was just wondering what the HP differences are between the stage 1 and 2 engines?
The Stage 1 upgrade is more for the exhaust note and the elimination of the hot air intake hose. Although your gas mileage and hp increase slightly, it's not a huge difference. It gets about 1 to 2 mpg more than the stock motor. The Stage 2 has 80 more hp than the stock motor. To me the Stage 2 is only beneficial if your motor blows up or if you just have $5,000-$7,000 to spend. The Stage 2 gets around 23 to 25 mpg with premium fuel.
197HP Having just installed a new Stage 2 motor (DMCMW) I would NOT go back to stock. it is a world of difference. I run 93octan and get 20 mpg, there is much more power in the car, if you need to get moving fast or merge onto the intersate, no problem, the car has your back.
It looks awesome, sounds good, and drives great.
At first it was loud inside the car, but now I'm used to it. If you can upgrade to Stage II do it.
I'm about 75% done with "restoring" my car. I'm putting in the headlight upgrade kit next week.
The compression ratio is not increased by going to Stage II, so there should be no need to use anything other than 87 octane, just like the stock engine.
It's recommended due to a more aggressive cam and ignition timing. Try different fuels, if it doesn't knock it's OK.
i think i might just save up for the stage 2 then. around 200 HP, sounds good to me .
The stage II is actually 198 BHP, not HP. Basically the HP without any accessories added to it. Ultimately the stock engine puts down about 100HP at the wheels while the Stage II puts down 130HP. Still not a bad jump when you consider that's 30% more!
Is that with an automatic or manual transmission? I'm not trying to go off topic but I am getting consistant gas mileage between 22 and 25 mpg with combined city/highway driving and I have a manual transmission.
I have no clue what my horsepower is but I'm sure my mods have increased it slightly.
I'd assume it's with an AT. I get around 25 doing mostly city driving and if I cruise solely on the highway and set the cruise control for 65, then I can get 32 MPG out of the car with my 5-speed.
Stage II and with lowered springs and suspension. That made the big difference in fuel economy.
I've noticed that Houston no longer has a price displayed for the Stage II engine. Additionally, if you go to the parts page where is shows the crate motors, it says no stock and a $0.00 price. Are the crate motors running out or something?
Last I heard they are saving the last of the full crate motors for the Stage III packages. Stage II's are now only done on exisiting engines.
Mine was going to be a Stage II upgrade to my motor I had, but ened up getting a new block, So I ened up with a Stage II crate Engine, but doing it the hard way. It was a $10,000.00 upgrade
I think you can get the Stage II crate for $9,000.00
id be interested to hear your impressions of each after a few weeks of driving both.
eeeexcellent.

I took some photos of my motor. This was installed/built in June 2011. I have 1,125 miles on it now.

I got my Stage II done down at DMCFL. I used to have a black throttle cover plate, but when I got the car back it was not installed. I also was told to run premium fuel, and noticed a significant increase in fuel milage (23-26mpg) this modification was performed to a stock engine will less than 20,000 . Besides the StageII I also had other work done down there. The StageII mod has performed well, but the "fixed" door locks broke again by the time I hit Jacksonville and a few weeks later one of the top nuts on the fwd drivers side Eibach shocks came off. I'd love to get one of those cool stainless steel cover plates with the DMC logo.
On a side note does anybody know what will have to be done to a Stage II engine if one wants to take there StageII to a StageIII?
Call DMCMW, they get them over in Europe.
That is a very nice Stage 2 engine!:thumbup2:
What does DMC do with the over-50k engines they remove from Stage II and III customers' cars?

I loved my Stage II upgrade for the whole week it ran when I got it back from DMCFL. My engine had 12k on it when I sent it down, she came back with a totally different breather, mine still had the DMC sticker on it, the sticker wasn't road rashed or worn or anything. When I got it back I had a plain black breather box with no sticker, I didn't get my Stage II badge in the engine compartment and as stated before the car ran exactly one week, I was fortunate enough to get it in the garage and she has laid there dormant ever since. I believe my bill came to a little over 10k including a rear main seal that if anyone at a show ever asks me about I'll be glad to tell them about. I wish I would have waited a while before I blew that wad of cash down there, I would have sent it to Josh instead.
As I have been made aware of this thread I will say that when a car needs 10 things done to it and you only do 5, but one of them has to be a Stage II upgrade the rest of those items still need to be done or the car will not run for long.
That said, any work done at DMC Florida I am 100% responsible for and will honor, cover and or redo the job if necessary for free.

One thing I will say, negatively, about the Stage II is the Nology coil wiring. I think its useless and, as a result, leaves an unwanted component on the fiberglass. I also intend to remove the "Stage II" plaque from the engine, as it has resulted in more people asking me if my car is "one of those new ones they're building in Texas" and I don't care to explain that as often as it makes it necessary.
The hose kit is from DMC Europe- the main cooling hoses left and right off the pipes have the DMC logo printed upside down so you can't see it. They have changed the printing of it now.
A while back I helped a local owner out with his car. He was very lucky and not only got it cheap, it had recently got a Stage II engine! He didn't know anything about it and when he called DMCH to get some information on it James Espey offered to buy it from him for a lot more than he paid for it! Anyway it had been sitting for a while and the master cylinder was leaking so bad he couldn't drive it. After replacing it and driving the car it ran like sh-t. The motor had no power and a loud rapping noise from the left valve cover. It had only a few miles on it since it got the Stage II. I pulled the valve cover and the lifter for the front, left cylinder's intake valve adjuster had unscrewed itself and was laying on the cylinder head. I put it back together and adjusted it and checked the other valves which were OK. When DMCH built the engine they must have forgotten to tighten the adjuster. Anyway, once done the motor ran GREAT! I was very impressed with the performance and thought the Stage II label was a nice touch. IMHO if you have a Delorean with a blown motor a crate Stage II is worth considering. They did a great job creating the Stage II and can only imagine what the III will do! I would be careful doing it to an automatic, the transmission probably won't last very long with all of the additional power it has to handle.

Apologies, I was not intending to "bash". I should clarify that in regards to the retaining nut that some how rattled off the front shock, a new one was shipped to me free of charge, and all I had to do was put it on, no damage. As for my door lock issue, a solution was never agreed upon by Ken and myself. However the car will be being brought to a very reputable mechanic next Monday, and troubleshooting the door locks will be on the list of "to do's". I can forward the invoice if you like.
