We worked on the car from 5:30-9:30 tonight after work. The first thing I was to mark the timing scale where Mike from Delorean Midwest said the timing should be set for a stage 2 engine which he said is 16 degrees.

We noticed some engine oil on this part of the engine. Not sure what that's all about. I'm wondering if we got fuel in the oil when we were inadvertently feeding fuel through the injectors so it is thinned out now.

I rerouted some lines and cables on the right side.

Next we put the rest of the exhaust system on...well minus the tailpipes that is.

The galvanized bolts for the exhaust flanges didn't have any lock washers. Maybe they are not needed but I'd prefer to have them on there so I search my hardware bins. I found some galvanized lock washers. [emoji108]

I was told by Steve Bano that a good starting point for rich/lean adjustment is to remove one of the injector hoses, jump out the RPM relay so the fuel pump is running continuously, adjust until fuel just starts to slowly eek out of the FD port. So we did that. It was pretty much where we already had it set

I dug out the ole timing light to check the timing.
Man the nut that needs to be loosened on the distributor is nearly impossible to get to. I know I keep repeating myself but that is a horrible layout in the left front corner.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240628/1e7a3731d06b3310876c7d8c52cd9c83.jpg

We decided to fire up the engine again, let it run longer, try to make adjustments, etc.
Things started out good. Engine started right up. The idle started out pretty low so I adjusted the timing from 13 deg to 16 deg. Shortly thereafter the engine started to accelerate. I had the cap off the coolant tank. I had put three gallons of 50/50 in the car the other day and there was about 1/3 showing in the tank. Tam kept an eye on the temp gauge for me. I revved up the engine several times to see how it would handle it. It sounded good.
I started noticing how hot the engine was getting and smoke seemed to be coming off some areas of the engine but the temp gauge in the car was below 200. I looked in the coolant tank and it was almost empty, I felt the coolant hose near the thermostat...it wasn't hot...I thought "Aww crap I don't have any coolant circulating through the engine!!" I yelled "Shut it off shut it off!!" My heart sank and thoughts raced. What if the engine doesn't even have any coolant in it yet!! What if we just ruined our new heads!!! What a damn moron I am!!!
Tam said "Whats wrong" I said I'm a f-ing moron!! We probably just ruined the damn engine!!
I told her the situation and she said "Let's just go get some more coolant" I said "We can but that's not the point!!" "What if we ruined the engine?" "I probably had you watching the temp gage on a engine with no coolant....which means that probably wasn't even the actual temp!"
I was fit to be tied and doubting everything on this project. We went and bought three gallons of premix green coolant.
I decided I'd cut to the chase when I got back and see if the engine was dry or not. I backed out the coolant plugs in the heads...coolant leaked out. Thank God! This is a good sign.

I added coolant to the tank while squeezing the hoses and opened the vent on the thermostat housing to let air out. I had Tam start the car again. We ran it for a while and the hose near the thermostat wasn't hot still. Temp on the dash was still low. This time I had another temp gage on the piping. I waited what seemed like an hour and finally the thermostat opened enough that coolant started moving. I added more coolant to the tank. All said and done I had added less than a gallon of coolant. So I think we were okay before. Engine not ruined...I panicked and overreacted.
While running the engine my timing light wires fell on the exhaust, melted, then shorted to ground...that was exciting. [emoji849]
So now I need a new timing light...or new leads on this one.

One thing I can say is the cams in the heads seem stock to me or really mild. Also I thought the exhaust was going to sound more aggressive.
It sounds good and runs good though so I'm not complaining.

We need to get the car closer to the garage door before we run the engine too much more. We have a CO detector in the boiler room in the shop and it kept going off even with the garage door open and a big fan running.

We worked on the car yesterday (Sunday) from 10A till 10P. It was a long day. My goal was to get the suspension height set, torque all of the suspension bolts, finish hooking up the brakes, and bleed the brakes.
Tam started with checking tire pressures because we noticed the left front tire was looking low.
I grabbed my special wrenches for adjusting the coilovers.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240702/7b0480b94c02ed962fbc9b224368e5ce.jpg
On my way under the car I noticed some wheel weights on the floor near the left rear tire. Hmm...

We have the car up on 9" blocks. Andy L. said he set his car up for 6" from the ground to the bottom of the frame in both the rear and front. So I cut a 2x8 to 15" long as a guide.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240702/ac25ea3ef29b0b924284dd86c69fec9a.jpg
The car needed to come down quite a bit.
I like that the wrench i bought fit the coil asjuster nuts in a wrap around three point of contact fashion but it does make it quite a pain to get on the nut over and over again. It has to be just right to go on. When i got one side so it seemed pretty close i took a measurement to use on the other side.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240702/8a0604631e6ff496a5928918106c8550.jpg
Both side set to the correct height and locked down.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240702/88dc71aefdaff6777e32c7a826bc2959.jpg
Another annoying thing with these wrenches...when the nuts are close together you can't get the larger wrench off or on. So i ended up just using the end tooth of the wrench for the final snug down.
The rear stance now-

Tam was putting the driver's seat together while I was working on the suspension. Sorry no pictures since I was under the car.
I moved to the front of the car next.
The front was too low to start with.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240702/40433e1e031833f1c48d300ed202228d.jpg
After wrestling with the adjustment for way too long I decided to try something. I jacked the car up on the frame. Then I tried twisting the adjustment nut by hand. It wasn't easy but was doable and a lot quicker than using the wrenches. I went a ways, lowered the car, tried my measurement, jacked it back up, went some more......
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240702/7d93892fc2fd4ddbab9d6dd21874ba7c.jpg
I ended up somehow going way too far on the front (7"-8" off ground to frame). Super annoying. I then went a bit too far the other way so I was at 5.5" space. I checked the manual and it has the front as being a bit lower than the rear.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240702/9aaced1bf1f99310e9ba5ffddcfdac87.jpg
I liked how it looked so I locked it down here.

Next I torqued down all of the suspension bolts. Meanwhile Tam cleaned up the headlight wiring harness.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240702/059fdf7acd211ea03cff6b554bb947c6.jpg
Tightening the suspension bolts with the wheels and tires on the car is horrible!!! And not having the car on a drive on lift is even worse. It took me over an hour to tighten these bolts. I suppose that I could have tried to set the outer suspension on jack stands and taken the wheels off.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240702/4b7c4297e5a813b43bbdc3631e67ac2a.jpg
The torque specs for most of the bolts was 60 ft-lbs. This seemed really tight to me and I had a hard time even getting the wrench to click so I only went to 50 for now. I can always tighten more later when I do my checks after break in.
I don't like this. I'll have to either cut the end of these bolts off or pull them out and spin them around the other way.

As I started looking at the braking system I was reminded of loose ends I left undone. Like the lines to the front calipers. I messaged back and forth with Andy and Josh and figured it out.

We started bleeding the braking system.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240702/f21ebf4310949ac90447d97dd33d1dc0.jpg
We ended up finding leak after leak after leak. Super frustrating. Stuipid stuff like fittings that just never got tightened at all. Still loving these special offset wrenches though!! https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240702/7089e7cc8dfb06be9d0a90e7832b5a34.jpg
We managed to find and fix all of the leaks caused by untightened connections. The left rear caliper was leaking bad every time there was pressure on the system.
I removed the parking brake assembly for better access.

It looked like the feed line adapter was leaking at the caliper. I replaced the copper crush washer and cranked it down really tight. Tried pumping it up and then the crossover adapter was weeping. Pulled that apart which is a challenge. Put on a new washer and cranked it down. Pumped the brake. Still weeping. Dang it....
I knew what we had to do....remove the whole caliper to see why the fittings were not sealing. After 12 frustrating hours working in heat and humidity this isn't what we wanted to do but we went for it.
Found the issue and I kind of thought this might be the issue. The surface of the caliper body is too rough for the sealing washers to properly seal.

So this all made sense when I thought about it. The original lines sealed internally not on the surface like these do. I may actually switch to the original type lines at the calipers at some point.
We bled all of the calipers again sprayed down all the areas that leaked so hopefully the brake fluid doesn't cause rusting.
The end of a long day.

Just re-read the first posts. It's quite interesting and funny. No one, including Tammie and I, really knew how bad the car was at this point.
Early on I received some solid advice from Andy L.
Incidentally, this would be my first conversation with him. I have probably had 100 conversations with him since then.

No more guesses on how many hours we have invested so far?
Well it is roughly 650 hours. But that is times two of us so really 1,300 hours. This does not include research hours- reading write ups, watching YouTube video, calling or messaging other owners, vendors etc., posting on FB hours, posting on here hours, making parts lists, ordering parts, buying parts and tools locally, etc. If I had to guess I'd say another 100 to 200 hours there. So we are looking at roughly 1,500 man hours so far.
We are probably going to be around 2,000 by the time we get the car on the road, redo the interior, stereo system, roof box, re-grain exterior, etc.
Fiscally we are into it for around $55,000.00 last time I checked. That includes the $12,500.00 that we paid for the car.
That is a LOT of money for a middle class couple like us. Probably not the wisest use of our time and money honestly. But better than doing drugs or something I suppose. Actually I'd say it is a better investment than buying an expensive new rare vehicle like a Ferrari or a Lamborghini.
I often think of this scene when I ponder how much time and money we have spent.

Only you can judge if the time was enjoyable or not. (You won?t get paid for it.) But 55 grand is cheap for your car. If you were going to sell it, I would expect you to list it above 100 grand. So doubling your money sounds like a pretty good investment to me.
Edit, When I finished my 10 year project truck and began enjoying it, all was great. Now it’s been a couple years and I miss the project part. I might start another even though I might not live long enough to finish. lol.

I grabbed my tire that keeps going flat and the rear tire that I found wheel weighs on the floor near and brought them to the tire place near my shop. They were really good last time...well other than giving me a wheel/tire that was leaking and a wheel with wheel weights that weren't stuck on well. This time it was a totally different staff. Kind if a rough crew. The original weights were painted steel which matched the wheels perfectly. This time the weights were zinc plated...bummer.
The tire that was leaking they took a sander to on the inside and put a bunch of black goop on the bead of the rim. Not sure if that's standard or not. Seemed kind if hack.
They showed me how they moved the weights closer to the outside of the rim "so it will stick better"
Uh....yeah and now you can see the weights from outside. Ugh...
I'm probably being nit-picky but I was disappointed and wished I had gone to a high-end shop.

"Sharpening The Saw",...it's something I read in a book once and something my dad tried to teach me. The idea is if you just keep cutting trees but don't ever stop to sharpen your saw, then you are going to end up having a hard time and taking longer to do the job. My parents burned around 8 cord of firewood a year. I, of course, had to help get firewood for the year. I would get so frustrated when my dad and I would just get a good rhythm going, the chainsaw was seemingly cutting well, and he would shut off the chain saw. Next, he'd stand there on the tailgate of the truck slooooowly sharpen the chain saw chain....one tooth at a time...stopping every third swipe of the file to tap the file and blow off the the chain. It used to drive me nuts! He'd say "take a break, drink your water" Now, 35 years later, I get it.
So instead of working on the car the other night, I "Sharpened the saw"
I rounded up tools, I removed a toolbox out of a old work van, cleaned it, and set it up, I totally reorganized my big toolbox, etc.
It was actually quite fun.

I found two old school analog dwell meters and one digital meter that does dwell. I'm pretty sure that the last time I tried to use the digital meter it wouldn't work right...maybe the battery terminals were corroded??
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240711/2d53ad8ab7e2beab0e54c3f9db2d9925.jpg
I'm not sure if this model of dwell meter will work on a Delorean or not.

As you may have guessed we have been taking a break from working on the car. Summers are just too short here in Maine.
Public Service Announcement-
If anyone is going to be in Maine and would like to stop in to say hi in person please contact me in advance!
Yesterday someone stopped in to our shop with no advance notice.
My wife was at the shop while I happened to be 4 hours away. I have no idea who this person is or how he knows me. He led my wife to believe we were great friends.
I never told anyone our address so this person must have somehow figured it out.
This is not cool!
If you want to visit please contact me in advance.
At this point I still don't know who this person was other than what he told Tam "Tom that lives in Ohio and used to live in Maine". Kind of freaky.
I'm hoping this is someone that has talked to me on here or on FB and not someone casing out my shop or some pervert weirdo. Tam ended up giving him the tour of the shop and showed him the car.
I have considered taking down this entire restoration thread now.
Ugh....

Trying to get motivated to jump back into this project. Worked on our list of materials for an hour or more. I ordered some larger items that don't qualify for free shipping so the shipping was rough. I did find however that the more large items I added the better the deal. So I just went for it. This should be almost everything we need to finish the car.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240731/7aaeb97a52bdbab3149ade562aa22b0b.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240731/abc66aa728f1b1fb8984d8bfe4a4ecd7.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240731/c24b23cb0284efcfc965434911ce7255.jpg

For what it's worth, when you order stuff from DMC Houston I've always found it cheaper to call with part numbers or even better send over an email to the parts department. The automated website ordering system they use will calculate shipping to be very very expensive. If you do it over the phone or via email they can calculate shipping and it is often much cheaper.

Ironically the Delorean club of Ireland had an event weekend the last weekend we were there. I was in contact with the event leader and we were planning on attending the second day of the event since our airbnb was only around an hour north of the event. The night before we made the tough decision to pass on attending so that we could sleep in and then when when we got up, go check out a cave and do some hiking trails north of us. Here is the flyer for the event we missed. [emoji17]

My sympathy and I am sorry for the loss of your grandmother. I love the picture of her and I am sure she shared a lot of great memorable stories with you. She had to be quite an adventurous lady.
I had a great aunt that in the 20's rode and had quite a story. I have several motorcycles too and have ridden since the 70's.
Thanks again for sharing your adventures.
Looks like a great trip. Thanks for the photos.
You were close with that Spirit Aerosystems find, but you were off by a a building or two.
While Spirit in the same industrial park as the original DMC factory was the DMC assembly building and main offices have been occupied by Linnamar Light Metals, formerly Montupet, Ltd. for at least 20 years. From what I see in the satellite view Spirit's building sits where DMC Ltd's giant southeast parking lot used to be.
Still, it's funny coincidence Spirit is in some way connected to DMC's history.
And yes, no entry to that industrial park without prior permission.
Linnamar/Montupet is the outfit the local club works with to clean up and open the DMC test track area every 5 years for one of the events at the DeLorean Eurofest in and around Belfast. The next such event is scheduled for June of 2026.

Thanks for the clarification.
When we got down in there it was way more confusing than I had imagined it being.
Things have changed a lot over the years and I was kind of just winging it. I was basically using my memory of what I had read in books about the factory (books written back in the 80s) and my view of Google maps.
This is where I was parked trying to figure it out as my wife was saying "I don't think we can be here". So as it turns out I was in the right place.

You're never going to believe this folks but we ACTUALLY WORKED ON THE CAR TODAY!!
We worked on it from 5:30P-7:30P.
Tam worked on the rear facia trying to remove the remaining snapped off studs.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240830/c9446bdab424e32b7b6d17984c087cc7.jpg
We had some parts that I wanted to have powdercoated semi-gloss black but Tammie pointed out that we had some of the good semi-gloss spray paint that we wouldn't need since we are planning on having the engine cover and louver professionally painted. Her argument was, why spend money powdercoating what we can paint in house for free. Good point I suppose although I feel powdercoated parts would have a much more durable finish.
So I decided to do like she said and just prep and paint the parts.
The front rock screen we had bought from D-Ind came unpainted. I worried about paint adhesion so I went over the whole thing with the dry blaster. It was a tight fit in the booth but did fit at an angle.

I top coated with the two stage stuff.

I could not seem to get a smooth finish especially on the rock screen but fortunately it didn't really matter with the rock screen. In fact it looks like it has a textured finish which actually looks pretty cool.
I put the parts up high to dry over night.

I painted some stainless mirrors on another project and I figured the paint wouldn?t stick. I didn?t do nearly as much prep as you and it seems to be holding up fine. In the case of the grill, I?m not sure I would want to paint it. I guess your car is very stock and might not be appropriate to leave silver, but I think it might look good.
Anyways, great work.
Carry on

We are still taking a break on working on the car. Partially because we were kind of burned out and partially because summer in Maine is so short. We have been going right steady all summer. We recently made the decision to get a dog after having put our last one down over a year ago. We were looking for a King Charles Cavilier Spaniel. We had had one before and it was the perfect dog for us. The breeder we went to had two pups left, brothers. I convinced my wife to get both so that they could stay together and so they would keep each other entertained, hopefully. So far they have been really good and very entertaining to watch.
They wrestle and chase each other around making all kinds of funny noises then they get tired and go to sleep.
Now that fall is here we are hoping to start working on the car again and try to get it road ready for spring of 2025. Of course now we have to figure out how to work on the car with two puppies around. It should be interesting. Here's some pictures totally unrelated to the Delorean-

Last week I took a few hours to get myself re-aquanted with the car, what we have left to do, and what we need for parts.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20241210/9f9740ec0a0ed10ebe2dd21c8dcc0bc2.jpg
I condensed some boxes of parts down and set a couple new boxes.
I am glad I didn't just order what I thought that I needed for parts because as I got looking I found some parts that I didn't even know that I had already.
We were coming in to Black Friday weekend so I wanted to see if anything that I needed was on sale. I ended up buying a couple things I probably wouldn't have bought or at least not at this time but I bought it
1. Because it was a good price.
2. I needed to hit $100 or more for free shipping.
One example of number 1 was that I bought a complete windshield wiper kit. I actually already had new wiper blades and we had repainted the wiper arms but I still needed the spray nozzle and a couple other pieces. Well,..the kit was so cheap that I bought for the same price as a set of wiper blades.

Hey everyone. I wanted to update you all. Not on the car,..which nothing new has been done on for a long time but on me.
For several months I have been getting multiple tests to try to determine whether I have early onset Parkinsons.
Yup, cruel irony. There's been some weird stuff going on for at least four years now and it keeps getting progressively worse. Last spring I was watching a interview with Michael J Fox and he was telling the interviewer what the early signs were. I was like "Oh crap".
That led me to make an appointment with my primary care doctor. The first tests I had led my neurologist to think that it was P.D. but....the latest test, a DAT scan supposedly showed no sign of P.D. So now I'm having blood work done. So the jury is still out on what exactly is going on. For now we are saying (hoping) that it is not P.D.
Two good things have come out of this. I have really focused on the important things in life. The other thing is that I found out that I should have been on medication for depression and anxiety a long time ago (on it now). That has helped a lot with my tremors and my state of mind.
What does this all have to do with a Delorean?
Absolutely nothing!
We do hope to get back to the car soon but between this, my shift in priorities of life, and having two dogs we are trying to train, it may be a day a month.
No we are not selling the car! [emoji846]
I leave you with this family photo.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20250127/4d52cd32447b51aca258acbfbaf0a9c3.jpg

FINALLY worked on the car again.
We got around 3 hours of work done yesterday.
We would have got more done but shortly after we got to the shop we received a call from our daughter and son in-law saying they were stranded because their car was stuck in the snowbank. We headed there with a ball hitch in the tow hitch and a pull strap. Unfortunately thier car, a Mazda CX3, had no good place to hook on with a strap and their car apparently didn't come with a screw-in recovery anchor point. So we spent several hours driving around to every auto parts store and dealership in the area trying to find something. Super frustrating. In the end we just brought them home and they called a tow truck. They said that he asked if they had a screw in tow point. He ended up hooking to the suspension on the rear of the car to pull it out of the ditch.[emoji51]
Okay back to the Delorean....

This is the list of what is left to do on the car to get it on the road-
I made this list on 7/08/24 but not a whole lot has changed since then.
This is just to be able to drive the car (No AC!)-
1. Get parts powder coated (order powder coating powder, drop off parts, etc.) *Optional- try
to paint ourselves <This is done. Did in house.
2. Make list of parts needed to finish car enough to get it on the road and order parts. 2-3 hours
3. Re-install left side parking brake 1 hour
4. Install engine cover hinges 1 hour *Pain to get to!!
5. Install throttle cable (replace?)
6. Install Washer bottle, washer cover, wiring, etc. in front corner of car. 2-4 hours?
7. Install the rest of the parking brake system, set up, adjust, and test 4 hours?
8. Install steering shaft 1-2 hours
9. Rough toe-in adjustment on car (at ISM shop) 4 hours?
10. Install seats 1 hour
11. Change door lift pistons 1 hour
12. Install T-Panel on roof 1-2 hours
13. Install battery (strap in, put cover on, etc.)
14. Install Fronk hinges, latch, release cable, hood, etc. 4 hours?
15. Grind and punch out rivnuts for passenger side rocker 2 hours
16. Clean up and Install rockers (sides and rear) 2 hours
17. Run engine and check car again for leaks- fuel, coolant, oil 1 hour
18. Run engine and get it running right. Test controls, set idle, timing, etc? 4-8 hours?
19. Install front facia 2 hours?
20. Install headlight holders, headlights, signal lights 2 hours?
21. Make repairs to rear facia (glue in studs, fix where license plate bezel and taillights attach,
etc.) 4+ hours?
22. Install rear louver (not reconditioned) *Leave engine cover off??
23. Test drive car and fix more things 4 hours?
24. Take car for alignment or try to do myself. 4 hours
25. After break-in change oil, adjust valves, check spark plugs, check injectors spray amount.
We started with the front and rear facia because they are going to need to be sent out to the body shop along with the engine cover and rear louver to be painted. Tam drilled out the rivets for the grill holders and the front signal light screw holders.

This was our first test with working on the car with the pups there also.
At first they kept getting into everything they could find and eating everything they found which is scary in a shop like this. After many redirects they did better. They didn't like being in doggy jail.

I worked on the rear facia prepping for glueing on new mounting studs. Since I was going to be using body panel caulk I figured I'd install the plates for the trailing arm shields.

I removed the old mounting studs from the body.
Interestingly, these mounting studs were exactly the same dimensions as the new ones we bought. I prepared all surfaces with sandpaper and wiping down with alcohol. I laid the plates in place and drilled holes through the body for the rivets. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20250216/3130e11cc75ef83772cf9cae32bed56b.jpg

I don't have a picture of it but what I did was squirt the adhesive onto the back side of the plates then pushed them tightly onto the facia.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20250216/467b68b211e31c565e8841768e6777cd.jpg
I measured as I went along to make sure the placement was correct.

I put another layer of adhesive over the stud plates similar to the depth of the original designs.

I don't have a picture of it but i measured center to center the holes in the lower facia mounting plate then used that to check the location of the studs.
That's what we got done yesterday. A snowstorm came in overnight so we most likely won't go out to work on it today.

Once again we put the car project on pause. We took ten days off to get away from work and my health stuff to go on a Caribbean cruise. It was our first cruise. Definitely some pros and some cons. One thing I can say is they really treat you like a king. Especially if you have the premier package. We are lucky to be able to take a trip somewhere every year by using our credit card points from our business to pay for most of the cost. A nice reward for all the stress and long hours of work.

My original plan was to build aluminum plate framework behind the facia where the taillight nuts and license plate nuts go but I have since decided to not do all that. The taillight nut locations aren't warped too much. Two of the license plate bezel nut locations are warped pretty bad from being over tightened.

Next I moved to the front facia. Our facia has sight eyebrow effect.
It had been so long since I worked on the car that I forgot exactly what the process was for fixing this issue so I wasted a bunch of time on my phone looking for write ups, pictures, and videos. The more I looked the more conflicted I was on what to do because I kept finding different ways to do it.
I finally just got after it.
I didn't use blocks, clamps, and heat to straighten the facia before installing the plates like many people do. I felt like this was a waste of time. What I did instead is heat the eyebrows, grab them by hand, push them past the point I wanted them at then let them go to a relaxed position.

I cut two pieces of 3/4" x 1/8" aluminum flat bar around 16" long. I noticed they they didn't really tuck in as well as I wanted them to so shaved a bit off and beveled the edge that pushes into the facia.
Ideally the aluminum pieces really should have a slight curve to them but this should work well enough.
I roughed up the pieces with a low grit flapper disk on a grinder.

This morning I checked on the side that was cured and did the other side. I cleaned up these studs but I am thinking that maybe they don't actually receive any nuts. I'm saying this judging by how the threads on the studs look and the location that may be impossible to access on the car.

Anyone know the paint code for the silver and the bumper incase I end up having to paint the bumpers?

This help?
https://support.delorean.com/kb/a80/paint-codes-for-fascias-updated.aspx
Here is the latest DMC Classic take on fascia paint (https://support.delorean.com/kb/a80/paint-codes-for-fascias-updated.aspx?KBSearchID=7884), including the silver paint code.
Note that most of the article is about painting their fiberglass replica fascias. That may mean they didn't list the flex agent that has long been part of the paint code since the OE urethane parts did flex, unlike the replicas.
They correctly state there's usually no need to paint the black sections of the fascias. The dulled black sections can be brought back to life by polishing as they specify. They do mention a black paint option for tougher situations although it's less durable than the unpainted urethane is. I had both of mine polished and buffed out about 15 years ago (originals with no black paint). They still look like new. I've seen many, many poor results with aging black fascia paint on these cars. Cracking, peeling, flaking ugliness.
They also mention the point below about the finish. Your VIN makes yours a later car (matte finish) although you can choose any finish you like. I assume this refers to the clearcoat.
"It is important to note that there were two distinct paint finishes used during production. "Early" cars (typically with gas flap hoods, and prior to about VIN 2500) have a high gloss finish, where the later cars have a matte finish."
Anyone know the paint code for the silver and the bumper incase I end up having to paint the bumpers?

We worked on the car yesterday (Saturday) for 6 hours.
I removed the clamps from the front facia and removed the wooden block from the rear facia.
I pulled out the engine cover and rear louver to see if there was any prep work to do.

Tammie installed the new SS brackets on the front of the tub. The rivets area SS and larger than the original ones. She drilled the holes larger and riveted the brackets on as tight as she could get them. Well, I did the first one then she took over.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20250330/12beaa345287a886876ba3ea7936f642.jpg
The plates felt tight on there and the tub was starting to make crackling noise. So I messaged Josh at D.I. to see if the center posts were supposed to snap off or needed to be cut off. He said keep pulling and they'll snap off. We couldn't do it by hand with our standard riveter so I had to bring out the big guns.
Sure enough they popped right off.

The next thing I did was working on the rear brakes. I decided to change the D.I. rear caliper lines to OEM type lines.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20250330/eb0ea6e702618f7e9f5acd4bb8110bd2.jpg
This was no fault of the D.I. parts. I didn't realize that the D.I. set up was going to seal onto the calipers by means of using a crush washer on the outside of the caliper. We were not able to get them to fully seal due to our calipers being so porous. Our calipers were REALLY rusty.
Hindsight's 20/20. We should have just bought new loaded calipers. Or if I knew how the fittings sealed I would have ground the mating surface flat before I had them plated.
The original fittings seal with a flare way down inside the threaded holes in the caliper. I'm hoping to have better luck with this.
Copper never seize went on the new parts.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20250330/28f02d2ff84eb74655223384fb59a0b9.jpg
I changed the flexible line on the trailing arm to a hard line also. I am not thrilled about it not being SS but it's not like this car is ever going to be driven in bad weather.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20250330/bf0a695c2fb4b134bc8b5b16a30ec722.jpg
Tammie was done what she was working on so I had her change the right side lines. She kept saying that the line that goes on the trailing arm didn't fit. Sure enough. I tried it every which way, tried re-bending it. It's just wrong. It's not even long enough to reach. Tammie was pretty upset and went on a rant about vendors sending us the wrong parts, missing parts, etc.

Next I worked on the washer fluid cover. The screw holes ended up getting pretty messed up in the process of grinding the heads off the seized bolts. The cover is very expensive if you can even find a good one. So I decided to make a reinforcement plate out of aluminum.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20250330/6720fc15c6b61d18e621a41f776b94d4.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20250330/90cf8f3995c400a6361969a887b0646b.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20250330/6d3bacc838054ae63fa30866e3a7cff7.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20250330/5877561645ee2c3e61f74b1b2249514e.jpg
The thin aluminum I used was a pain to try to cut with my jig saw. If I did it again I'd use thicker material...which I actually had on hand. I used a file to finish the corners and round the edges.
Next I marked the center for the holes that need to be drilled.

I had bought a new washer fluid pump. The original one was in pretty rough shape.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20250330/8c4c03c765510ab5fbe963fe41362227.jpg
I was kind of disappointed to see that the "new" pump didn't look new at all. I am assuming this must be a NOS part that DMCH has had sitting around for the past 40 years. As long as it works that's what matters I guess. So I installed the "new" pump.

I was under the car getting ready to install the washer bottle and found a couple things that really frustrated me. First was I reached up in the washer bottle cavity and felt all kinds of mouse debris. Secondly I found chewed wires on a harness that I had already removed from the car and fixed rodent damage. I suddenly got a sinking feeling. Did mice get in the car over the winter and cause a bunch of damage again? This time I started to rant and rave. Tammie came over and helped me clean out the mouse mess. She said "There's a mouse skeleton in there, I don't think that happened any time over the past year." She looked all through the inside of the car and found no other signs of mouse damage. Also the chewed wires looked like they were chewed a long time ago.
So I think I panicked for nothing. I guess I just never cleaned out that area yet and I missed the chewed wires.

I worked on the car for a few hours today. Tam and I went to the shop together but she didn't really work on the car. She was too frustrated. We rent part of our commercial building to an electrical contractor. Over the years they have taken over more and more of the building without asking. When we showed up today and she saw all kinds of stuff near the car she got very upset.

A couple of weeks ago, Tam got rear-ended while she was stopped waiting to pull into our driveway. The insurance company ended up totaling the car, so I grabbed the nice new jack and luck wrench out of it before it got towed away. I do have the original jack for the Delorean but it's not as nice as this one. The lug wrench is too small so I won't be using that.

Today, I dropped off the front facia, rear facia, engine cover, and rear louver cover for bodywork and painting.
I told my bodywork guy that the bumper part is supposed to be buffed out and just be the black that the facia is made out of. He thought that was wierd. He looked everything over and said he thought that trying to buff the bumper part was not the best way to go. He wanted to paint the bumpers instead. I pointed out the reasons for not painting the bumpers one more time, but he was not convinced. So the bumpers will be painted. He said it would look better and assured me it would hold up well. I'm going to trust him.
The other disagreement we had was the paint mix for the facias. I gave him paint codes I found on the internet. He suggested shooting a good area on the facia with his paint scan gun to get the proper paint code. He said he'd spray some samples for the silver and the black and have me look at them before painting my parts...[emoji1666]deal!
Right before I left, I looked him right in the eye and said, "It's important that this is done right...what I am saying is I am not looking for a deal." I may regret this later when I get the bill [emoji38]
My point though being that in the past he has given me a deal. I didn't want him to cut any corners to give me a deal this time.

Looks like you're locked in on your fascia refinishing plan.
In case you aren't locked in you can tell your bodywork guy that the black bumpers and lower areas of the fascias really were not painted. The fascias were made of black UV-stabilized urethane, nothing weird about it. See p.21 of the DeLorean Buyer's Guide by Espey.
Also tell him the factory-look restoration of the black urethane is *not* to buff it out unless you mean *polishing it*. Use a random orbital polisher and liquid polish to take out the fine scratches and get it back to a deep black look. Deeper scrapes may call for deeper polishing. Deeper polishing won't change the color since the fascia is black through and through. You might ask him to polish just a short portion of the black area for you both to look at before finalizing the plan. It wouldn't take more than 10 minutes including setup - there's no downside to that test.
The polishing results in a satin look, not too shiny.
Yes, black paint can work. Good luck whichever method you end up with.

Update on my health stuff for any that may be interested-
I'm still taking anti-depression/anti-anxiety medication, and I am taking one Primidone pill a day for my tremors and stiffness. My brain seems to have adjusted to the Primidone. It was highly effective in the beginning, but now, two weeks later, the tremors are back, as well as muscle stiffness. It's not nearly as bad as before, though.
I'm holding out hope that I don't have P.D. I just had blood drawn today so that I can have a panel of tick borne diseases tested for.
It's surprising how much work I can still do on the car, even with my left hand, not really working correctly.
What I am finding happens is I can do an action slowly one or two times with my left hand or arm, but if I try to quickly or repeatedly do something, I seize up.

Yesterday (Saturday) was a cold rainy day so after a 2 mile walk in the rain we went and worked on the car for 7 hours. I wish I could say we got a lot done but it was one of those times where everything seemed to take forever.
We started with trying to put the washer tank back in the car.
We put dielectric grease on all of the plug connectors and plugged the harnesses together.
It was kind of a pain trying to get the wires and washer tube to stay in the right place as we put the tank back in.

I had forgotten that I had one rivnut that I wasn't able to replace. Oh well, pressing on.
Tam put the cover in place with the custom aluminum backer plate I had made. I accidentally double ordered black plastic screws for the access covers in the fronk so I decided to use some for the washer cover. I figured it would be a good choice. They'll never rust, they'll never seize into the rivnuts, and if for some reason I need to drill one out they'll drill out easy.
Tam was installing the screws. I warned her to not over-tighten. The next thing you know I hear "snap" and yelling from under the car. Tam had snapped one of the screws off.
I spent the next hour and a half trying to extract the broken off screw. I tried every trick I could think of. I finally just ended up taking the cover back off, I ground off the rivnut, then installed a new rivnut.

Update on health stuff. I had labs drawn for more in depth testing for Lyme (tick) disease. I know several people that have had weird symptoms similar to mine and they later found out it was a tick borne illness. Some of the results are not back yet but I did get one positive for something that indicates that I had Lyme in the past and my body fought it off. There is a chance it is still causing issue so my doctor has me taking Doxycycline (sp?).
I feel like the P.T. twice a week, exercising, the Primidone, and people praying for me all seem to be helping. It almost felt like the "good Ole days" when I worked on the car yesterday.
This is a picture from our morning run today. Full disclosure- everyone else ran 7 miles, I walked/jogged 3 miles. I have to "Make" my left arm and left leg/foot work but I'm happy to be out there moving still. No more 7 minute miles for me anymore [emoji22] [emoji17].

We worked on the car today (Saturday) for 8 hours.
The mission, remove and disassemble the HVAC box.
I started by unplugging the fan resistor and removing the heater blower. I had to use a small pry bar to remove the plug connector from the resistor, not a good sign.

Three nuts inside the housing needed to be removed.
I removed the recirc/fresh air damper to access the nuts.
It was pretty rusty.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20250503/d7cecc0094272a2ef702a461075a518e.jpg
Only one of the nuts came off. The other two nuts were stuck so the inserts just spun in the blower housing.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20250503/ed52b9bf7f6cc8c09a9b0975980fbb14.jpg
I tried several ways to try to cut the nuts off without much luck. I ended up getting it apart by carefully prying down on the housing while turning the nuts eventually the inserts chewed their way out of the housing.
Some other parts needed to moved out of the way of the HVAC box then it was ready to come out. The pipes going through the tub fought me but eventually, they pulled through.

Now that you have the HVAC box out, I would love to know if it is possible to cut a rectangular hole In the face of the box facing the passenger seat vertically above the drain tube somewhere so that the interior could be accessed and vacuumed out right where the drain tube connects inside. If you could cut a rectangular hole, you could save that bit and put it back in place with foil tape.
Take a look and I would love to know what you think or if there is anything in the way inside that would prevent this from working. I would like to clean out the inside where the drain is but I don't want to remove the HVAC box.

On those you could take a hole saw, 3" if I remember correctly, drill a hole in the right place, vacuum the box out, then install a 3" plug. The whole ordeal took less than an hour to do.

Yeah a couple years ago I replaced the cowl and added a stainless intake screen. Seems like cheap insurance if nothing else. The cowl is kind of a pain to remove, needing to remove a few screws that also have to be sealed with RTV so they don't leak into the interior. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20250504/30eb0a3b7d8b712c9ae7d03a7e4bf8af.jpg

My bodywork buddy texted me to tell me that the engine cover and louver was done. He wanted them picked up today so they wouldn't get damaged. At first they looked perfect but when I was carrying the engine cover out to my truck I noticed that the underside didn't get sprayed from the angle that would be seen when the engine cover was raised. I showed him and gave it back to him. He apologized and said he'd fix it. I brought the louver out to my truck. It looks great. I don't think he painted the underside but that side was in good shape so I don't really mind.

I am so glad I had a pro do this part and glad I let him talk me into restoring and painting the bumper parts rather than trying to buff them out.
The blemishes were not really that bad. At first I told him not to worry about it they were fine as is but he said it wouldn't be a big deal to fix them so I said okay.
Here's a picture of the blemish on the rear facia.
The front was down low and normally wouldn't be seen but it was worse.

The other part I wasn't super happy with is the underside of the louver as previously mentioned.
He was proud of how everything came out and I just wanted to move on to the next stage of this project so I took my parts, paid him, and didn't say anything. I have to say other than the issues I mentioned the parts came out pretty awesome. And I feel good knowing he used the right stuff like adding a flex agent to the paint.

Amazon parts showed up and we order parts from DMCH. Took the plunge and ordered a new left front fender. I wish I would have ordered one when they were cheaper.
Also ordered a radio mount/console for a knob type radio because Tam wants to use the original Craig radio. The radio turns on but I've never heard any sound come out of the speakers and I've never tried putting a cassette tape in it. So I'm not sure if it is usable or not. I may just send it out to be tested, cleaned, and serviced. Correction, we don't have the Craig head unit. We have the ASI unit.
I have reached out to some people restore these units. I am learning that the ASI units are a real pain to restore. Mostly because it is so difficult to get to the belt(s).
The one guy that seems to be the best option in the Delorean community said he has ASI units fully restored with the recommended upgrades for like $1200.00
He said he could give me $200 as a core for our unit.
Or I send him our unit, have him do a $90 diagnostic and go from there.
One thing that I didn't notice before is that the plastic on the front is warped upwards for some reason.
I outlined the warping in white. Also I was told that this is the wrong faceplate.

The ASI is a hard sell for me. Its an expensive option and not that great of a unit as far as I'm concerned.
I can buy nice NOS period correct tape deck head units for $250 to $500 all day on Ebay.

Don?t know of any better options for restoring your sad-looking ASI unit.
Looks like a PO put a Craig faceplate on your. In case you do need the correct ASI faceplate it?s PN 110699 it?s at Classic DMC for $11.
And they have replacement nosepiece that might fix the warpage for ~$60. PN110691.
Looking forward to seeing the repro left fender on your car.

It looks like that's a Craig face plate on an ASI radio.
If you want to try and fix the ASI you can still get the correct face plates for cheap:
https://store.delorean.com/110699-asi-radio-faceplate.html
It would be hard to justify the cost of repairing and upgrading it though at $1200. Not sure what's going on with that waviness around the cassette door either. Those are available NOS as well.

One of my pet peeves about eBay is that its fee structure doesn't really offer any incentive to put a reasonable "buy it now" price. In fact it mostly incentivises putting an outrageous "buy it now" price. If this was going to sell for $900, it would have already. In reality, it's going to sell for "make an offer" and in my opinion the "buy it now" price is totally irrelevant and you shouldn't even think about it when considering what you might pay for this.
(this isn't directed at you Mark, I am sure you've come across this issue with BTTF parts, just me jumping off your link and yelling at clouds)

I hear you on the eBay rant. BIN prices are kind of a joke now and at the same time eBay also killed all incentives to run a listing as an auction. They want to be like Amazon and push sellers into higher volume / low margin sales. Not exactly friendly to small time sellers of unique items anymore.
A lot of sellers I've dealt with do exactly as you've described. Put a silly price on BIN and wait out the listing for months for that one person who needs it immediately to click the button. When buying stuff I always make an offer if it's enabled, or a lot of times sellers have auto-offers set up where it sends out an email with 5-10% off the BIN price as soon as you add the item to your watched list.
From a seller's perspective I understand it though. I used to sell lots of used BMW parts on ebay, but the platform just keeps getting worse with fees and ways for scammers to game the system. There is a lot of abuse from buyers using Item Not as Described / buyer protections and eBay's automated resolution center is set up to side with buyers by default. As a seller, it's hard to get an actual person on the phone anymore to settle disputes and obvious scams. eBay tells sellers that it's just the cost of doing business to get burned by a scammer once in a while. I've largely quit selling stuff there because it's just not worth the effort and frustration.

Well my wife mounted a good defense. She thinks it's really important to have "The original" stereo in the car. I showed her the 1 DIN head units and she immediately said "Those weren't out in the early 80s!"
I have to admit she's right.
If we are going "period correct" then it needs to be a 2 knob-style head unit.
At the same time that all of this was happening I was messaging Eric Woltkamp asking him about his restored ASI units.
Long story long, we decided to just bite the bullet and buy a restored & modded out ASI unit from Eric.
It's expensive but that's the only way that we both get what we want. Tam gets an "Original" head unit that plays cassette tapes and I get Bluetooth and RCA preamp outputs.
This is the picture Eric sent of the one he has that we would be getting. He also sent video of one that he had done the Bluetooth set up on. Pretty neat.

I've largely quit selling stuff there because it's just not worth the effort and frustration.Yeah I also used to sell a lot of used stuff on ebay before they changed everything. Now it's is all about the Buy it now.

Congrats on the radio Bill, it's expensive but it sounds like it's what you wanted!Funny you should say that. I have an old Bulova wrist watch that my dad's late uncle had. We worked on the car today from 12:00 to 7:00P. As usual things took four times longer than they should. Such is the way of restoring a Delorean that sat in a barn for 20 years.
I started by fixing some of the original insulation and adding some new insulation on the outside of the box.

Next we cleaned out the fresh air intake duct by blowing compressed air in through the drain hole.
Note- with all the work we have done on the car I never knew this drain hole existed until recently.

I laid down a bead of RTV silicone.

Sorry no after picture with the screen installed. I'll try to get one next time.
Others in the community told that the seal onto the fresh air intake fails as the cars get older and there is leakage onto the passenger floor.
I'm not sure I really believe this. If feels and looks like good RTV silicone still in really good shape. Just for the heck of it "While you're in there" I put a layer of RTV over the original RTV.

This is the part that took four times as long as we thought it would. We could get the slots to line up with the tabs all the way around the box. We banged, pushed, pulled. We took it apart, we put it back together again. We finally got it but it was a huge pain.

We go all done then found this. This is a bracket that helps to hold the heater core in place. The heater core is solidly locked in place so I'm not sure why it is even there. I made the decision to not tear the HVAC box apart again to install this bracket.

Okay back to the HVAC system.
I installed the new screen/expansion device. I'm not sure how far it is supposed to go down in. There are pinched spots on the tube that stop it from going too far but I never hit them with how far I pushed it in. Note- there is a flow direction mark on these. They need be installed in the correct orientation.

Continuation of what we got done last night-
Installed a new sealing gasket on the HVAC box.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20250515/fb42e752592955301fc0867f19ad3628.jpg
Tam made a new gasket and installed the new blower motor resistor.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20250515/2059fd079b3b16a1c6a568cccafa661f.jpg
The plug connector was in really bad shape (I had to use a tiny pry-bar to unplug it) so we are replacing it.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20250515/4bba786436d0709f3f7bfdc8d33880b4.jpg
I don't like having a bunch of butt connectors all bundled in the same spot so I staggered them and installed my own heat shrink butt connectors. Unfortunately none of the new wire colors matched the old wire colors. This seems like no big deal, just match up what color came from where but....when you're having issues with you brain like short term memory issues etc. It makes it quite challenging. I ended up checking the same wire three or four times by the time I finally made the final crimp connection. Ugh......[emoji3061]
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20250515/13981e0164ea9a6138b39c3e59667b44.jpg
The plug in for the blower motor +12V didn't look to healthy either. It looks like this is a special "Grabby" connector. That's what I call them anyways. So I was hesitant to chop it off and install a standard F.M. spade connector. But I went for it. If I have trouble with it coming unplugged I will just use a zip tie screwed to the blower to hold it plugged in.

The last thing we did before we called it a night was to install a new throttle cable. If there ever was a time to do it this was time to do it it's now. I had purchased a throttle cable kit from D-go but then saw people on-line that had had issues with the cable not working smoothly after installing it. So I got spooked and ordered a cable kit from DMCH. Honestly I think the issues probably weren't with the cable but rather with how the people routed their cables.
We will keep the D-go one for a spare.
We ran the outer cable sheath first then we wiped down the cable and sprayed it with so dry graphite lube as we slid it through.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20250515/af1a5580da8217cb6403c7478d8301aa.jpg
We tied it in on both ends. Tam said "How is that supposed to work" I said "Push the gas pedal and see". She was pretty happy to see/feel the gas pedal actually working the throttle on the car.
Sorry I forgot to take pictures of the final installation.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20250515/801171f185c6a81ec60b3412ef9d3104.jpg

I impulse bought this headlight relay kit on my last order from D-go.
For some reason I thought that the description said that the original design didn't use a relay for the headlights, that all the current went through the headlight switch.
I thought "Geez yeah that's not good" so I bought it.
Now I wonder if I really need this. I would rather keep things simple if this isn't really needed. If there's already a relay for the lights then why do I need another relay. Isn't that redundant?

Yes our cars use two relays to power the headlights.
That relay kit is good when you still use incandescent bulbs in the running lights (also powers the dash lights). With LEDs it's not really needed.
Even if a switch is rated for the current, an incandescent bulb draws much more current when first switched on (cold). That can create a spark at the switch contacts and eventually result in higher contact resistance.

I plan on installing led lights in the HVAC panel.
Anyone know what bulb number I need to look for? Something on Amazon?

I thought that 3D printed parts were only available in hard plastic. Health update for those interested-
A while back I pushed for a full panel of testing for tick-borne disease. Everything came back negative except for one thing (sorry I forget the details) that basically showed that at some point in the past, my body fought Lyme disease. My doctor gave me the option of taking antibiotics (Doxycycline) "Just in case" I decided to go for it.
Since taking the Doxycycline (three-week treatment) I have seen a lot of improvement. I have also been doing a lot of focused physical therapy and work outs and have a lot of people praying and encouraging me. So who knows which things or things is working but something has changed. I can walk better, use my left arm and hand better, I have depth perception again, less brain fog, etc.
I am still taking Primidone twice a day and when I get close to my next dose my symptoms get pretty bad. Tremors, shoulder stiffness and pain, etc. So I need to ask the neurologist about that. Basically if I have these symptoms still and when I take the Primidone they go away what does that mean?
I have an appointment with the neurologist this week.

Tam had a 25k trail race in the rain and mud today. She got 2nd place in her age group.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20250525/ea04faa05abde2e60171aed03f02846a.jpg
After lunch we worked on the car from 3:30-7:30.
We could avoid it no longer...it was time to attempt to install the HVAC system. I knew this wouldn't be fun and it wasn't. We wrestled with trying to get the heating core tubes and evaporator tubes through the rubber boot. This was a nightmare. It seems like there must have been a better way to design this part of the car.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20250525/c46e8807fce23a142e1f6c38e3423d48.jpg
Eventually we got the HVAC box in place. I installed the washers, lock washers, and nuts inside the blower compartment.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20250525/f492a8a662cbb3dcca966b14d8bdaad6.jpg
Tam realize that with all my pushing from inside the pipes had pushed the rubber boot off from the metal plate on the tub. We spent the next hour taking turns yelling and complaining trying to get that boot back on. Eventually, we got it back in place.
Tam put a new gasket on one of the duct pieces.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20250525/55a78eaf7d7a5faa2f752015c5d6be7b.jpg
I noticed the condensate drain tube was crushed so I took a pick and managed to get it back onto the nipple on the HVAC box.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20250525/02e34cd748498673418f44557f983a6c.jpg
A lot of owners remove this plastic elbow and install a vinyl tube directly onto the nipple. The claimed reason for doing this is because people have had debris get caught in the elbow. I decided to keep the elbow. Mostly because I know everything in the HVAC system is squeaky clean and we have a screen to stop debris from getting in. Also I worry that a straight tube bent to connect may kink over time.
The last thing I did was install the blower motor. When I went to install the power connector (new F.M. spade connector) the connection bent. I bent it back and it snapped off. Ugh.....[emoji19]
So now i guess we need a new blower motor. [emoji849]

Yeah it sure does. Before I had my shop it was in my garden shed for years and it almost got thrown out. I am glad I made an effort to keep it.

Today we got Ole Reliable out of storage. It might not be a super cool Delorean but we hardly ever have to work on it and with all the mods we've done we have maybe $10k into it including buying the car. Cheap fun. We rode out to the shop with the top down and the dogs with their faces in the wind.
We worked on the car for 3 hours.

The first thing I did is traced out the wiring that we missed passing through the rubber boot for the AC coil. My hunch and hope is that it was wiring for the AC high pressure switch. I was right. The system I bought from D-Ind doesn't incorporate a high pressure switch into the system so I removed the wiring from the car, cut the wires near the connector, and used it to make a jumper under the dash.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20250526/b2f467c26b1aebbde36534aa0c866b37.jpg
Edit- we actually did this part BEFORE we bolted the bracket in place.
With the cables locked into the handle I adjusted the cables to equal spacing of the threaded section on both sides of the car.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20250526/4167b57e4c078c8f733e17372a4114dd.jpg
Next we adjusted the parking brakes so they were just starting to grab the caliper then backed it off one turn. We did the same on both sides.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20250526/b3c789825972ad9fafaea724ffee8738.jpg
This equated to around five clicks of the lever to fully lock up the rear calipers.

As we are getting closer to having the HVAC system back together I am checking what I have for parts, figuring out what we need for parts, etc.
For some reason we have a total of three orifices. We have two accumulators. I have one from D-Go and one from DMCH. The one from DMC looks to be OEM, NOS perhaps. The D-Go one is new.
One thing I noticed about the D-Go one is that it has two 1/4" flare ports. This could be kind of cool. If there is room to install the LP switch facing towards the fronk that would be a better location (out of the dirt spray from the tire). The stock location port would be a good option for gauging up to the system.

Next conundrum...how much oil do we add to the system and what type?
When I removed the compressor plate to swap on the one required some oil was lost. I couldn't tell you how much exactly. It wasn't much but I don't think they come with much in them. The tag on the compressor says "SP-20"
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20250530/ac19f2dc1139c13000e0b029da9d162d.jpg
I searched the internet for SP-20. I found very little other than on the Sanden website it says to use SP-15 in compressors that came with SP-20.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20250530/5d06c5a95fd61612c5d471bf0cbf4b1e.jpg
Great,...so does that mean I need to somehow empty the oil out of the compressor and put in SP-20 instead? Oye veh!
I messaged Josh from D-Ind to see if he knew how much oil should be in the system. He said 3 oz.

I had a sneaking suspicion that this SP-15 oil that you can only get from Sanden is not anything special. So I did some more digging. It looks like it is just PAG 100 oil relabeled.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20250530/b6946a9e81b710545c592ea5e9b49ebf.jpg
Nevertheless, I am going to call Sanden to see what they say for oil amount and type.
Thanks Andy (82 DMC) for the back and forth conversation about this.

Ive heard that if your system is totally dry, then 10 oz of PAG100 fluid. if your compressor is new, its probably filled at the factory, so read the label to find out how much and subtract.
In mine I put 4 oz in my accumulator when installing and the rest in the compressor.

Unfortunately the compressor doesn't say how much is in it and when I Google the compressor number I get conflicting number of how much it comes with. Unfortunately, I may have to remove it, drain the oil, and start from scratch.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20250531/6cc1cedd6490123a02fa8b895f950053.jpg
We drained the oil out of the compressor so we could see how much oil was actually in it.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20250531/3a6d34e75d8438a14dc0051c65873f84.jpg
With what I spilled we estimated 4.5-5 oz. was originally in the compressor.

We re-installed the compressor. After we mounted the compressor we turned it over a few times by hand.
I decided to go with the DMCH accumulator rather than the D-go one. The LP switch we have has a schrader core depressor. I don't just assume that this arrangement will work. Ask me why.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20250531/1ae9030a105855edb89b5de4f8b99149.jpg
I would never try to swap out the LPS with pressure on the system so I decided to just remove the schrader core.
Unfortunately, this didn't go well. It loosened up but it wouldn't come out no matter what.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20250531/14bee006b6a0bb82714e4957cef741c6.jpg
So I screwed it back in.
I installed the oring with a light coat of PAG oil then installed the switch.

Tam worked on removing the right front marker light while I tried to install the accumulator.
This is such a miserable job.
I installed the accumulator on the evaporator then I went to hook up the other side of the accumulator and after fighting with it for an hour I realized that I should have put the outlet pipe on the accumulator first. So I took the other fitting back apart, put the pipe on the outlet, then put the accumulator back on the evaporator.
Next I tried to put the inlet pipe onto the evaporator. I couldn't get it...not enough room.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20250531/121c70344c048f8078c6a6891dfdf204.jpg
So...I took everything apart AGAIN!
Did I mention how much this sucks?
After another hour or two of cussin and fussin I finally got all of the connections done.

While looking I noticed the connections at the compressor are different than mine. These make way more sense than how mine are made. On mine the access ports are facing straight down. I'll have to ask Josh when they changed the design.

The hoses that D-Ind uses for the AC system are Eaton EZ-Clip system.
other names used are Aeroquip or Danfoss.
other brands exist too that make these type of connectors (clones) like Truck Ac and Fourseasons (usually a bit cheaper in cost).
Everything is available from regular suppliers as parts, like the ends, raw hose and special crimper. the only part not available is one of the elbows at the accumulator, that seems to be custom made by D-Ind. as the fitting sizes and the radius needed to clear the frame is custom.
here is the crimper for example.

Health stuff update. Last week I had follow up appointment with the Neurologist. She reconfirmed that her assessment is P.D. We, well mostly Tam disagreed and argued against the diagnosis. We told her we were meeting with another Neurologist this week. We all agreed to wait and see what this other Neurologist said.
We meet with this other Neurologist yesterday. We really like this guy. He asked a bunch of questions, said "do this, do this, while doing that"
At the end of the appointment his clinical diagnosis was "You have P.D."
He wants to look at my scans and some other things but he's thinking I have P.D.
Tam took it pretty hard. I already kind of came to terms with it a while ago so I am fine and the gears are turning in my head of "How would God want me to use this to do good in the world?"
So what are the odds? A guy buys a barn find Delorean and while he is retoring it develops systems of P.D. and and him and his wife are almost finished restoring the car, get a diagnosis of P.D. Seriously, what are the odds of that??
Actually to be clear I DID have symptoms before we got the car but I had no idea it was P.D. because it was minor things

We all hope the Doctor is wrong with the PD diagnosis. I still hope since you had good results with the tremor meds that it turns out a better result. Don't they try a medication that helps PD to verify.

We worked on the car from 11:30 till 7:30.
This was another "I know this is gonna suck but we just got to do it".
I am referring to installing the steering shaft and steering column.
Tam was not in the shop the first hour so I started by installing one of the rear wheels just to get it out of my way and so I could remember what the car looked like with wheels on it.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20250608/17e8945999cc0f5ec9416a21d346d972.jpg
Next I removed the old junk rivnuts on the right side rocker.
I find a low grit disk on a cordless angle grinder to be the best tool for this job. Grind down until flush with the tub then drive them up into the tub with a hammer and punch.

There was a bunch of shims under the fender. I am not sure if we will need these with the new fender or not but we took several pictures of the shims locations and count.

There was a bunch of debris behind the left fender so I decided to pull the bottom of the right fender out to clean behind it. We used compressed air to clear the gap between the angle plate and the tub.

The factory did a crappy install of the inner fender seal on the right side. I cut this bent part off and refitted the seal.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20250608/8b3d365f4ec76dc9b316374af8a0e4a7.jpg
I replaced the rusted tinaman nuts with stainless steel ones. I walked to the hardware store and found perfect S.S. screws to use to replace the bottom screws on all four fender panels.

She was having zero luck getting the new seal to go onto the tub. I tried and didn't have much better luck. We ended up using the grinder to take the sharp edge off the tub flange and used a plastic mallet to seat the seal fully onto the tub.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20250608/c6f07334135bcecbde84e182e5be3757.jpg
Knocking stuff of "The list" we looked the clutch M.C. I had a slow leak. I had ordered a new hose adaptor and adaptor sealing washer so I figured we would start with that.

The gasket that was on there was not the correct type so that was most likely the cause of the leak.
We filled the reservoir mid way with dot 4 fluid. We cleaned up any spilled brake fluid with windex.

Last but not least we worked on installation of the steering shaft and steering column.
I installed the steering shaft onto the rack. Next I tried putting the column shaft through the tub and bolting the column into place.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20250608/6cbfb3e90692ac57506cfef97b3d1980.jpg
The splined shaft was barely sticking out through the tub and the steering wheel/had a bunch of slop. I pulled the column out of the car and discovered that the inner shaft of the column had pushed into the column....fun.[emoji849]
I used some hose pulling pliers to pull the shaft back out. While I had the inner shaft pulled out I cleaned it up and applied new grease. Sorry no photo taken.
I carefully reinstalled the column. Luckily a fair share of the inner shaft made it through the tub this time.
I tried to push the steering shaft on and when I did it just pushed the inner shaft up inside the column. [emoji2959]
So we pulled the column out again and yanked the inner shaft out again. This time I had Tam inside the car with needle nose vise grips trying to hold the inner shaft from going into the column. I pushed, yelled, swore, tapped on the steering shaft to get it onto the column shaft. I tried to put the bolt in but it wouldn't go through. I used the bench grinder to taper the end of the bolt.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20250608/fe672a78e20e5c58bba09660828cb575.jpg
We had to push on the bolt while trying to turn it with a ratchet wrench. This was horrible and not really working. Eventually I rotated the steering wheel and use a hammer and punch from underneath to drive the bolt through.
Tam tried to get the lock nut on but the threads on the bolt were too messed up. Of course.....
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20250608/64b70e7e0eac97ee55fb88ddb60054f9.jpg
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20250608/7d1ce8f8e0dcf02e868e1f5c5d049f73.jpg
So, drive the bolt back out, install a new, longer bolt (only size I had) and DID NOT TAP IT IN this time. A painful 30 minutes later, eventually Tam wrenched the bolt all the way through.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20250608/667326f4f885a8043c41ce332b196a8b.jpg
We put on a washer and a lock nut and celebrated our victory.

Not much to update. It's summer in Maine so we are out doing something most every weekend and week night.
We did buy a resto-moded ASI stereo for the car. It wasn't cheap (what is on this car?) But it is pretty sweet. Eric Woltkamp totally disasembles a good donor unit. He checks everything, lubes moving parts, cleans everything, replaces the belt, etc. We had him also add Bluetooth connection and Pre-Amp outputs (RCA outputs).
He sent me a video on how to use the Bluetooth and even made his own manual for the unit and sent it to me.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20250722/57422e788beca7f97440a173f9585432.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20250722/7326593550448f3f1135e61a7d46e117.jpg

After many many months...we are ready to finally start working on the car again. As previously mentioned our focus has been on other more important things.
We started by just simply looking at the car and the parts laying around. This sparked our memory of where we left off. I found our old "What's left to do" list. I crossed out the things that have been completed.
Before leaving the shop I went in my office and typed up a new updated list of what's left to do.
Stand by for actual work on the car coming soon.

I suppose the right way to do it was make the list before taking a break from the project. But who has time for that? And of course, nobody is going to take a long enough break to forget where we were. Good to see you haven?t givin up. It is getting close.

I guess that's the curse of every unfinished project, basket case motorcycle deal, etc. The original guy had no intentions of stopping the daily or weekly progress on said project but alas something caused him (or her) to not make it back until enough time had past that he couldn't remember where he left off or even worse in some situations, parts and pieces were displaced or damaged by the perils of time.

After a 5 month hiatus we finally worked on the car tonight after work from 4-8.
I started by trying to replace the leaky 90 degree fitting on the AC accumulator. I was planning on having to take everything a bunch of stuff apart in order to get the fitting off but luckily I was able to wrestle it out of there.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20251105/58748fc2362903d425317bb253bc7dc6.jpg
I didn't understand how the clips worked so I ended up cutting them with a Demel.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20251105/90e598a0418cd15387ceb9a34eef36ef.jpg
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20251105/d8cf32729aaf272e6ee2ebcb95a7c109.jpg
That was the easy part. The hard part was getting the fitting to come out if the flex line. It was stuck in there good! After much pulling, twisting, bending I was able to finally get it removed.
The old one with the pinhole leak next to the new one.

I installed the fitting onto the accumulator. This was a lot more difficult than removing it was.
Then I installed the band with a new black metric bolt and lock washer.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20251105/3631efc9980bd3e44676ddf28fe4d0ae.jpg
While I was doing all of this Tam hooked the heater hoses up to the new heater core and finished tightening the steering shaft bolts.
We checked the clutch master. No more leaking niiiiiice.

I had replaced a crusty spade connector but the new connector didn't agree with the male spade on the motor.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20251105/762f76a9186039994fcd0fdcb7b0c98e.jpg
I found a special plug on connector that I must have ordered. I decided to crimp that onto a short piece of wire then put a male spade on the end of that wire.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20251105/c1c324e294c4dc762031cb3794419967.jpg
We crossed some things off our list and checked on the vacuum. After three evac/nitrogen cycles it wasn't dropping down like it should. So we may have a small leak. I left it on a nitrogen pressure test and called it a night.

That?s cool having a micron gauge right on your charging set. I?ve found that micron gauges are so accurate that often you will find the hoses and connections are to blame for your leak.

The best way to do it is to pull the schrader cores, use oversized hoses and put the micron gage on the system but that is overkill for something like this.
