eBay Fire DeLorean Sold - General opinion of values welcome

This car apparently sold for $7,501 with a charred rear end, non-stock engine and salvage title.

Seeing this, what are people's opinions about the value of a non-running, clear title, cars with decent stainless and frames but interiors that need rehab?

I think you'll be surprised what a parts car without body damage goes for. You will probably make more on that one than on the good one!

Yeah, there's a trend right now of them getting listed on eBay in the $30k range. Everbody sees the current listings and thinks that's what they're getting for them, but nobody looks at the completed listings. They're still selling in the 20's on average. A couple higher (really nice), a couple lower (parts), but the majority just don't sell at all because they set the reserve high. They get bid up to the 20's, but don't sell... 30's don't even get bid on. I hope this hubbub calms down soon. I'd like to purchase one without the ridiculous pricing.

I'm looking to buy in about 8 months. My anticipated range is $28-$35K for a car in good enough condition that I'd feel okay flying across the country and driving it back (as is the plan) and has no irreconcilable visual or mechanical flaws. I actually want to drive and use my car about 8,000 miles a year so super low mileage and concours cars are not on my radar. In case anyone wondered what an informed buyer is thinking. I got in over my head on an E24 BMW M6 when I was younger and I don't want a restoration job, I'd rather 'curate' through my ownership.

Not that it matters, I'm going to win the DCS raffle car tomorrow anyways. ;)

Okay, guys - I'm the one who bought that burned-up car. Some of you may remember me - Darryl, the guy who operated Specialty Automotive DeLorean Parts in WA from 1986-2004. In 1990 I found that car in PA with 12,000 miles and no engine. I paid $4,000 for it and had it shipped cross country. Being a life-long hotrodder, I saw my chance to show what a DeLorean could have been performance-wise. Rather than drop in a V8, which would have required modification to the frame, I built and installed a Chevy 4.3 V6 complete with a very rare (for a 4.3) B&M supercharger. I made my own trans adapter, motor mounts, headers, mirror stainless engine bay surround, etc. It was a 5 year project that resulted in a 300HP powerhouse. The car, known as BLWNAWY, was the centerpiece for my business and very well known in the NW. However, by 2004 I was growing tired of the competition in the parts business, and wanted to return to my hotrodder roots. The business was sold to Toby Peterson and is now known as DeLorean Parts NW. A year later, with a brand new steel '32 Ford roadster project underway, I reluctantly sold BLWNAWY to a guy in Texas. As the years passed other projects came and went, but the car I really regretted selling was BLWNAWY. I even made attempts to find it, and was told by one expert that it was now in Europe. Imagine my surprise when a few weeks later I was looking at the daily bringatrailer.com listings and there it was, with a link to the ebay ad. It found me - so what was I supposed to do? I set my maximum bid at $7500, then added one dollar to make it not a round number. And now it is safely back in my shop, most of the needed parts have been found thanks to Toby, and the damage is not nearly as bad as it appeared. For a little over $10k in parts and my own labor I will once again have one of the fastest, most unique DeLoreans ever built. It will definitely live again, and as before will easily outrun all the stockers, and with proven GM reliability. Oh, and in the last 11 years, only 1266 miles were added to it. And contrary to the ad, it NEVER had a salvage title, and STILL DOESN'T.

And in reply to the other "now closed"??? fire thread, no this car DID NOT have a high pressure fuel pump, at least not when I built. I believe what was pictured on top of the air cleaner was the remains of the crankcase breather from the RH valve cover (base is still there). In place of the stock fuel accumulator, no longer needed, was a standard low pressure pump. The stock pump was replaced with a s/s cap over the tank opening and a single fuel line. The seller stated he had been doing some carb work, probably due to the few miles being put on it, and apparently failed to properly re-attach the fuel line. Fuel sprayed onto hot headers and a distributor and coil at any pressure is obviously a disaster.

The car had NO frame or other permanent modifications other than to 3 pieces - the louver, engine cover, and rear closing panel. Even the motor mounts simply bolted in to stock frame holes. The wiring normally found at the RH front of the engine compartment was simply moved inside of the pontoon. I was an engineer by profession, and believe me this car was engineered.

After one day back in my shop the car is already apart and being evaluated. I purchased a rear body half in the late 80's with a parts inventory from CA, and it was still in the parts sold to Toby in 2004. I will be re-purchasing that, and grafting the needed parts like you would repair a Corvette . As stated above it will definitely live again. Stay tuned.

Oh, and did somebody really want that steering wheel? I'd gladly trade it for a stock one.

If he was driving on public roads without insurance he was breaking the law. I think I've covered 200 miles (maybe) in my 4 years of ownership so its possible.

Do you guys in the US have an insurance option which covers you for liability but not collision? Sort of like if you drive a piece of junk that isn't worth anything, you wouldn't get any claim amount for the value of the car, but if your actions damaged someone or something else, then that would be covered.

I don't know why someone would insure a car like a DeLorean only for liability, but maybe that's what happened? I know in our winter season here, those with summer toys that are stored for months on end, will often remove the collision portion to save money on the premiums. It then is covered if your garage burns down or something, but not collision (because you aren't driving it). I don't think I can do that anyway since I have classic insurance and it's 12 months all inclusive. Someone with a newer, summer car might do that though (new Vette for example).

EDIT: the piece left on is called "fire and theft" I believe. And I think that can be grouped with the liability piece.

EDIT part Deux: not this kind of fire though, lol. Your house needs to catch fire with your car in the garage, not your fuel lines in the engine bay!

Yes.

You can get Liability Only (a minimum insurance requirement in GA and other states) and then add a "Fire & theft" component to it if desired. Neither part has collision coverage and probably wouldn't cover this incident.

You sold it to a guy named Michael De Beyer, right? The shed where he stored it was on Google Street View for years, and he's on Facebook. But hey, you finally got the car back! She had a VERY unique exhaust note. I saw that car long before I heard it, and you knew it was something special.

Question for you though, and something I've always wondered: How bad is the smoke damage inside? Is there any sort of smell of smoke? And are you able to get rid of it?

Yes the car was insured. The seller collected a relatively huge amount and got to keep the car with a clean title. DeBeyer had it about 2 years, and added the gaudy stuff like aluminum diamond-plate floor mats (?), Maltese crosses, lighting, etc. The current seller was in VA. As for interior smoke damage, that remains to be seen how it cleans up. So far it looks like headliners, seat backs, side panels, and some carpeting will need to be replaced. Biggest concern besides the rear pontoons is that the wiring behind the passenger seat - fuse box, relays, custom wiring for the remote opening doors, etc. - is totally destroyed. This car, by the way, was one of the prototypes for my custom remote door opening kits, which Toby still markets today under his Wings Aloft banner.

I am still in the NW, 20 miles west of Olympia, retired and working on cars. I just completed the restoration of a 1957 Dodge Coronet D500 Hemi convertible - one of maybe ten remaining - working 6 days/week, 10 hours/day for 17 months. I was looking for a new project and this found me. I predict that within a year it will see great progress. As I said, stay tuned...

When I first saw the fire photos, I thought to myself, I wonder how Darryl would feel if he saw this after putting is heart & sole into creating it.

I'm thrilled you got your baby back and will be looking forward to it's resurrection.

You will definitely be going back in time and re-living your past as you rebuild it.
