Nearly yes, however the smart ones at least know of it.

Haha! Excellent.

I think he meant 1.5 to 2mm.
Yes. That is more like it:thumbup:

So I used a 1.5mm as cover panels and 2mm inner support, welded it into a square looking base to make it stiff.

Worked on the original MOMO steering wheel adapter today. You may recall I purchased off Ed in Illinois, the ebay chrome GM steering adapter.
Well The casted metal this was made out of, was to weak to accept any welding. So I created an adapter for the adapter, and for the turn signal pins, I had to drill wholes in the back in order to have custom made pins screwed in.

Images:
Front:
The diameter of the adapter was to wide so I crated a stainless plate with additional screw holes to have the wheel fastened on. Plus took off 1.5mm to have the centre of the momo wheel fit into it
http://i821.photobucket.com/albums/zz135/alex-akos/delo%20resto/null_zps7171f4b8.jpg

Rear:
You see the custom turn signal pins. This will be further adjusted as soon as I try to fit it on to the column. Also took off 3mm on the rear of the adapter to fit into the steering canopy

Took images while driving it to the powder coating for a rough mate black.

Short by time did not manage much today.
First, did a quick gauges refurbishing. Well, I was hearing a clinging noise inside when I sway it around and seemed like something was loose. Fortunately it was just one of the anchors that hold on to the temp gauge. No biggie.

http://i821.photobucket.com/albums/zz135/alex-akos/null_zpse342c6e9.jpg

So I also exchanged all bulbs with LEDs...

On to the garage, I took a look at the rust friendly roof under the T panel. To my surprise, that is one of the VERY few things, that was almost rust free.

http://i821.photobucket.com/albums/zz135/alex-akos/delo%20resto/DSC00159_zps3a90517c.jpg

http://i821.photobucket.com/albums/zz135/alex-akos/delo%20resto/DSC00160_zps0a69424f.jpg

With the doors down, I too the opportunity to clean it up from the minimal rust points and prepared for painting it tomorrow.

Lubed the door hinges.
While I was at it, I also lubed the steeling column joints.
Sprayed the lube
http://i821.photobucket.com/albums/zz135/alex-akos/delo%20resto/DSC00161_zps1b5eddab.jpg
Moved the joint frequently to have the rusty joint's juices come out, cleaned it with a cloth, and the resprayed it. That I did over and over again until no more brown stuff came out.
http://i821.photobucket.com/albums/zz135/alex-akos/delo%20resto/DSC00163_zps3af03b13.jpg

Did the same with the gear selector.
http://i821.photobucket.com/albums/zz135/alex-akos/delo%20resto/DSC00162_zps1be59132.jpg

Did then some bench working by cleaning out the water pump adding new seals and gaskets
http://i821.photobucket.com/albums/zz135/alex-akos/delo%20resto/DSC00164_zpsee58b587.jpg
http://i821.photobucket.com/albums/zz135/alex-akos/delo%20resto/DSC00165_zps63b72363.jpg

http://i821.photobucket.com/albums/zz135/alex-akos/delo%20resto/DSC00047_zpsbcfb1c0d.jpg

Finally, got down to removing the brake caliper cylinders. Nothing pretty in there either....
http://i821.photobucket.com/albums/zz135/alex-akos/delo%20resto/DSC00166_zps31de0f6d.jpg
http://i821.photobucket.com/albums/zz135/alex-akos/delo%20resto/DSC00167_zps2ae8cb32.jpg

And the process of HOW TO remove that cylinder;)
http://i821.photobucket.com/albums/zz135/alex-akos/delo%20resto/DSC00168_zps4061c7b8.jpg
Easy peasy! Just take two screwdrivers and leverage them out slowly. (An article I read mention it was a big issue. Not really)

ALEXAKOS

Picked up all my powdercoated items today. No point of posting images cause they are all still wrapped up.
I did remove the customly made MOMO adapter.
Looks VERY close to the DMCH release.

Cleansing interior time!!!

Took all carpets out on a sunny day, sprayed them with carpet cleaners (serious oxi-action stuff!!).
That sheet foams real good:P
Then used the water jet blaster to wash the dew out of em.

http://i821.photobucket.com/albums/zz135/alex-akos/delo%20resto/null_zps5df91d7b.jpg
You notice I had the house carpets next:)

http://i821.photobucket.com/albums/zz135/alex-akos/delo%20resto/null_zpsaea6631a.jpg
In those images the discussing filth they had is hardly noticeable cause they are already wet and foaming.

But the end effect is a miracle!

And and submerged into my darker quarters.
The Garage and the workshop at the bench.

Painted the D's top with a special antitrust frame paint first layer. (Sorry No pics...forgot but will catch up the day after tomorrow)

Then placed the front upper arm bushings I got from Josh @ DPI..
Everybody was curious how I would go about this job?
Well... I supposed this is a first for everybody in here eh?
http://i821.photobucket.com/albums/zz135/alex-akos/delo%20resto/null_zpsb8304846.jpg

Looking good?
http://i821.photobucket.com/albums/zz135/alex-akos/delo%20resto/null_zpsdc2c818c.jpg

Now you'll get to see the arms after the sand blasting and power coating job. Not Stock colors but I love it.
http://i821.photobucket.com/albums/zz135/alex-akos/delo%20resto/null_zpsb8fde2b7.jpg

http://i821.photobucket.com/albums/zz135/alex-akos/delo%20resto/null_zps76cbe085.jpg

How?

Ok. I just used my bench's clamp.
With a bit of lube and slowly working it into position. In the one side I covered the clamp's surface with a cardboard to avoid the "injury" of the bushing and on the other side I used a cylinder with a cloth to allow the metal side of the bushing to protrude.
http://i821.photobucket.com/albums/zz135/alex-akos/delo%20resto/null_zps8bd990c0.jpg

But... WHERE IS THAT CYLINDER FROM?
http://i821.photobucket.com/albums/zz135/alex-akos/delo%20resto/null_zpsdba5279c.jpg
It is none other than the front wheel's bearing Shel.

On to cleaning out the steering rack.
http://i821.photobucket.com/albums/zz135/alex-akos/delo%20resto/null_zps472ef739.jpg

That too has been powder painted

But hey, for $40 total shipped from Germany, its a shame to let it go to waste. Most of those cost over $150

Need s bit pampering... ;)

Yeah I know, but since I will never be using this apart for the effect. (I don't even own any VHS tapes)
this one is not functioning and he sold it for parts.
Paid his shipping and saved it from becoming spares. Now it will live on a glorious life as a movie prop:Headspin:

Can't really call it a day cause I only worked for a couple of hours on my steering rack replacing the two friction parts
Right, here are the originals next to the copies I made with poly.

http://i821.photobucket.com/albums/zz135/alex-akos/delo%20resto/null_zps9074bbaf.jpg
Right the melted filler cap knob left my replacement
Goes like this:
http://i821.photobucket.com/albums/zz135/alex-akos/delo%20resto/null_zps05de6976.jpg
http://i821.photobucket.com/albums/zz135/alex-akos/delo%20resto/null_zpsb8e11c18.jpg

Then the centering cylinder that was ripped.
Left the original, right my poly repro
http://i821.photobucket.com/albums/zz135/alex-akos/delo%20resto/null_zps56af3bfc.jpg
notice how large the gaps are on the original. I believe the main reason is minimal friction cause it was made of hard rubber

fitting

http://i821.photobucket.com/albums/zz135/alex-akos/delo%20resto/DSC00188_zps176be39d.jpg

I strongly suggest you do not take that belt sander to your body panels! It will burn through the metal quick as anything other than a perfectly flat surface will put pressure points on the surface. The speed of the sander can quickly cause overheating and warping of the metal. Also, if you are not using aluminum oxide paper, the grit will embed itself into the SS and start oxidizing.

ALEXAKOS

Terrific reply josh!!!!!
Yes I forgot to mention the use of that sandpaper. I did mention proper handling as any overheating can cause metal warping;)

hos to Alex's blog, and since I am still waiting for pars, I decided to remove he AC/heater unit.
And a good idea that was!!!!
I seems some "handyman" had already tried o fix it sometime in the past. Several components are broken and all of the air blocking sponge material was broken up due to age.
Consider this ALSO a nice weekend job to do.

More in photos:

Rust dissolving liquid? More details please :)

I suspect he's using phosphoric acid, probably in the form of a gel like Naval Jelly.

Just cam back from an A/C service shop where I left my two heater and A/C evaporators for leakage checking and cleaning.
Apparently there was some serious contamination on both with mildew and bacteria housing between the gaps.

A good idea to clean up your evaporators, to avoid breathing that stuff in.:8ball:

Did a couple of things today. Painted with rust protection the front body bumper supports.
http://i821.photobucket.com/albums/zz135/alex-akos/delo%20resto/null_zps7c349fd6.jpg

http://i821.photobucket.com/albums/zz135/alex-akos/delo%20resto/null_zps85cd888e.jpg

Did a quick repair on he A/C fan blower unit.
http://i821.photobucket.com/albums/zz135/alex-akos/delo%20resto/null_zps68aee3f1.jpg

and finally covered the interior with heat and noise reducing elements. Due to my country's high temperatures, I would like to make sure that the engine heat as well as the street's heat does not burden the A/C's effectiveness which in turn will also overheat the engine.

VIN 5992 was the LAST vehicle in the production line to have its door strap wrapped around the door handle.
After 5993 the strap was fastened on the door panel.

On to the works:
Brought back my evaporator core an the heater core from the shop after checking them for leakage and cleaning it with antibacterial foam.
In the mean time, I have all the interiors refurbished and applied new foam insulation.

Heater core installed

You obviously don't need their services. But there are guys out there who are under a lot of pressure with their issue and those words sound like hope. Any physical and mental "illness" can drive you beyond reason.....
And then there are those Aholes who take advantage of such affected individuals.:angry0:

The seals come with the master cylinder. You will want to save the reservoir though. Mine was just as bad as yours, such a pain to drill out those pins. I used stainless bolts to hold it to the new master to hopefully eliminate the problem in the future.

Thanx for the tip Josh. Didn't know the seals are included. On the DMCH site they apear as separate with $0 value. Yeah, bolts seem to be my way out too. Mainly to have an easy in out procedure and to tighten those container brackets.

Service manual reads:
1. Remove battery + cable
2. Remove distributor harness
3. remove distributor cap rotor and cover
4. Remove bolt and remove washer
5. Pull Distributor Assy out.

But I am too stupid to follow simple instructions.... I need the drama and the power tools!!!!:angry0::angry0::angry0:

Son of a distributor was "welded" in there.
First the head broke off...

I once removed a broken off head bolt of a six cylinder ford without taking the head off. I welded the end of a drill bit to a rod. Then I found a pipe that the bit will fit in to so it acts as a guide to center the bit over the broken bolt/stud. Carefully sliding the pipe into the old bolt hole allowed the bit to stay perfectly centered.
Drilling to the bottom of the stud allowed penetrating oil to soak in. Breaking off the drill bit and welding on a easy-out, I was able to ease the broken portion out. If I had a extra long drill bit back then I would have used that. Maybe it was just beginners luck, but it worked great.

Thanx for your guide.
I did take the cylinder off so depth was not an issue.

Funny is that I had lubed the bolt before screwing it in.
I first cut a line in underneath to use a screwdriver. Then tried with two small drilling holes from above. Nothing even when the bolt was drilled through with only a finger nail thickness left of it, NOTHING!

I tell ya, the freak I got when I heard that snap made me throw the torgue wrench 20 feet against a wall and created a crater!!!

finally I received a cool letter from the US. Apparently my D was sold through a Pontiac Dealer in N.J. named Maroon Pontiac.
Those stickers are reflecting the light, kinda cool for that era! So I contacted that dealer, now a Maroon KIA since pontiac is no more, told him my story and he replied.... With a new set of sticker of same quality but without the native head.... :(

Binnacle was improved with a thin sponge under the leather, to cover the cracks and give it a soft feel!

Installed all refurbished speakers today. What a ridiculously hard job it is to get the front speakers screwed in again!!!!!!!!
The Speaker magnet keeps pulling that tine 7mm bold off your finger and the space is way to small to put in two fingers and keep a hold of the bolt! Then you try it with a tool and it is being pulled away all the time by the magnet!!!!!!!!!! After that I need to go to church and confess... "Bless be father as I have cursed everything on this planet!"

Then I removed the lambda counter and reset it.

That two holed cylinder is where you get it done.
All you need is a tool to grab it with and start turning it until in goes back to zero. Works just like the speedo's resetting knob works.

Alex, was your glove box insert difficult to fit? Mine needed a lot of grinding and sanding to get it to fit correctly. The fibreglass walls were a lot thicker than the original moulded plastic one.

My original had a bag of molten chocolate caramels ruin the flocking, left there by a previous owner. Horrible!

ALEXAKOS

Mine was a used original. I just refurbished it with a mat black spray to get the suede finish and straightens it with a head gun cause it was warped from the heat somehow

Thank you my lord!:)
I was only upset to see the door headliners turn out so crapy! The liners underneath were breaking up like wet cardboard. Someone tried to glue the old lines and used some glue that deteriorated the mold. Did my best there:wrenchin:

also worked on the frame with patching up my opened sections.. no photos pf that cause I dropped my phone...

Been very disappointing with my engine issue. :smokelot:
I have taken it to 4 shops that specialize in engine rebuilt and bolt manufacturing to get it sorted. They all diverted my to the next shop as it is an impossible task for them. That bolt is tightened at high pressures and have to withstand vibrations and temperatures. Must be treated accordingly.
Now my final hope is a shop that specializes in creating new threads and bolts. Even he is very pessimistic about the outcome. After that... its get a new engine. Having spent over 1200 EUROS already on that block to make it new.

To divert my focus on something positive, I was fooling around with my custom made floor mats.
Painted it for starters, but that didn't look too fancy.
left painted / right stainless steel

So I am going with a brushed stainless lettering to glue on with a 2 component glue.
Just have to choose it its the full name or the abbreviation

Okay.. about that busted cylinder head bolt. I had a fellow car mechanic come in today to take a look.
He mentioned 2 things!
1. NEVER RE TIGHTEN cylinder head bolts. When they are off, replace with new ones. It is metal fatigue that gets to them after having lived a couple of heavy tightening's.
2. Apparently my new torque tool broke on tightening that last bolt. He brought his along and measured them both. Mine needs to be replaced and I am bringing it back to the shop tomorrow. To think I bought the better quality tool.....

Oh, and always store your torque tool (if it works with a spring) loosened. Do not leave it a high N-M or Lbs for a longer period of time cause the spring looses it's accuracy.

Steel corrodes. Stainless... well try to bend those in shape by hand!
Are you referring to the clutch line?
All old fashioned steel lines are being exchanged for this material.

Brand new tires?

ALEXAKOS
03-10-2014, 03:41 PM
Well.... They are brand new of 1989.... But you can still see the painted stripe between the grooves. Those must have not driven more than 100 kilometers!

From what I figure someone around 1989 must have tried to get it back on the road and left it standing after a few kilometers drive. So it has actually not been moved since. And the tires may be old, but still in very good condition.

For now they are fine. Once I get the D driving serioysly, I'll get newer ones.

Am I correct in understanding you used stainless steel bolts to mount the trailing arm bushings to the frame? I would not recommend using stainless steel here as it is way to soft for this high strength application...The factory bolts are 10.9 grade bolts so I would not install anything less. Stainless looks nice and won't have corrosion issues but for any suspension bolts you've got to at least stick with what the factory used if not go to a higher rating.

Also, I'm kind of surprised that you would install 25 year old tires on freshly refinished wheels. I think most tire manufacturings recommend replacing tires after 10 years regardless of wear due to dry rot/cracking/aging issues. I"m not sure how safe it is to run tires that old, especially at highway speeds. If you're just running them temporarily I'd still be very cautious

One last thing I noticed was that you had your rear shock installed with the adjustment knob facing out. It looks like you just had it on there temporarily, but be sure to have the adjustment knobs facing inwards when you do your final assembly... otherwise you'll have to take the wheels off to adjust the damping settings.

Otherwise great job on the restoration so far. Your frame looks like it turned out really nice. I bet you're glad to have all that rust repair behind you!

ALEXAKOS
03-10-2014, 04:11 PM
Thank you mark on your recommendations. I will look into the bolts. The tires are not permanent. I just need to roll the frame from here to there. Once the d is drive able they will go I assure you;) I not all that " Greek" hehehe. I change tires after 3-4 years max. 10 is way too long for a tire!

Mark D
03-10-2014, 04:53 PM
if you have any trouble finding 10.9 rated bolts for the trailing arm bushings here is where I bought mine:

https://www.boltdepot.com/Product-Details.aspx?product=6731

High strength metric hardware is probably a lot easier to find in greece than it is in the USA so I wouldn't think you should have trouble finding the right bolts. Make sure to use hardened washers and high strength nyloc nuts too.

For as much fuss as some people make about the trailing arm bolts I'm surprised I don't hear more about these bushing mounting bolts as they are equally as important.

Hey Alan,
Thank you for your honest opinion! I also accept any personal choices made. My blue water lines were intended to match the blue cooling silicone hoses. Little did I know that I would not actually find them in blue.
Any way I grew fond of that blue in the water piping and even created a cheesy poem...

"Fuel lines are RED
Water pipes are BLUE
my car stainless
and I love you"

Ring a bell? hahaha

I appreciate good comments BUT I NEED CRITICISM! This is the main reason I am posing in here. Trust me I could spare my precious time in my restoration. The other day member MARK D. gave me his opinion on some bolts which got me to save an error. Or a few months back with the bushing removal.

Keep an eye on this one cause I am making good time lately. And I am sure you may grow fond of the blue lines when you see them on the frame;) I did :rock_on:

Are those special copper coated brake lines? I always thought copper was to soft for high pressures. Can someone settle

ALEXAKOS
03-16-2014, 06:37 PM
The coopers are incredibly soft and well off! I have inspected them carefully before putting them back on. The tire shop where I installed them has never seen tires that age at a condition that most 4 year old tires usually are.

As for the break lines, those were replicated by a brake repair shop. I didn't just buy a copper pipe and made them:) actually, that shop came highly recommended for his work.

Plus he is the only person who works with British threading. All Classic Jaguars are serviced there.

That should actually be Copper-Nickel Alloy which is DOT, and MOT approved, its much stronger than just copper and it is very corrosion resistant. Ive seen it used alot in restorations in the UK. Personally I'd still rather just a nice steel line myself.

Attached all fuel lines on the body and pump, added my new accumulator (what a bloody crappy hard job that is) and attached my new custom made stainless steel / Teflon fuel lines.

One thing I noticed in an earlier photo you posted....

On your rear shocks you may want to consider adding an additional large washer underneath the shock absorber securing nut. In the event that the shock bushing fails this extra washer will prevent the nut from pulling through the end of the shock. The last thing you want is the shock to come completely off the end of the bolt and cause the suspension to collapse.

I used a large washer stacked on a small washer to allow the bushing to flex without the large washer contacting the shock.

ALEXAKOS

You're absolutely right (again) there Mark!
The image you have taken of my assembly was before I added the wheels. So I had not tightened the bolts yet.
I did put on a larger washer, but hat smaller washer before is a neat idea. Will add another smaller one to it.
In addition, your shocks are DMC mine are spax. The spax shocks have a metal tube inside that exceeds the shock housing.
Exactly for the purpose of bushing flexing. ;)

QUESTION!
SO WHAT IS THE MANUAL TRANS UN! code of the Delorean transmissions??

And while I am waiting for my transmission to be reassembled.... My super-duper Renault expert, got involved in a Bike accident and is now hospitalized with a serious lung injury being punctured by the thorax bones. :( Poor guy.

My passengers door got in from Florida, thanx to James. Looks great!!!! Even comes from a 7K vin again.
Some cave art

And funny enough, the old PAX door replacement had ALSO little fish drawn on to it. (like my rear bumper did. My vin is 5992 and the door is 7k something) I am figuring there was a Pisces in that assembly line.
http://i821.photobucket.com/albums/zz135/alex-akos/delo%20resto/6D2C53DF-C41F-4232-8E0A-759C8F90916E_zpshxzizlhq.jpg

Pisces are known to use the fish outline on their cars, on jewelry etc.

Along with that wiring foot note

Worked a bit more on that PAX door today.

Pulled the wiring harness through the channel. I thought that would be a bitch but thankfully it got in easier than I had pulled it out!!
A tiny wire helped it a lot!!
The thin wire lets its self follow the curves of the channel easily
http://i821.photobucket.com/albums/zz135/alex-akos/delo%20resto/9C4A0FA9-98E2-4198-B52D-32F58302D928_zpsvhopqk4d.jpg
twisted and taped it around the harness pushing on one side and pulling on the other
http://i821.photobucket.com/albums/zz135/alex-akos/delo%20resto/5D1B5271-EF71-4495-A071-7007DFDF4356_zps8kmq1jgt.jpg

On to adding the door lock and latch mechanisms.
http://i821.photobucket.com/albums/zz135/alex-akos/delo%20resto/9AF64AEA-F27F-4EE7-8FE8-1E0E3A3EC9D2_zpsdd5amtn1.jpg

Also repaired the power window motor. Too it apart greased it and thankfully it works... a bit noisy though :P

Finally I cut a couple of heat shield styrofoam sheets about 2 cm thick...
http://i821.photobucket.com/albums/zz135/alex-akos/delo%20resto/102A9A6C-5ED5-4011-ADAC-82CBCA025F6C_zpsy68wex8j.jpg

and placed them into the head sink gap of the door. That should keep some of the high temperatures of Greece off my head.

You are right my lord!
But if you make a proper fastening to avoid the exterior to crack or if the actuator works stress free by aligning it correctly then you have a very good bet of it lasting a long time.

Wow, good job! Looks great! Much easier than on the car.

Just a tip, when you assemble all the panels back onto the pontoon, you will have to regrain across the joins to blend in the grain. Or else, it will look like separate finishes on each panel. eg. Like the T-Panel and roof of the doors.

Point taken. Than you Sensei.

BTW The 120 grit paper leaves behind smoother grooves than the original texture of the Delorean panels. That creates a better shine and less error movements are visible.
I would never recommend anyone to use 60 or 80 grit for finishing with bare hand! It is IMPOSSIBLE to create perfect movements for a smooth looking texture.

Looking at the 80 Grit I had, it was so coarse that I would not even try to attempt to use it. The only time I would think that you would use it is to pull out very deep scratches quickly.

I know what you are saying..but it all comes down to pressure.
If you were to run it with the wolfhead that barely scratches the surface...
I used a sponge between my hand and the sand paper, and made fast long strokes from end to end to have lines run across the panel
check his image out of the T-panel
On the left you see the finished sample.. The right is undone

Notice how vivid the lines are on the right.

Don't get me wrong, I like the 120 outcome better. More shine! Easier to work with by hand.

To take out deep scratches.. I used the 60 grit, then 80 and finish passes on 120! :strongman: hehehe

My grain came out a little more defined.

Maybe it's the sandpaper we are using that are not stating exactly what the grit is?! I have bought cheap sandpaper from one of the those $2 shops, and some of the grit doesn't look/feel much different from the number printed on between them.

That's also dutch, but 'Verf' + 'Lucht' becomes 'Paint' + 'Smell'. Not the word i was suggesting.

it all comes down to the same thing, that you did something stupid. Don't worry, you're not alone.

I am referring to construction quality and driving feel.

And the Delorean doesn't like that in some kind of way? I think my Lancia Beta was built a little more accurately than the Delorean. But I wont mention the rust, .... or the electrics!
