to Steve Rice, Dave McKeen, Matt Barney, Andrew and Jeremiah for helping or offering to help (Josh was shackled to his car, but he had gauges we borrowed.) I had a nice cool ride home and I'm very thankful for that....it was high 80's on the way home.


So the trip went well and I'm looking forward to 2016!

I put the two overheating pages into a pdf file, attached.
Not clearer than the jpg versions when blown up, but at least it can be handy to have them all together as one file type, if you are keeping them on your computer or a tablet or something...
