I'm always looking for small improvements I can add to my automatic D. Came across this on Grady's site. I didn't know this was a problem. Is this a recommended solution to the problem?

I had one of these on my transmission cooler pipe when my car was an automatic. I can't say whether it made a big difference or not but I never had any issues. I wouldn't expect performance like an actual air to water heat exchanger/transmission cooler, but its definitely a start, and reasonably priced. I think it's actually still on one of my coolant pipes on my car now just for the heck of it (not that it's probably making a big difference).

I would buy one now because Grady has mentioned margins for this part are razor thin, and the cost will likely increase in the near future.

I have one and I can't say it makes a difference but it can't hurt. PJ Grady also sells a heat deflector for the cross/over pipe to keep heat of the transmission. Change the transmission oil once in a while too.

The Delorean automatic runs a lot hotter than other automatics because it doesn't use a finned radiator but rather simply a double wall brass cooler pipe with no finning. My research with this product would indicate that on a summer day at about 80 degrees ambient a before and after installation test with a pyrometer would see a 20 degree drop in temperature compared to a stock cooler pipe. That is significant because further research indicates that you double the life of the fluid and potentially the transmission with each 20 degree drop in temperature. There is no pressure drop as you'er not adding more external plumbing hence there are no extra leak/reliability issues. This aircraft aluminum heatsink simply straps onto the cooler pipe and makes it do its job much more efficiently. Although it doesn't change transmission performance it does help in the reliability department and I highly recommend it to all my automatic customers.
