I ordered SEM solve for prepping my vinyl for re-dyeing, but it won't be delivered until next week. Any suggestions for a substitute?

Thanks!

I have used rubbing alcohol as a prep after a thorough cleaning with plain old soap and water. Try to find the 92% or you might trap some moisture in the grain with the standard 70% isopropyl. Most prep products made specifically for paint are mainly degreasers. The alcohol takes care of this, though I cannot speak to the SEM lines performance. Sometimes I wonder if some prep products are overpriced and uneccessary.

Thanks, I'll see what the stores have for %.

That has me thinking; I used engine degreaser to prep my louvre and [I think] it worked great without any issues. I wonder if I could safely do the same with the vinyl.

I have SEM Solve and the stuff is pretty unique to itself. I'd be concerned about anything else being too harsh on the vinyl. I feel like there's a conditioner additive added to the prep agent. I'd think something else would be too harsh and potentially cause the vinyl to dry and crack, particularly alcohol.

If anything, I'd use a mild soap and water rather than anything else. I'd imagine engine degreaser would be way too harsh on the vinyl.

The good thing about SEM Solve is that a little of it goes a very long way. You could probably do 2+ cars on a single can.

I should mention I too like to buy the specific prep products but the alcohol is a good go-to in a jam because most of your drug stores like Walgreen/Rite Aid/CVS carry the 92%. It is certainly safe enough for a vinyl wipe down. Engine degreaser is probably more aggressive.

Why is it even called leather dye? Let's be honest, it's more like paint, like a respray. Rich, are you using the Acura charcoal grey color or black?

If you have the time wait for your order. Perhaps you are finished already.

Acura Grey.

Not finished....and you're right, it's best to wait. I just got in from doing other things on my list besides the vinyl. I have all those pieces out, I really wanted to get it done this weekend but it'll have to be this upcoming week.

Since I'm just catching the tail end of this thread, where are you guys getting your dye from? I have a black knee pad needing attention. I've dyed an interior of my old lotus esprit 10 years ago with a product line called leatherique out of Florida which was great line up of products. Their leather rejuvenator was amazing. Massage in, cover seats etc with trash bags, put car in sun for a day and bam! Glove soft. Dying went amazingly well. They suggested using lacquer thinner to remove old dye which worked great to strip the color off leather, but vinyl, I think would be way too harsh.

You know, it's amazing you commented Vixen. If I'm not mistaken, 10 years ago, your website is what turned me on to Leatherique products.

+1

The Project Vixen website also played a pretty big role in my early obsession with DeLoreans as a kid.
