Best replacement for starter?

I'm getting paralysis by analysis.

About a year ago, I contacted "Baulerle Automotive" because of an issue that I was having with my starter only to find out that Dave had sold the business. The new owner (I believe his name may have been Jason? It's been a year now) suggested some tips for troubleshooting and, ultimately, suggested that I purchase a replacement starter from Delorean Go, which I did.

I was contemplating an installation today but noticed two things:

1) This starter motor is made by RollCo and, through all of my searches of this forum and the varied discussions about starters, this item was NEVER mentioned (usually the Eagle, of course).
2) This 1.3kW RollCo starter motor ALSO requires some modification to the wires (i.e. cutting?). Exact instructions: "Connect both yellow/blue and white/red wires here" with "here" being a spade terminal on the solenoid. (The other 2 terminals are, I believe, the positive power and the connector from the solenoid to the actual starter).

Long story short -- Due to the relative/complete lack of discussion about this SPECIFIC starter as well as the potential permanent alteration to the wiring (I'm the owner of 4635 and, let me tell you, a permanent alteration to the wiring is the LEAST of the concerns with that specimen, but I digress...), I'm wondering if the 1.7kW motor from Delorean.com (which, according to their documentation, requires no modifications) would be a better option for replacement?

I saw that it MAY be possible to create my own adaptor so that I wouldn't have to alter the actual car wiring. But, since I'm either going to be struggling to make this repair myself or struggling to find a local shop in Michigan that would do it (I've already tried once), I would prefer to make sure that it's a quality replacement job.

Does anybody have any experience with the RollCo or an opinion on my best move?

You should have bought one from autozone, lifetime replacements. Can you send it back? I think you add a ring terminal, it's been a while since I did it. you don't have to alter the car's wiring.

FYI - Dave Bauerle works out of his home shop. You can get his contact info from the DCO page.

The guy who bought his business is a crook. You are very lucky you did not take your car there for service. See this post for just one issue with the guy who bought Dave's business.



Not to take work away from Dave Bauerle (my friend since 1996), but not sure where you are in MI, I know Munk's Motors is a trusted shop in Waterford that works on some local's Ds. We had a tech day there way back in 2006.

You can also check out DOOM (DeLorean Owners Of Michigan), we just had a tech day in Detroit this past Saturday helping out each other with tortion bar adjustments, roof box riveting, window fixes, brake upgrades, ac recharging, etc.

No need to overthink this one, though.

When my D starter gives up I will get the DeLorean Classic offering that you mention. It has the same design advantages the other options have and, like you say, no mods are needed.

You can look up the 1988 Eagle Premier 3.0 on Rockauto and find numerous starters there, some of which are the 1.7kW version. I have been running the 1.4kW Remy 16894 for decades first on the original 2.8, then the Volvo 2.8 B280F, and now the Eagle 3.0. Absolutely 0 issues. All of these starters will require you to either connect the blue/yellow and white/red together (you can use ring terminals on both at the stud on the starter instead of splice them together) or keep the blue/yellow wire disconnected and tied out of the way. The delorean starter is the same thing, just coming with new bolts and a new collar should you not want to use the one you already have installed.

The only "cutting" of wires needed is to replace the spade connector on the blue/yellow wire with a ring connector, or you can just make a jumper wire with a ring connector on one end and spade on the other to install on the starter with the white/red wire, which is most likely what the delorean starter has to make it "plug and play" for an extra $80.
