I took the car out to Tower Shops last night. Before I went though I swapped out my rear louvers (had cracks in 3 places) for the ones off of 1045 as well as the struts as the ones on the car weren't holding it up in cool temps anymore. Not much fun to align alone but the latch secures the louvers properly now. The sun came out today so I'll be working on pulling parts to ship today.

Fixed my fuel pump issues, with a lot of help....

Full details are here: http://dmctalk.org/showthread.php?8085-Hot-start-problem-resolved-due-to-failed-check-valve-in-the-DMCH-fuel-pump&p=132755&viewfull=1#post132755

Summary: It *was not* the new DMCH combo unit's fault, so I really hope my issue will not taint anyone's impression of that part.

Needed to turn the engine by hand so attempted to remove the muffler. Got the clamps off, but the 2004-vintage "Performance Exhaust" muffler is rusted solid to the cat pipes. Soaking the cat-to-header flange join/hardware with penetrating oil overnight to see if I can drop the muffler that way.

Seriously thinking of converting to dual exhaust in light of having to dismantle this godawful setup. I'd hate to put that big-ass muffler back only to do this all over again in the future.

Oh yea. Been there. Some random guy two years ago followed me home, parked at the end of my driveway and came walking into my garage. I'm like, "ah, can I help you?" "Oh, no, just really had to see your car. I'm glad you don't live far or I might have had to run you off the road to get you to stop." Gotcha. Well, thanks for that. I enjoyed the first Warm day we've had for a while, by driving up North to meet fellow DeLorean owner and member, Andy Blackmon in a Jack's parking lot.

What started out as a meeting between the two of us, (He let me drive his stage 2 car :Headspin: ), resulted in a *Mini* car show.
We found that when two DeLoreans are in a parking lot, (visible from the road), people stop by, take pics and ask lots of questions.

Great day!

How's all that snow treating the rest of the country? :mooning:

One of my headlights went out, so I went to Autozone and replaced both with Sylvania Xtravisions. The Ultrastars looked good, but I didn't think they were worth the price considering how little better they seemed than the Xtravisions.

So after two years of stripping, scrapping, locating donors, welding, and epoxy coating, 774's Donor frame is.....Complete!

And Every rare chance I have of mating the body is stolen away by endless snow storms. I can't even begin to express my DEEP hatred for the snow this year. It snows, melts a little bit enough to do the body, my day off comes around, snows again! And being that I do not have a garage to work in makes this task near impossible to tackle. During the first snowfall I was bundled up like Luke on Hoth installing all four suspensions, steering rack, radiator, and various other components over frozen ground and snow :poke:. The Body is on blocks all ready for the drop yet its surrounded by a foot of snow and the snow is still coming. My goal of driving it to DCS is slowly thinning the more it snows.

Anyway, Here are a few pictures of the completed frame awaiting its body. Thanks Matt Bozievich for the donor car and to Tom Sweeney for his courteous and professional work performed and of course Meghan for not only LAB metal-ing and POR-15 painting the entire frame while I welded but for not being the average chick.

Please Note: Due to the ice covering the tarp I'm unable to take more current photos. Since these photos were taken the Heater pipes and hose are all clipped and completed as well as the brake cables, SS clutch line and radiator hose on the left. The coolant pipes have also been completed along with all new rubber fuel hoses on the hard lines and many other little odds and ends. The Frame has new-ish DMCH Eibach Shocks thanks to Steve Graham, all new bushings everywhere, coils, Blue Silicone hoses everywhere, new thinner cooling fans, new rubber fuel hoses, brake rotors and bearings, and many more parts. With much satisfaction and relief everything that mounts to the crumple tubes went on perfectly with no errors. I was mortified throughout the fabrication process on what the final outcome would be but they are GREAT! I can definitely make those again but Its not pleasant at all.

The new DMCH fuel pump/sender unit looks really good but the only problem I have is that I am unable to install the cover: It's hitting the top of the fuel pump. I suspect that my fuel tank may be pushed up a little too far... And the reason for that is that I think I put some of those protective foam strips between the close out plate and the tank during my reno a few years back. Hmmm.....

Are you sure it's pushed down all the way and oriented like the install guide specifies? I had that issue too and it came down to alignment (rotation) of the pump. Another owner had a similar issue and it ended up being that the clamp wasn't installed correctly and the pump was riding on top of it. Worth a look.

Good point, Jon. The fit between the pump and the hole in the tank is very tight. I even put a dab of oil around the lip to get it to slide in. But once I installed the clamp I wasn't 100% sure that the pump was actually fully seated any longer. It's like it wanted to slide back out/up due to the compression. However, the interference between the cover and the connector is too significant for the seating of the pump to be the problem. It needs another inch of clearance. Also, no matter how much I rotated the pump (check the picture, it is rotated in the exact direction the instructions tell you to) the pump connector would still hit the cover. That's why I thought that maybe the tank is just sitting to high up, but I may be wrong...

Your input is much appreciated.

Maybe I'll shoot another one of my award winning videos :)

Yeah. . . I would have liked to try and do the change over when I had actually rolled the old one over 100,000, but needed to redo cabled, angle drive, etc. so did not want to wait for that. That is why I took a number of before and after pics to help document the differences. Either I added 8000 miles to the car, or removed 92,000. At this stage in its life, I figure the additional 8k would not make a huge difference. . . and I have the differences documented in case I ever sell the car.

Didn't want to muck around with it too much. While I figured I could hook up a drill or my dremel and roll that forward until the mileage matched, I also figured it would be too much of a pain for 92,000 miles. No idea how long that would take.

Its labeled "Siemens PM106" on a sticker on the motor. Its NAPA part number is "BK 6551005". Napa online also lists it as a Balkamp product, which it was not when I got it at their warehouse store. When I was searching specifically for a "Siemens PM106" previously, it resulted in Siemens having discontinued production. The part I bought was absolutely full of dust so it had been there for a long while. I've swapped the cage over and it fits fine. All thats left for that quick project is to put it back in the car.

Thanks to Jim for this post a couple hundred pages back on this thread. :D

I will have to remember the seat belt trick! I need to replace my rub strips as well.

Today I added 3 strips of 5050 Ultraviolet LEDs to help illuminate the instrument cluster. I have white LEDs that illuminate the trip and main odometers, everything else is now UV. I will post a picture if everything reassembled and on when it gets dark again this evening.

Final testing of the UV's before installing the binnacle back in to the car:

Took the D on holiday again and, on arrival a few days ago, found my power antenna stuck up - ironic as I normally never listen to anything whilst driving the D and while away need to put the car cover over her.

Couldn't get it to go down so had to cut into the motor's direct wiring and, being away and thus only having tools not other stuff like spare wire, I had to use a residential extension cord from the place we are staying and some MacGyver paperclips to short 12V directly to the motor itself to force it down.

Thinking of going digital radio so might just remove the power antenna altogether when I get home... for now I've left it disconnected so it doesn't go up and get stuck again.

Thanks to Jim for this post a couple hundred pages back on this thread. :D

While my fan worked, it was making horrible noises that were so concerning to my wife that she didn't want to drive in the car. Oiling the fan only went so far, fixed the screeching, but still noisy. I bought the PM106 Jim suggested, and it is a perfect fit, Identical to stock.

Pictures and video below for comparisons

I started working on my sunshade louvre, it's cracked in multiple places.

The PO repaired a crack on the perimeter using a piece of flat stock, but he straightened the [curved] louvre and riveted the flat stock to it. Effectively, he built a stress point into the louvre and 2 more cracks developed as a result.

I started by transferring the curve from the good side of the louvre onto a 1/4" plywood strip that I'll clamp to the edge of the broken side to maintain the proper curve as I make the repair.

I also made a pattern for the flat-stock I'll use for the repair and test-fitted it on the good side of the louvre, so when I make the repair it'll match the good side. I made the pattern out of a piece of wood the same thickness as the flat stock I'll use.

I bought 7 cans of SEM trim black from Advance Auto & used a 50% code. :thumbup:

So far, it's going really well.....

I pulled off (or more correctly dropped) the fuel tank cover plate. I knew that the master brake cylinder had been replaced by the PO (nice and shinny) and due to some rust on the front of the brake booster, but I'd been warned to look at the fuel tank cover plate to see where else the brake fluid could have gotten to. Well it did get to the cover plate and a section of about 2sqft of the epoxy was bubbled. I scraped it all off (the bubbled bits come off with very little persuasion). Underneath was (thankfully) only a very thin coating of rust. I cleaned that off with Naval Jelly and repainted the plate. I also found some bubbling (maybe 6sqin) at the front of the fuel tank area on the LH side (just under the master cylinder), but it was also easily removed, cleaned, and painted.

Some 'lumps' in the epoxy on the bottom of the fuel tank closing plate turned out to be just that, lumps of epoxy.

I installed the DMOCO SS Shift Plate in my car. But to my chagrin, it seems as though 5875's shift linkage requires some adjustment, as the shifter totally didn't jive with the slots in the gated shift plate. This is something I don't feel comfortable attempting to do on my own, but I would think it be quite a simple fix for someone who know what they're doing, right?
Also, I think I'll have to get DPI's new SS shift stick to go with it!
Anyway, it's back to the leather shift boot for now.

Installed some new front tires in preparation for a long club drive at the end of the month. The car had NCTs in the rear and one Falken and one Douglas tire up front when I bought it. I replaced the NCTs right away with Cooper Cobras, but was too cheap to replace the fronts. Now the Cobras are no longer available, so I'm running Cooper CS4 Tourings in the front. Front and rear still don't match, but at least they are the same brand as the rear now and same tire left to right!

I've learned over the past year (in some cases the hard way) that certain things aren't worth putting off replacing to save a buck - and tires are near, if not at, the top of that list.

Also, in the "What did you do last weekend?" category, I went on a drive with Jon (jawn101) out on Hwy 128 headed west from Winters, CA. Yes, it is a funny name for a California town that has no idea what winter is like. :)

Along the way we stopped at a park, a great brewery (http://berryessabrewingco.com/home/), and tapas dinner. An absolutely amazing drive!

I put the suction cup GoPro mount I got for Christmas to good use and made this video. It clocks in at 4:30 and includes a few pictures from the day and one of the many great waves we got. I thought it turned out decent enough for a first try.

Later that night, on my drive home, I got pulled over for the first time in the DeLorean (had it since Aug 2008). Here is a rough transcript:
Officer: First off, very cool car!
Me: Thanks!
Officer: Before I turned on my lights I told dispatch 'I think I am about to pull over a DELOREAN!' I pulled you over because I couldn't run your plate in the computer and wanted to make sure no one stole your very cool car. Can I see your license and registration?
Me: Sure (I hand it to her)
Officer: Oh! I needed to put an "HV" in front of the numbers for historical plates. Have a great night!

Kind of funny that even the cops don't know how to run historical plates. Also found it funny how excited she was about pulling over a DeLorean.

More than decent, that was very nicely shot and edited.

Until somebody comes up with a better technique I think you've set the standard for mounting video cams on DeLoreans. The door-swing sequences are great and thanks for hiliting the waves from other drivers.

Thanks, that is very kind. I wasn't quite sure where to mount it so I tried a couple still shots in my garage prior. I'll probably try a couple other locations, but this one seemed like a good balance between capturing the car and scenery at the same time. I wish I had a second camera to mount near the wheel. The more angles the better.

Unless there was a DeLorean in the area that was reported stolen, I don't see where the probable cause was for effectuating such a stop. There's real crime going on, and they waste our (taxpayers') time and resources on this nonsense! Not to mention the FACT that the officer was apparently inept at actually doing her job.

I actually ran bogus (expired April of 2011, not to mention from a different state) plates on my car all last year. I was followed by cops, given the thumbs up by cops, and even had one get along side me and carry on a conversion through open windows with me at a stop light. NONE ever ran my plate, as I gave them no reason to, otherwise my rear end would have been in a little bit of trouble. I don't plan on pushing that luck this year though, so I'll be properly registering it before driving it this year - only have to decide what state to register it in and what kind of plate I want to get...

I'm guessing that people dedicated and responsible enough to have a car that qualifies for historical plates shy away from the dumb stunts that get you pulled over.

I think the thread title might be better listed as: What have you done to your DeLorean this week as I don't get on here every day.

I sold the wheels off of 1729 and got rid of the drag radials. I mounted a set of dark grey wheels that seem more fitting to me on a gas flap hood car and got new Coopers at the same time.

I also replaced my cross-gate cable AGAIN. I replaced it with another 33 year old cable, but we'll see how long this one lasts. The 2nd one stopped working when my wife was trying to take the car to work, seriously bad luck for me!

Replaced my fuel accumulator - what a total and utter nightmare trying to get at that hardline let alone those old stiff as shit hoses.

However, new hoses plus installed Hervey's stainless braided replacement for that hardline - took the accumulator back out again TWICE for shits and giggles, boy it's such a piss easy quick job now without those old hoses or hardline! :) :) :)

Replaced my fuel filter while I was at it, figured might as well been on the road now for nearly two years, and jumpered the pump to bleed the system out.

It really wasn't a big deal. The officer was very professional and easy going about it. The probable cause was that my plate didn't run, which was her fault, but if a plate doesn't run I'd expect to get pulled over. In California not only can they run your plate whenever they want, there are automated systems that run ALL plates (https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2014/01/los-angeles-cops-should-release-automatic-license-plate-reader-records-eff-aclu).

As of 2012 Automated License Plate Recognition is used by >70% of police departments nationwide in the U.S. And it's similar outside the USA.

By the same token it is not employed everywhere in California.

It's possible that the officer who checked on David was doing a "manual" check or her ALPR was fooled by his CA Historical plate.

In any case drivers in most parts of most Western countries, including the U.S., have no reasonable expectation of anonymity (the records will display the registered owner) when on most public roads.

me? ive not done anything with mine. its actually becoming an eye sore because i bought it as a project to work on at school where im going, but i had to send the title back to the person i bought it off of because it was an estate vehicle and i couldnt get it switched in my homestate because the owner and seller were 2 different people, so i sent the title back almost 3 months ago and havent got it let alone hear anything too constructive from the seller. i came within a fly's hair of parting it out (but im not going to do that after thinking about it for a loooooooong time). mines depressing everytime i look at it.

Ouch, I went through that with Vin 5188. After 4 months of trying to get it corrected I brought a lawyer into the equation and the seller immediately said he would buy it back. NJ does not like title jumping which is what the seller was trying to do, as it seemed he didn't want to go through the trouble to get it registered and correct titles from the original owner who passed away. Anyway, it worked out for the best as I got a much better car with 1494 :D

I just don't like 'big brother' tracking my every move. If you're fine with 'big brother' watching/tracking your every move, that's fine - more power to you. But I don't. Other states have more respect for privacy rights, thus I'll stick with those states. If CA wants me to visit, then they should enact laws to protect my privacy, as opposed to destroying it.

David didn't do anything illegal. In order to conduct a stop, the police must have at a minimum a 'reasonable suspicion' that a crime is being committed. In David's case, there wasn't a 'reasonable suspicion' of any crime having been committed, thus the stop constituted little more than an unlawful false imprisonment. He could technically sue the police department for damages, but he'd probably lose given the current status of the CA judicial system.

Bottom line is that I don't like it when my rights/privacy are slowly eroded away under the guise of bettering the collective. I'm not a Borg drone - I'm an American who values the principles upon which this nation was founded.

NSA! OBAMA! WORSE THAN HITLER!

I could write a whole book on this, but I'm afraid that I'd get in trouble for getting political. I will say that Hitler was far more honest than Obama has been...

If believing in the sanctity of privacy and protection of that privacy against extreme governmental intervention makes me an honorary member of tin foil hat gang, then so be it - I'll wear such a hat proudly. I least I stand for principles that adamantly believe in and am willing to fight for.

Annnnnnnnnyyy waaaaayyyyy.

I brought 3205 home last night. It had been living under traps at a friends compound while work on 3922 took place this winter. It's obvious I've got some work to do.

1. The gas pedal was stiff as a board - my guess is it's time to replace the throttle cable and really clean out the sheath with detergents and compressed air. I noticed in the past it was getting stiffer, but this is almost unusable - it may snap if i drove it like this. You can really exert a lot of force with your legs.

2. I got locked in for the first time ever. One of the latches on the drivers door would not release. It's been 4 years since my last lock'n latch procedure on 3205 so I guess I was due for a nice little lock-in.

3. Brake and clutch flush - it's been 3 years. I'm due.

4. Coolant flush - it's been 4 years. I'm due

5. Based on the previous 4 and my DeLorean related OCD I've come to the conclusion I need to do a frame off restoration. Hah.

Yeah, the stainless is kind of hit or miss. I tried it out as well, didn't have issues with it falling off, but given the grain on the stainless I figured it wasn't an airtight seal. The first 40 seconds of this video show a couple shots taken near the wheel when attached to the front fender. Not as good of a video as the Winters drive, I was just playing around with a few different mounting points by driving around town.

Replaced a few small sections of coolant hosing that was still rubber with silicone - such as between the front bleeder valve and radiator, between rear bleeder valve and junction, etc. Also replaced runoff hose from coolant tank with a nice long length of silicone so it doesn't piss all over frame. Also added cutoff valve for rear bleeder, tightened all hoses (already did the valley when I was back in there couple months ago), etc.

Ran her for a little while to re-test for fuel/coolant/pressure leaks from recent works.

My MaxJax car lift got delivered today (only ordered it last week!) - $2000 at Costco including shipping and lift-gate delivery (ends 31 Mar 2014). Despite having a tail lift on the truck the driver needed some 2x4s to put on the arms of his pallet truck to give it some more height (the pallet arms at full height were just slightly too low to fully lift the package (800lbs) properly). He finally got it off the truck but couldn't get it on to the driveway. So I spent another 1.5 hours in the rain unpacking the shipping frame and taking the parts separately into the garage. The largest parts (the lift columns) were probably 150-200 lbs each. I used my trolley to move them around and up into the garage.

Next comes installation :)

I would love to have one of these at some point but I've always been worried about the floor. How did you certify that your garage floor was of an appropriate strength to equip with the MaxJax?

Tear it up and pour a new one. Either before or after you crack the old one.

Wouldn't the specs of the garage floor be in the same file as the blueprints for the house? You can ask for those when you buy your house, I think.

Yeah right. If it's a tract house you'll never know (assume 3 inches over pea gravel if you are lucky), and if its a custom house that info's gone with the first owner. I've owned 4 houses and never seen prints of anything. We got prints on our building and the building doesn't match the prints in a few somewhat major features.

Years ago when I build my home garage addition I specified 5 inches per the lift maker, made it deeper (more like 7) where the lift stanchions were to go, and added 1/2" rebar in the whole floor and anchored the rebar into the foundation footings.

This is not such a huge deal on a free-standing lift like that max-jack (worst that will happen is you crack the floor), but if you are anchoring a 2-post lift to the floor it is hugely important as the lift could fall over with a car on it.

Certifying the PSI can only be done by either ensuring that 3000 psi was poured and then cured for the requisite time, or by taking a core sample from the floor and having it tested. Not terribly practical.

I drilled test holes in the concrete to test the depth. The Wej-it anchors require a depth of 4 5/8 inch, but they start 5/8 inch below flush and end up about 1/8 inch below flush as part of the setting process.

My Wife volunteered my DeLorean for one of her coworker's wives birthday party. I picked the wife up at her house and took her to the party. I then ended up taking all the kids and a few Big Kids to for a ride around the block in the "D". My daughter gave me a Doc Brown Costume for my birthday and I wore it today. The DeLorean was the hit of the party.

My wife doesn't really like the car, she tolerates it. She could not understand why everyone was giggling, laughing and so excited about the car. One of the 15 year old girls got out of the car and was jumping up and down and dancing talking about how cool it was. She didn't get it.

It was the first decent weather day of Spring, so I decided to visit the DeLorean and wake it up. Started right up. It hunted for idle for a few minutes, but settled shortly after (maybe 2 mins). Just drove down the street to the Shell station and put about a third of a tank of 91 in and then drove around the block before heading back to the garage to put her back under the cover. Other than the longer-than-usual idle hunting, 5875 ran as though she had been driven yesterday. I suppose this is normal after its been sitting for about four months. I'm looking forward to some consistent good weather and clear roads so I can actually bring the car home and keep it there for the season.
This year I'm planning on having the brake rotors & pads replaced, SS fuel lines installed, shift linkage adjusted to fit the gated shift plate, new SS shift lever, getting the speedo/odometer fixed, and possibly getting the door locks/rods functioning properly. Woohoo!

It was highly complex. I don't know if it's a job for the layperson. :)

I will say that the new cap seals a whole lot better and doesn't require me to stop the BTTF theme when I pull over to gas up.

Visited my friend Dave (sdg3205) and let my sweet VIN 3922 fly (put it on stands off the ground).

- Crouched underneath to check where the ATF leaks came from.
- Tightened the screws around the automatic transmission oil pan a bit more (carefully to not break the new gasket).
- Noticed a small leak at the oil light switch on the engine. (Damn!)
- Upper transmission cooling pipe/hose is "sweating" ATF (hoseclamp fix did not work)
- Fired off an email to Toby from DMC NW

We then put 3922 back on its wheels and went for an evening cruise in convoy with Dave's 3205. Nice evening after all! :headbang:

Crouched underneath to check where the ATF leaks came from.

If it is still leaking ATF, a spot that was leaking on my car last season was the seal around the bottom of the dipstick tube. It snugs into a hole on the topside of the pan and has an o-ring or two to seal it. There is also a small piece of the dipstick tube acting as a bracket that lets you bolt the bottom in place. Mine had never been a problem until I left the front jacked up in the air for a few days and with the cold temps in my garage, I think the ATF started to seep past the seal.

Glad you guys in BC are getting your summer car season weather!!

Tasks completed:
- replaced wiper blades and one wiper arm to reset wiper rest position
- reused one wiper arm, which turned out not to be a great idea (the rainy weather on the way back showed me that the old arm is now jumping on the windshield and causes dirt marks)
- readjusted driver side torsion bar by a notch (Thank you Toby (a.k.a. the master - DMC NW)
- had a walk through of the car with Toby determining the next steps to make VIN 3922 a non-leaking, awesome daily driver
- had a ton of coffee!

- swapped driver's side and passenger's side windshield wiper arms to get good alignment with Michelin wipers
- looking awesome and wipers are on sale for $8.50 CAN per blade. Will get a second pair!
- troubleshooted why dome lights do not turn off when closing doors
- determined that it must be the delay relay based on the circuit plan
- have LEDs installed and knew that the dimmer module will not work with them but did not know how this "will not work" does look like
- took the dimmer relay off and voila: it is working fine! Will need to get a dimmer relay from Dave (Bitsyncmaster), if I wish to get dimmer capability.

Volker,

Try the procedure, but we may need to adjust your striker pins. The latch itself will move 1/4" in either direction if you loosen the big philips screws. Sometimes thats all you need.

Also, I have your washer bottle! Not sure when I'll see you next but you probably want to get it re-installed!

You don't need a spring compressor to replace either ball joint. The upper is unloaded, and the lower is held in place by the shock so it isn't loaded either with the car off the ground.

Now that I finally have my dream garage, I've spent the past month getting around to all the little (and some not so little) projects on 4149. Here's a list of everything that I have done since the beginning of March:

Rebuild back of drivers seat cover.
Repair / fabricate wire on bottom of driver's seat;
Clean / paint seat tracks;
Replace steering column bushing, weld steering column mesh;
Rebuild / repair upper and lower steering column cover;
Repair door ajar light;
Repair fasten seatbelt light (easy fix by jumping two contacts in the buzzer plug);
Wire "Cooling Fan Fail" light to turn on with cooling fans (used black paint to cover "fail" from behind.)
Fix "Lock Doors" light;
Fix turn signal / hazard switch wiring, clean contacts of hazard switch;
Front and rear facia alignment;
Repair starter wire to resistor;
Repair radio wiring;
Repair alternator wiring, replace battery bulb;
Restore / refinish binacle (Not 100% perfect, but it looks pretty good);
Replace slave cylinder;
Replace hose from bottle to cluch master;
Replace left parking brake cable and all parking brake pads;
Repair trip odometer reset shaft;
Align door striker pins;
Replace spark plugs;
Repair broken plastic high beam tab in multifunction switch (I drilled and tapped broken plastic tab and base, then I used 2-56 screw to reconnect. It took 2 hours but I saved about $100!)
Drill and replace broken sway bar to frame bolt;
Replace passenger radiator hose and hose from bottle to pipe; and,
Oil change.

I just made a to-do list and tried to do a little each day. Of couse the list kept getting longer! Most nights I tried to call it quits by 11:00 but there were a few midnights and at least 1:00 AM. Charged up the battery in preparation for starting for the first time this spring. I also ordered a few new air cleaner filter elements from DMCMW. I'm waiting for a nice rain to wash away all the salt still covering the roads and then I'll finally be able to go for a drive.

I know what you're thinking what does taking your laptop apart have to do with "What Did You Do To Your DeLorean Today".

I'm prepping my car for the Celebration car show tomorrow. I just finished painting some screw heads and Rock protection grill. I was getting the stuff ready to pack and put my GoPro in the car. I thought I'd put the camera in the car and capture some of what the people at the car show say. Well I have two 64 GB cards one is in the camera and I was looking for the other one. I grabbed the laptop and took the SD card out to see if it was in the carrier. It wasn't so I (without looking of course) I put it in the slot. Not the slot for the SD card the slot for the DVD. So took the bottom off took the DVD player out took it apart it came out finally.

Sometimes I'm a idiot :mallet:

Anyway packing and headed to Celebration

Took her to Firestone Complete Auto Care for an alignment. I was as nervous as a parent taking their child to the emergency room! First verified that their alignment specs. matched the owners manual, and then gave the ok. Unfortunately they do not offer their "lifetime alignment" for the D ("because it's considered an exotic car") but it all went well - I was pleased!

Got passenger side LCA off. Spring compressor worked OK but I replaced the lower arms with a 1/4" flat aluminum plate. I did not see one of the arms is longer than the other (so it fits the spring square) and I put the long one on the wrong side. But it worked anyway.

My spring had a 1/4" flat plate (ring) on the top of the spring. Not sure if that is stock or just with my "ROBs" springs. The top rubber seat looks in good shape.

Probably won't get much done this week but will try to get some more work done on it.

Installed PJ Grady front lowering springs. Looks better.

Just an FYI, the $199 springs were $43 to ship from NY to NM and were not painted or powder coated. Another $75 later and they were coated. This was a very unexpected expense. They were just bare metal with a hint of light surface rust. Had I known this I probably wouldn't have bought them. It was still cheaper than buying the $400 set of 4 Eibach springs from DMCH but two for $274 (not counting shipping) was a bit annoying.

Before starting I measured the height of the top of the wheel well to be 25 inches from the ground with the tape measure running perpendicular to the ground and intersecting the center of the wheel.

After? 25.25 inches. Higher? Must've been the uneven ground, weight shifting on the sloped driveway, etc. hrmmm.... there's definitely less space above the tire though. My foot doesn't fit in there the way it used to when I demonstrated the gap to others. I used a bubble level on the door trim and see the front is now sloped down and not up anymore (this was done in my level garage, not the driveway).

Last night while working. Side by side original and PJ Grady:

If you haven't been out for a drive yet then she will sit high because the spring is still quite expanded.

If you have been out don't stress, it'll take a few weeks of drives it to fully settle to her new natural height.

I reckon my Eibachs took about a month before she stopped sitting lower every time I took her out.

Also, make suer that you did the final tightening of everything with weight on the front tires. There was a member in the DMA who tightened everything while the car was on a lift, and everything did not settle/sit where they were supposed to be. Once it was loosened and then make tight, with the weight on the front tires, everything settled correctly.

Very good suggestions about weighing down the front before final tightening. I'll give her a month to adjust before I take a wrench to the bolts.

Thanks!

Yeah I agree this is really important... Any suspension fasteners that involve a bushing should be torqued with weight on the suspension. One option is to put the car on ramps and torque with the wheels on.... If that is too difficult to access the fasteners then you can use jack stands and a floor jack. I had the car on jack stands and put a block of wood between the lower control arm and the floor jack and compressed the suspension until the car just about lifted off the jack stand at that corner. The goal is to get the geometry of the suspension as close as possible to where it will be sitting once the car is on the ground.

Not only is this important for ride height but you'll also prevent preloading the suspension bushings. Preloaded bushings will wear out faster since they're always under torsional stress even if the car is just sitting stationary.

This is less of an issue with poly bushings since the center sleeve is typically free to rotate and won't preload the bushing even if torqued with the suspension free hanging.

Ugh, dont remind me about that. We could get some more snow tonight even, though most of it will be north of the cities.

I had some burnout last fall after working tirelessly on building a brother in-law's deck, continuous maintenance on my father in-law's rentals, moving my kids to new bedrooms downstairs, tearing down my own shed, trying to build a new 1-car garage to replace it, then winter hitting too soon. Lost a garage stall all winter with the shed's stuff taking up the spot. I'm still stuck now with my replacement "shed" as I cannot find two of my property boundary pins, and after talking with my neighbor, I probably have much less room to build it than I thought and will probably have to take out a tree to fit it in.

Picked up my windshield washer tank from Dave (sdg3205), where we had taken it out. We could not hear the windshield washer pump when we took the car apart for restoration. Well, no wonder, there was no pump in there. Just an old wet rag and a bit of water, already yucky! The pump was missing and so was the pump adapter. Thanks PO!:bigclap:

Good that DMCH started to reproduce them just a few weeks ago and Toby from DMC NW :rock_on: got me one.

So today was "fit the bits together day". Went over to my friend who has a lift. Got the Delorean up there and removed the screws holding the cover of the tank. Took the cover off and got the cable tree in my face.

Thank you 3922, I am trying to fix you! :swear1:

Found the end of the water hose and the motor connector. Fitted the new adaptor (fits awesome!) and screwed the new pump in. Checked the cable socket and fitted the tank back in, which was a bit of a mess with the cable tree on the side. Suddenly the cover of the tank would not fit anymore. Had to stretch it a bit to make the screws fit again. Fitted the washer around the filler nozzle as good as I could and filled a bit of windshield washer fluid in.
Test: heard the pump but no water coming out. Tested the ends and the pump did not push anything. Put the line under vacuum and it would not release the vacuum. So: the line was pinched somewhere. :rant:

Took the cover off again.:rant:
Checked the pump without the cover. Worked! :cheers1:

Made sure that we did not pinch the line and voila: IT IS ALIVE! (what an undirected squirt of windshield washer detergent with antifreeze can do to your brain) :frantic:

Closed everything up and it is still working. No pinch in the line.

However, the nozzle overshoots by far. It is my old windshield wiper arm, which probably got bent by the PO. The nozzle is on the lowest setting and still overshooting :rant:. Well, Toby will have the new windshield washer arm.

Fixed the passenger side front indicator. The socket is broken and does not close off properly. The socket is also rusty. Working again until I get a replacement socket from Toby.

Found a puddle of clear, slightly golden and sticky oil underneath the lower control arm of the front passenger side :ohcrap:. Not sure if it is from the car though (there was another car on the lift before, but the owner promised that he had wiped the floor before he left). Could not determine the source where the oil came from. It was a rainy day so all the dark areas on the control arm where wet. It could be the shock, but I tested it and it is still ok (old, but ok), bouncing only once. The drive back home from Langley showed nothing out of the ordinary. Car drove very well.

Well, Toby has my performance suspension kit already on side and will pull me in once he has some time for me at DMC NW. :thumb up:

Uh, and I retightened some hose clamps from the fresh installed coolant hoses. There was a drip on one of them close to the radiator and I tasted it if it is coolant :vomit_1:. Don't do that on an empty stomach! The incredible sweetness had a heavy hint of bitter aftertaste, which lasted until now. Bah!

Oh, and I am sorry, I went a bit overboard on those emoticons. I love those guys! :grouphugg:

Do you think it might be brake fluid? Maybe one of the connections for the brake lines at that front right wheel is leaking? How is the level in the reservoir? Does your brake warning light come on and off at all on the instrument cluster?

Nope, checked that. That was the first worry I had when seeing this. I was about 40 minutes out from home and had to get over the highway and a leaking brake system would have stranded me. Breaks were ok. Pushing the breaks did not leak more stuff. We then opened the reservoir and it was full up to the brim. AND we compared consistency and the fluid on the ground had less viscosity. It was much thicker and smelled differently (according to my friend, who actually smelled it...I was still recovering from the bitter taste of sweet cooling liquid).:D

We had another member recently (Can't remember who - Michael, maybe?) who had a shock blow out and start leaving unidentified fluid trails like this. I would check to make sure the shock in that corner (and then all the rest of them as well) are in good condition.

Well, we let'em bounce by pushing them down and both front ones bounced only once. They seemed to be ok. I was afraid that it blew because I am waiting for the appointment with DMC NW to get the performance suspension in. It is already there. Toby just needs to find time and I have to drive down. I am fine as long as I can "slowly" make my way to DMC NW from Vancouver.

I installed a new set of door struts the other day. It was in the mid 30's so the passenger door would still not completely open all the way without a little help. The driver's door would open to about 90% quickly and then slowly creep up to fully open in about 5 seconds. Hopefully with the warm weather coming that problem will solve itself. Otherwise I'm thinking I might have to kick up the torsion bar settings a notch. The old struts were definitely blown and wouldn't hold the door up more than 3/4 of the way even in 70 deg weather.

Does anyone know how the doors should sit with the struts completely removed? Both doors felt really heavy and after removing the strut I could lower them by hand about 95 percent of the way down before the torsion bar finally had enough spring tension to stop the door from closing completely. I'd say I was maybe an inch or so off the latch. If I let go of the door even a few inches from the closed position it would slam shut. The torsion bar is providing some counterbalance but it seems like the strut is doing most of the work.

I don't want to over spring the torsion bars either and have the doors bouncing when they fully open...but I think the soft lift struts that have that little bit of damper at the end of the stroke that would help eliminate that issue.

It's 60 degrees out today so I'll have to try the doors again and see how how much the temperature change has helped the new struts.

Jonathan
04-18-2014, 03:50 PM
Mark,

The way I understood it, the doors will hang like you have, only an inch or two from closed with the struts removed. Same goes for releasing it from a distance and seeing it slam shut. What you have described is normal to me. Also the 70 deg F rule of thumb for gauging how well the struts and torsion bars are working as a pair. My experience points to a considerable difference in door droop when the temperature drops. That being said, it is only about 10 deg C here today and with my car on the driveway this afternoon with the sun shining brightly, the doors are staying up pretty well. Somewhat similar to how your tire air pressure can go up a fair bit when sitting in the sun. Test your car indoors when the temp is 70 deg F (ideally).

Mark D
04-18-2014, 04:17 PM
Thanks for the feedback Jonathan, it's good to know that my doors were acting normally when I had the struts removed.

I'm guessing that it was just was too cold for me to expect the struts to be able to lift the door fully without a little help. We've got some warm weather coming (finally) so it'll only get better from here.

After many years I fianlly got my Delorean back onto a chassis Dyno, Kinda disapointing what the WHP is, this is a different brand dyno and yeah alot has happened in the 4 years since I dynoed before. This is a Dynocom 5000 dyno, Just compared a BMW I built at work on this dyno vs a known accurate Dynojet that it ran the day before. This dyno was about 7% lower than the DynoJet readings.

The Mustang Dyno that I ran my D on years ago gave a best of 114hp/ 145tq
The Dynocom gave a best of 105hp/ 156 tq
With the 7% correction a dyno jet "should" put out 112hp/ 167 tq

No idea where all this extra torque came from.

Went to take the car out for a drive today and noticed the battery was dead after just 5 days. Noticed right away because the Door lights were off.

Hooked up the battery booster i have and immediately the cooling fans started running. The car has Herveys cooling fans installed. My dad and i disconnected the fan from the battery and then had to use my dads car to jump start.

we then reconnected the fan to the battery. fans would stay on. we looked at the fan control unit and fuses and everything seemed in order. shook the unit around and still fans were still going. so since we were in hurry my dad decied to give the unit a good whack. on the second whack fans turned off. we waited to see if the would come back on and they did. fans are now operating normally. clearly i need to get the unit replaced... lets see what hervey says...

Finished complete brake job, had seats covered with DMCTEX rich coorrrinthian leather, drove to non-ethenol station and drove home......sweet. Ready for Dayton trip.

Got 3937 out on the road for the first time since October when Old Man Winter arrived. All in all it went pretty well. The car started right up and idled fine. I got about 10 miles on it I think, but my speedometer didn't want to join in on the fun so I can't really say for sure.

This was also a shakedown drive for a couple projects I had finished. I rebuilt my front calipers over the winter with new seals, pistons, pads and hardware but had not yet tested it out. Thankfully no neighbor's mailboxes were harmed during the test and the brakes felt great. Nice and grabby compared to the not-so-grabby way they were before.

I also finished replacing the orange fuel hoses I had in my car with replacements from DMCMW. Mine weren't in terrible condition as I didn't see any of the Teflon inside disintegrating, but a good proactive thing to remove. There was also a small inline plastic filter on the return side right at the hardline connection which came out. Not sure it was affecting a great deal but needed to come out regardless. No idea why a PO would have put that in there. The new hoses went on pretty well and no leaks were seen.

Towards the end of my 10 mile drive, I stopped in the gas station right near my house to get some fresh gas. I figured from where my gauge was I would need about 25 litres. Everything seemed great until the pump clicked off at about 27 litres and then comes the mass exodus of fuel from under my car all over everywhere. Crap. Thankfully not full out panic for whatever reason and the attendant helped with some of the absorbent dirt stuff for where the fuel spilled.

The pouring stopped and the wet areas were covered in absorbent and we put the car in neutral and pushed it ahead to an open parking spot not covered in fuel/dirt. I got looking in the fuel pump area and see no hose leak evidence, but the top of the pump area under the boot is full of fuel. I soaked it up with paper towels and kept the hood open for a while letting the breeze help evaporate anything else remaining.

What seems to have happened was the fuel pump assembly was not quite down all the way into it's hole and making a good seal. It's surprising how you can think it is pushed down all the way yet it still went down another half inch or so. I figure the gas pump didn't click itself off and that last two litres came back up through the fuel pump boot area and up and over the tank and down around the frame and accumulator hole. Lesson learned on that project with thankfully no tragic ending.

I had seen/smelled a sign that I should have known better to pick up on. Just a few miles before the gas station there is a nice straight away and I gave it some gas and tested the kickdown feature on the auto trans. I also gave my brakes a good test and pressed them fairly firmly. After the stop sign I could smell a faint bit of gas and normally I have never smelled gas in the cabin while driving. What this likely was was sloshed fuel that came forward when I was braking hard and came up and out a bit at the fuel pump seal. So the warning was there and I didn't act on it. Much like other stuff you see or hear that isn't normal. Best advice sounds like you figure out what caused what you noticed before you find out the hard way.

Oh, and in terms of the stupid DeLorean comments thought... as you can guess, at least 10 different people come rolling by to stare at the car or take photos but it wasn't until about the 5th person that someone finally asked if I needed help. None of the others did. Well, other than the grubby old man inside when I was talking to the attendant that asked if I was in looking for a match. Nice one. Yea, don't help the guy, instead get a cool photo for Instagram instead.

You can guess who did help though. Thanks a lot to Dave S. who replied back right away to my somewhat panicked email asking for advice. Happy Easter to you and your family. :)

With the show season here and like must I like to show the D with the doors open. And we all know how people just jump in. I made this cross beam out of 3/4" pvc pipe primed it gray and cut it to about 40". To affix it I just place one side over a door pin and slightly bow it a bit and slip over the other door pin.

Good-looking solution!

I click the seatbelts in place as if you were seated in the car. Most people don't sit ON the seatbelt when they see it is clicked in place.

Pulled my inner seals to remove about a 1/4 inch of headliner fabric on both left and right sides that was wicking up water and giving me a shower inside.

AH, thank's for the reminder. Have to do the same on mine soon. Not that i got wet yet, but Toby (DMC NW) already said that these fibers are excellent water conductors.

They sure are! I haven't tested my fix yet to determine if I'm 100% dry, but it has to have helped.
