Someone help me pick a new video game!

I'm a very, VERY casual gamer. Play maybe an hour a week, and only even for short stints with maybe 6 months on, 6 months off. Just something to do if nothing else is demanding my immediate attention and the book/TV supply has been exhausted.

I only have a PS3 - so computer games and other console platforms need not apply.

I mostly like adventure/puzzle games but won't disqualify ones that include heavy action too. For example, no interest in the straight Call of Duty/Halo/FPS kind of genre, but I just finished BioShock 2 and really really enjoyed it and the first one. In days past I played stuff like Myst (and all the sequels), 7th Guest, 11th Hour, The Journeyman Project (one of my favorite series of all time,) Alone in the Dark, etc. Those kind of games appeal a lot.

Doesn't have to be the new hotness. In fact I prefer buying used games at huge discounts (my way of stickin' it to the man, I guess) so an older title would be just fine. I won't have played or seen or even heard of it yet.

Any suggestions? I had a copy of the first Assassin's Creed that I tried out earlier this weekend and hated. Story was very promising but the controls were horribly obtuse.

I hate WoW but I loved the Elder Scrolls. It's a story driven RPG and not a button pusher. It is way closer to the Journeyman Project series than WoW. If you want something modern (ie, guns) go with the Fallout series. Either Fallout 3 or New Vegas.

Yeah, I hate WoW as well :) I tried it a long time ago and was just terrible. I was the guy who'd show up for raids and people would suddenly start having connection issues.....

Skyrim is an ENORMOUS game, my girlfriend as at least 100 hrs in to her's and i think she still only completed like 45%. However Id recommend it on PC only, there are alot of DLCs that really make the game much more fun and less frustrating. My favorite game of lately was GTA4, I havent been playing games much these days but I have far too much of my life spent destroying Liberty City.

I have a PS3 for two reasons. Gran Tursimo and Red Dead Redemption. Both are cheap in the used market. There's also a Red Dead Redemption Undead Nightmare follow up thats fun. -Patrick M

I forgot to say I love racing games and especially GTA. I bought my PS2 to play GTA 3, and upgraded to the PS3 for GTA 4. But that's not what I'm after right now anyway :) I played GTA 3, Vice City and 4 into the ground. Never spent that much time on a game before or since.

I'd suggest DiRT 3 as a racing game...but then I'm biased since I helped make it :D

If you haven't checked it out, consider "The Walking Dead" adventure game, downloadable on PSN. Wonderful episodic adventure game that breaks down into nice gaming sessions :)

As of a couple of months ago, you can buy GTA Vice City for the PS3 on the PSN for $9.99. The only downside is they didn't up-convert to fit the HD screen-size, so on your native HD screen settings, the picture for the game is SD.

I don't play many video games these days anymore either but when I do they're usually sports-related (Mainly baseball, hockey, college football, and F1 racing).

I am a hardcore gamer for my age. I try to play everyday for stress releif.. I would agree with Red Dead as a great game. I would really try Uncharted 2 (cheap and great. won Game of the year) Dirt 3 and Grid are the best racing games out there for sound, gamplay! If jwrayth really helped make that game you are my hero!! love that game. Nothing better than turning that game way UP on the surround sound! Any Questions let me know. Ive played alot. also God of War 3 is great for action and puzzles ( same as Uncharted 2)

You said you like puzzle games, it is hard to beat Portal 2 in that regard. I've yet to find a fan of puzzle games that doesn't like Portal 2.

Oh man, I loved that game. I'm clearly a terrible person for asking for help and forgetting to include all these things :) Portal and Portal 2 were probably my favorite games in the last decade.

If you enjoy open-world and puzzle games then I suggest Assassin's Creed 2. It has excellent writing, scenery and plenty of exploration / puzzle / platforming as well as some swordfighting. The first game is skippable, it is much more combat focused.

I really enjoyed the last two batman games on PS3. They were both really fun.....and kept me from working on my car all the time!

So don't play the batman PS3 games! :)

The Walking Dead. Great game for the casual gamer, adventure point and click style game, not an FPS. The hook is that all your choices have an impact on the other characters you interact with and follow you the duration of the game. Fantastic story telling. If you like the TV show this is a must play. Plus, it is only $25. Made by TellTale, the same company that did the new(er) BTTF game.

Another vote for Uncharted (any of them) or The Walking Dead. Another suggestion is FarCry3. Amazing open world adventure FPS. I put 35 hours into that game, and I very seldom play games that much.

Thanks chaps! Lots of overtime, but it's worth it for games like DiRT 3 and Grid 2 (DiRT Showdown not so much, heh).

LOVE red dead redemption. Didn't think I would like it, but it is really cool. The game of the year edition has the undead edition as well, and that game is just as fun. I also own walking dead, that is a good game to, but I'm more into red dead at the moment. Great graphics, and it takes place in the Wild West. The game is huge. You can do everything from looting, to hunting. Not to mention your missions.

Black ops 2 nba2k13 tiger woods golf heavy in my rotation right now. Got assasins creed 3 played for like 2 hours and was over it. I actually liked dirt 2 better than 3. Maybe ill throw it back in and give it another go.

Burnout Paradise. Racing game that is more fast and silly fun than simulation accurate. Good entertainment for $10 (it is an older title on the PS3). If you're like me, I might sit and play for 20-30 minutes before losing interest. Burnout Paradise works well with those of us that grew up into a short attention span.

Puzzles and Marty McFly and you could get all 5 episodes of the BTTF game downloaded for $20. Not the hardest puzzles, but fun for DMC fans.

There are a few of the "Midway Arcade Origins" type titles that are cheap and fun... and nostalgic.

Agreed on the Assassins Creed controls. Garbage.

Some of the Lego games are fun. Again, not the hardest puzzle type stuff of all time, but a good way to take a break and it helps when you can recite any of the movies in your sleep for Star Wars or Indiana Jones for example.

An alternative to Call of Duty could be Battlefield 3. Same general idea but different in key ways. Much bigger screens/areas and you can pilot/drive just about anything and blow up your scenery if you want too. Tired of the sniper up in that window? Grab a tank and blow the building up.

DUST 514, it's a new FPS that's still in Open Beta, so there's not much variety in Maps to play. However the skills are not being reset when it goes live. So it's worth trying and getting toon started. The game also links with EvE Online.

Wow! Yeah, I played Interstate '82! I got it because it was the only game I was aware of at the time that had a DeLorean in it. I enjoyed it, but more just because I got to drive a DeLorean than it being that good of a game. I don't remember too many details from it now. That must have been back in 2000,

I have played Burnout Paradise! It's crazy fun. Good idea. I tried the BTTF game, downloaded the demo - hate to say it, but it was a bit lame! Not even my starry-eyed love of BTTF could save that one for me :)
