Last weekend I removed my old steering rack...

Whilst out this gave me the opportunity to investigate a hairline crack and slight stain in the epoxy on the front frame extension I've been concerned about - the outcome was pretty obvious...

Started prepping the car for DCS Show and Drive. I bought a 12 volt jump starter. I got a little more than I need as I live in florida and this will keep the cell phones charged for several weeks :)

Opened a drawer in my home office today and found these. It's only been 2 years since I bought them. I think it really ads to the car.

I really like the SS letters too.... Besides looking great I think it also makes the car much easier to identify compared to the plain black molded lettering. The benefit being that it reduces the distance at which tailgaiters need to follow as they try and figure out just what the heck kind of car is in front of them.

Checked my gas mileage for the first time today. Half a tank of gas consumed in primarily city and suburban traffic. The result was 19 mpg. Just like the sticker says.

Does it count if the work was done at DMCMW?
Sent it there for one thing and one thing only. Transmission governor replacement. Here is what she left with:
New master cylinder
Checked high idle and smoke, was a bad O2 sensor, replaced and adjusted fuel mixture idle
Replaced both window switches (to check if drivers motor was bad)
Replaced drivers window motor
Discovered passenger motor was off track, reglued
Converted pull straps to later style
Bought glove box latch, rear catch assembly
Scope creep was pretty evident here :shhh:
Arranged transport from DMCMW to San Antonio. Expensive day.

Getting 48F vent temps with Ultra Duster (r-152a) in my a/c system, which hasn't worked since the mid '80's. Didn't replace a single system component other than the compressor oil and refrigerant. No leaks and the compressor appears to be working quite well. I admittedly fudged the charging process as I wasn't used to working with the hose fittings - if you tightened the fittings (even just hand tight), the schrader valve depressors within the fittings would completely block flow to the hose, thus requiring me to find a 'happy spot' in-between loose and hand tight in order to properly charge the system through my manifold gauge set, during which experimentation, some refrigerant was lost to atmosphere and some air was probably introduced into the system, unfortunately.
But all things considered, together with the fact that I've never done a/c work before in my life, I'm actually quite pleased with the results.
Dialing in the low pressure switch would probably also help performance/efficiency, but I'm confident that on a second go round, and applying the knowledge gained in the mistakes I made, I should be able to see vent temps in the high 30's using Ultra Duster.
And the best part is that I can evacuate the refrigerant to atmosphere without a guilty conscience and try again for less than $7 - try that with r-12, r-134a, or even a 12a product (more expensive).
Ultra Duster is my refrigerant of choice - highly recommended!
Now to re-track the driver's side window - again.... (BTW - it doesn't pull away from the track, it just rolls down too far and completely off the end of the track. Adding a stopper this time around :cool1:

Don't mind at all!
I utilized blue painter's tape to cover the lenses, and I used an exacto knife to trim around the lenses and get rid of the tape that covered the black bezel.
Next, I used isopropyl alcohol and a paper towel to wipe off dirt and grime. Then, I used medium level steel wool to lightly sand the black bezel. I then cleaned it one more time with isopropyl alcohol.
From there, I utilized SEM trim black paint and gave the tail lights about 3 layers of paint - 20 minutes apart. Finally, I let them air dry for 2 nights to make sure the paint cured.
They came out darn well, and I am very pleased with them, considering some parts were actually starting to fade to white they were so old/worn out. Beats $150 a side for new ones.

My friend Dave helped me to install my new set of Sylvana Headlights (low and high be a,) and my driver's side inner door seal. What wonders a rubber mallet can do.
Now my door ajar light goes on shortly after driving. The door seal is still pushing the door away. The door ajar light in the dash, which is actually a LED, is first dim. I have never seen a LED be only dim.
However, I hope that this will go away once the seals settled.

Did you check that the door sensors are wiring are still solidly fixed? Perhaps the mounting screw did come undone or perhaps a bad connection...

The mallet may have jarred something loose but I think the new seals are just keeping the door a tad further out than before.
Volker - a piece of black crafts foam in top of the black plastic contact plate on the door should be sufficient to make enough contact with the switch.

Yes, they were. I tok the plug off so my door lights will stay off during driving. They are LEDs, so nothing to worry, but still.
The new seal is still not perfectly settled and the distance between the switch and door increased so it seems to get a contact. It is fine when I slam the door shut but starts after a few meters driving over uneven surfaces.
I will add something to the door until the seal settles. Than should temporarily fix it. I would like to go for a magnetic option like Dave McKeen has, but I still have to find some DIY instructions for that. I do not want to re-invent the wheel here.
Thanks for the tip though!

You mentioned the warning light is dim, but not as bright as it normally would be.
My warning light flickered a number of times, but wasn't coming on all the time as I was getting to DCS on Thursday. When I was leaving on Sunday, it had started to come on and stay on.
I had assumed it was the driver's side as it's the only one really getting much use, but it turned out it was the passenger side. I have the vacuum caps on the end of my plungers to add some length and what had happened was the cap itself was pushed on to the end of the plunger, but not all the way in order to find this sweet spot to engage the switch. Over time it worked it's way down further onto the plunger.
I think it was still at an okay length for the door to push on it, but since it was now butting against the fiberglass surface around the switch, it couldn't push the switch in at all. I wiggled the vacuum cap out a few millimeters and it was back working fine as the switch could slide in and out again.
Wasn't sure if that was what was happening on your car, but I thought I would mention it. My solution will be to put tiny something in the cap and then put it on so it has something inside to block it from wiggling itself down too far.

Not really doen anything yet but I want to share with all of you that I received a pair of TOBY's TABS from my fellow forum buddy Conundrum.
I could not wait opening the parcel. Toby Peterson told me the story about these TABs himself on my recent visit to DMC NW and it is an amazing story. These bolts have been produced aside of a line of bolts responsible to hold the engines of a Boeing airplane on its wings. They are from amazing strength and will most likely outlast the lifetime of the car (one day in a distant future somebody on a digging site will dig out a few of these TABs and wonder what they belonged to).
I would not have thought that I will one day hold them in my hands. Well, thanks to Conundrum, it happened.
You can imagine that a halo appeared above them when I opened the package and a small chior of angels sung in perfect tune the standard, slightly whispered "Ahaaaaaaaaaaaaaa". I held them up in the air like Link would hold a new item up in any Zelda game, and I was waiting for the standard Zelda chime.
And there I was, wondering how two bolts can make a man happy. I have planned to get Toby or his mechanic John to put them in for me one day in the future because I read several times that it is super hard to get in on an automatic, but I do not have a date for that yet. Just having them makes me happy for now. Knowing that the only time I have to replace TABs on my automatic will be the last in the lifetime of the car.
Thank you Matt (Conundrum)! :thumbup2:

i stopped using my expensive ratchets on stuck nuts or bolts. These tools are made to yield to the bolt, to stop you from destroying the bolt. I just use a good solid spanner and hit it the bolt with a hammer (after soaking the bo,t), to break it. THEN i switch over to my ratchet spanner.

Was working on some odds and ends on the car after getting home from DCS.
One of those was my driver's mirror which has been loose for a while now. Not the black housing, but the glass itself.
Rich showed me how easy it was to carefully pry back the glass and release it from the adhesive. Using a popsicle stick or something else wood to wiggle in between so not to scratch.
What I found was that a replacement glass had been literally double sided taped right on top of the smashed one!! Over time it had started to get loose as bits and pieces of the original mirror glass were crumbling away.
The replacement is fine, but I'm not sure how to get about 60% of the surface area freed up and separated (tape in between) and not crack the good one. Anyone got an idea?
I see replacements are only about $12 on the store webpage, so that's good. Has anyone ever bought a replacement glass piece at a local auto store, and if so, what make and model was close enough to fit?

Last week I finally got my new steering rack installed. Ran into a few hassles but got her back together again within an hour of heading away with it for the weekend.
http://dmctalk.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=28415&d=1403180239
This trip away was also significant in two ways. I always cover her at night when I take the D away, using an aftermarket cover - but it's cotton and leaves tiny bits of stuff all over the car. I've now bought the DMCH cover and it is an absolute piece of art - beautiful to touch, fits like a glove, and a feature I've never heard mentioned... a security lock to prevent it being taken off the car. Didn't think to take a photo of it on though.
The other significant event was my four year old daughter - she's been idolising the DeLorean and the work I've done to it for more than two years. She loves to sit in it, is always checking what I'm doing to it (both when I'm present and when I'm not), and always talking about it. With restoration work now at a point where I am happy for her life to be in it and a dilemma with our long weekend away (with friends in a town called Victor Harbor/Encounter Bay, but I needed to came back separately with my daughter for a kids party on the Sunday) the time came to drive her in the DeLorean. It's been five days and both the holiday and the party she had been raving about for weeks is entirely forgotten - all she talks about is her hour drive in the DeLorean :) :) :)

+1 on how really amazing those photos of your daughter are Chris. The first one where she is on tippy toes is just perfect.
It made me think of a drawing a friend and member of our Ontario club did. He does this sort of thing for a living, so my intent is to respect his rights to the image. He is really talented from all the examples of his I have seen.
The one I attached here he called "Timeless Fascination." I thought it was somewhat similar to the first photo of yours and with your permission, I'll give Grant the link to this image of yours and ask him if it might be something he would want to sketch. It could end up with a neat title related to your daughter's fascination with Daddy's car, or something like that. Let me know and I'll get in touch with Grant for you.

I finished a refurb job on 712's louvers... I took on the process really, really slow... and not a rush job... here were my steps...
1) Top to bottom, wet sand with 3M 3000 grit. (I highly recommend only 3M products) 2) Degrease top to bottom with Dawn dish soap. (3) With a #2 pencil, circle each nic and scratch and tally the total amount and circle it on the fin. 4) Use Icing #26006 Polyester Finishing Putty (from Summit Racing Online) to fill in the scratches and or nics, pin holes, etc. 5) Sand down the Icing Polyester with 320 grit sand paper (wrap the 320 grit paper around a wood paint mix stick)... sand down each filling and block sand it down carefully and slowly no rush. 6) Repeat step 1 above. 7) Repeat step 2 above. 8) Let is fully dry in the sun. 9) Used paint SEM 39143 (from Summit Racing Online). 10) One complete coat of SEM 39141 top to bottom. 11) Repeat step 1. 12) Dry in the sun. 13) 2nd coat of SEM 39141 repeated 14) Wet sand with 3M 4000 grit lightly and be careful with the edges and pretape them! 15) Rinse and dry.
Used a total of 2 SEM 39143 Trim Black spray cans in all and coated it twice.

This morning I started on my carpet overhaul. I've had my carpet set in the attic since spring of 2010. I was worried the mice had gotten to it since it was sitting so long, but all was well. What wasn't well was the kit itself. I'm kind of disappointed in the fit of this set from DMCH. Every piece in this set seems off. Most pieces are big and sloppy and do not fit where they are intended to go. I'm just finishing the rear parcel shelf area but so far the wheel well covers seem way too big, and the carpet that lays on top of the wooden panels is way too long so it bunches up in the middle and won't lay flat. I can't trim the edges to make it fit since the edges have the black finished piping on the sides which looks rather nice so I don't wanna lose that part of it. The vertical piece that has the cubby hole door cut out is actually short. I have pulled and stretched it across the car as much as I can and I'm still 1/2" short of where it needs to be. And then there is the cubby storage area. #1 the guy who cut the hole for the door must have used a weed whacker and unfortunately he cut away too much across the top at a real goofy angle so my Dynamat is showing. Nothing I can do to fix it. #2 The small piece inside the cubby hole was made too small. I tried to force it into position and it wouldn't go. I ended up cutting and splicing it in 2 places so everything lay where it needed to be. Wow... what a great feeling spending $700 on this stuff....
I did however reunite my cargo net with the inside of my car again. It has been 7 years but they are finally back together again!!!

My blinker sorta quit blinking on the way to DCS14. I noticed that it came and went based on speed, clutch engagement, brakes and wiggling the wires. Removed the module, removed the module cover and noticed the negative terminal looked like the solder was no longer adhered. So I reflowed the solder and it blinks like new. I like these kind of fixes!

Fitted new ignition coil at the weekend. Took the time to clean the coil compartment. Took the engine cover off at the same time to treat a bit of rust on the engine cover prop bar.
Treated some spots of flaking epoxy and underlying surface rust (A war I'll never win in Scotland, sadly).
Started on replacing my engine mounts. Got the main studs out either side, but lifting up the car via the oil pan lifts the entire thing. Need to find a good way to loosen the bolts into the frame...

Installed new louve struts and a hood cover catch, which didnt work because it was too big. I removed it, bent it a little using some force and a breaker bar, and I now have an engine cover that will stay up. So, the climax? I dropped a damn 7mm wrench into the engine and I cant find it. I did find 2 bolts, a loose ground wire, and a part about the size of a fuel filter just hanging in the back of the engine bay, left side. It looks like a small cylinder with a white nipple on top, rubber hoses coming out of it,
Phone was dead so I couldnt get a pic, but I will post soon.

The part that you're describing sounds like the vacuum solenoid for the distributor's vacuum advance. It's supposed to be mounted off the back of the mixture unit, just behind the fuel distributor. It looks like this:

That's your vacuum advance solenoid. It should be attached to the back of the engine right behind the fuel distributor. Should be a wire going to it as well. If you get it hooked back up the car will run quite a bit better. Right now you have vacuum advance all the time, which will cause a fast idle at least or a bad idle depending on how things are set up.

Today and the last few days... been figuring out a high idle I've had of late.
Over the past week when I start it up it has been spiking to 1,800 RPM or so and staying there. Unlike many times before, snapping the gas wasn't helping it come back down. So starts the troubleshooting.
Throttle spool cleaned and lubricated. Spring inside it confirmed to be on tighter notch. Cable ends underneath confirmed not to be binding. Linkage confirmed not to be binding or interfering with underside of bracket. Linkage length adjusted.
Idle microswitch screws adjusted to engage properly. Microswitch itself disconnected and tested for resistance/functionality. Diode near idle ECU checked for proper current flow (in one direction and not in the other) and good connectors. Unplugging ECU connector while running test done, inconclusive.
Bulkhead connector for idle speed cleaned and confirmed good. Same for coil and ballast resistor connections.
Two air hose splits/leaks corrected, one on larger diameter hose from air box to oil filler and the other on the smaller hose from oil filler to lower port on cold start valve.
Test for checking if decal valves are bad done, not indicating they are the problem.
Removed hose between cold start valve and idle speed motor while motor still installed to test operation and see if moving parts are moving or not. They weren't. Not well anyway and only making it about halfway open/closed.
Removed motor and put on workbench for cleaning. Not convinced I got it clean enough as upon reinstall it changed nothing (still idling high and still not moving much when peering in through opening... while key to run but engine off).
Tested motor as per other thread and K-Jet troubleshooting write-up and the resistance comes in lower (10 and 20 Ohms across pins when test says it should be 20 and 40). Plan to clean again, several times if necessary to try to get it to go. Otherwise I'll likely need to buy a new one (webstore shows core is required so not sure how that is going to work).
In the meantime, noticed my A/C belt was sloppy loose (A/C Freon not charged anyway). Took it off to see a couple spots had been thinned along the sides. Pulley closest to tensioner bolt is not rotating symmetrically. Likely needs replacing.
Got the tiny tweezers out and returned the little rubber spacers under the windshield front grating screws back to where they should be.
That's it!!

No, but I will if you give me a hint at how. Would this bypass then be telling me if that is the faulty part? Or some other piece of information to learn?

Bypassing the thermistor simply results in the idle air motor (CIS) following pre-set instructions from the ECU, as opposed to allowing for dynamic operation of such (not sure if it's a timed operation or something else entirely, but it's something like that).
Doing so allows you to eliminate the thermistor as being the cause of the problem, or positively identifying it as causing the problem. If the thermistor is stuck and not reacting to engine temperature, it will result in a higher idle speed.
When you visually inspect the CIS upon start-up, does it appear fully open? If not, at about what level of openness would you say it's sitting at?
DeLorean03
06-26-2014, 06:50 AM
No, but I will if you give me a hint at how. Would this bypass then be telling me if that is the faulty part? Or some other piece of information to learn?
The wiring that goes to the idle speed ECU should have small slits of insulation already shaved off. Get a jumper wire lead that has an alligator clip on each side. Put one clip on the black/slate wire and the other on the black/yellow wire (on the bare wire - not the insulation). You've now bypassed the idle speed thermistor by utilizing a short as current follows the path of least resistance (resistance in a bare wire = zero).
If your idle drops, now you know the thermistor is bad.

It could be as simple as the connector coming off the thermistor. You can put it back on without delving into the valley of death if you know what you are feeling for.
One test is to check the resistance between the Idle Speed Controller and the engine through the thermistor. If it shows open then you have a bad wire or connector off the thermistor spade. I don't recall the numbers but somewhere it is documented what the resistance should be with a car at ambient (cold) and what it should be when at operating temperatures (hot).

Good tips!
But so others know, Jonathan has already successfully ID'd his problem as being with the thermistor (probably the connection as opposed to a failure of the unit itself).

Did some more work on 1168 today, Re installed a repaired left quarter panel.
Awoke her from 15 years of hibernation. Cleaned the fuel tank, pump, flushed the lines and fuel distributor with fresh gas. Gave it a once over. Gave the car its FIRST ever oil change at 3200 miles, How many people can say they gave a Delorean's first oil change these days? :headbang:
Started up great. Now to rebuild the brake system and it might be drive-able.

Well done! That is unbelievable to think it had factory oil still in it. I would think even those that kept the car as a garage queen would do an annual change. Looking forward to hearing about the first test drive!

I figured you'd check in on this one. Any luck reclaiming Irish tire air yet?
I've drained the original orange brake fluid out of a car or two.
I don't believe it's still available but ATE used to make orange and blue DOT4 brake fluid, so that racers could alternate and tell when the flush was done. (Its not unusual to change the fluid at every race in case it boiled). It seems that the original DMC fluid was orange as you mentioned.

You know me too well
No luck on finding any 33 year old Northern Irish tire air... yet.
I've got pics of my car when I first bought it that shows the orange brake/clutch fluid (I was very thorough when evaluating the cars that I was considering to purchase).
I tried to source some new orange DOT4 fluid (for my brakes), after you gave my memory a kick, prior to DCS, but without any success. Seems that in their infinite wisdom, big daddy federal government banned colored brake fluids from being sold here in the US...
http://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/49/571.116
S5.1.14 Fluid color. Brake fluid and hydraulic system mineral oil shall be of the color indicated:
DOT 3, DOT 4, and DOT 5.1 non-SBBF—colorless to amber.
DOT 5 SBBF—purple.
Hydraulic system mineral oil—green.
Took the federal government 15 years to realize that ATE was breaking the law, but eventually they did, and unfortunately shut down the non-conforming colored brake fluids.

Went to get the car inspected. Failed due to brakes, brake light, and tires. They said the pedal was too squishy, so it didnt have the 2" of clearance required for Texas. I then discovered that I had a leak in a line, so they jacked up the car and while it was up, they replaced both rear lines with stainless. We then discovered that the front hubs were loose....I forgot to put the spacers in when I redid the calipers and hubs..... I went home and they put them on.
Due to my stupidity, the back side of the rotors got scratched up, so they turned those. All in all, it was a $600 screw up.
Put on both front spacers
Replaced 2 rear brake lines
Turned all 4 rotors
Re-bled brake system

Car sure does drive a lot better when the front hubs arent wobbling all over the place....
Got home, repaired the brake lights and ordered tires.

We're all entitled to our 'derp' moments - but it does suck when they end up costing you.
Nice job on the low cost taillight repair though - gotta feel good about that
The important thing is that you're trying, which not everyone can say.
Nice job on scoring a set of the CS4's - those are a nice tire which I'm sure you'll enjoy (and since they've been discontinued, somewhat difficult to find in certain parts of the country).

I flushed the AC system, pumped it down for a couple hours (yep, first nap in years and I did it right), charged with 6.5 ounces of ester oil, and 3 14oz cans of R134a from AutoZone. I also stuffed some of those blue paper towels in the vent tubes going to the door as a temporary solution to get more air coming out the middle.
I managed to rig up one of my vacuum pumps, a Welch Duo-Vac 1400 to a R134a can tap adapter so I didn't need to buy yet another pump. I'm a vacuum hobbiest and have about 9 different pumps now and really didn't want to buy another. Turns out the adapters are almost impossible to find but what I did worked fine.

Also, be careful how you open up your system. I can deal with the oil that went everywhere. I really can. It's the damn UV leak detector dye that really sucks. It went everywhere.

Replaced unknown GM looking alternator and tension arm extension with Hervey's D120 because of an excessively worn belt. I won the alternator at the DMA raffle before I even bought the car so this was a welcome coincidence.
Adjusted idle mixture and microswitch screws to run about an 8-9K idle to prevent very seldom but once at an intersection stalling. I discovered these screws were way off to begin with.

Let some smoke out of the wires in the compartment behind the passenger seat. Received the digital amp/Volt instrument today so I'll be doing some troubleshooting with it next week. I suspect it is related to the #7 fuse running very hot. I never get board with having a DeLorean :reading:

Had a great Canada Day off and decided to work on my cars. First did some work on the camper van (I have to or the misses is getting grumpy and says that I prefer to work on the DeLorean now and abandon the camper van...so NOT true!).
Then moved on to take care of a few things for #3922.
Set up my workplace in the garage with the radio blaring from the camper ( = awesome!).
28662286612865928661
Replaced my broken lens socket for the passenger side indicator on the front (I broke it the first time I wanted to replace the bulbs because I did not know that you have to turn the socket in the lens to release it. The side marker was solo different and I had to simply pull and listen to the "crack" of one of the fasteners...READ the damn manual FIRST!).
Replaced the bulbs with LEDs (2x 1157 High Power Cree Amber Yellow Brake/Stop/Tail/Turn Signal LED Light Bulbs from eBay) I ordered after discussing the issue on another thread on the blog. Awesome LEDs that I got now! They are bright enough for marker and indicator light.
Tested the front driver's side speaker on the passenger side and finally determined that I blew my AMP in the CRAIG after pushing too much volume into the just installed AUX in with my bluetooth dongle. Radio will go to the repair shop this week.
Unwrapped my new JBL GTO 328 speakers for the front and tried to fit them. I will have to bend the latches on the side. I saw a picture of this on the forum. Something to investigate.
Did a second "Binnacle Day" because my replaced trip reset did not reset the trip meter.
2865828660
It was setting it to 555 or 666 or 777. I called it the slot machine effect (I would have been solo lucky in Vegas). I greased it a bit up and tested it again. It is working if you push gently and just enough to get 0000 to the front. Getting it out and in was a bit of a pain (Did not have enough hands for washer, nut and ratchet! But worked it out).
Removed center console and radio for service. Checked (while I am in there) the clock and reseated everything. Seems to work now (it worked on and off. Not sure why. Had to tip it with the finger to get it work sometimes. Will monitor).
Left the car in a desolated state with the center console removed and wrapped up for the day. Will install the remote trunk release from DeloreanParts NW before putting the center console back in next time.
Well, that's for the day. Pretty happy how it worked out so far.

Forgot to mention that my heart stopped for a few minutes (that's how it felt) when I disassembled the binnacle to get to the trip reset shaft. I removed the two screws with rubber washers holding the speedometer, thinking that they are held by a bit more than the screws, which was a big mistake. What happened next felt as running in extremely slow motion. The speedometer fell to the floor of the camper van from its home in the cluster, which was lying on my knees. It bounced a few times while gaining momentum as it was hitting edges of the speedometer and started to spin in the air. It bounced twice before leaving the camper and hitting the tarmac in front of the garage. Remember: it still had delicate items like the recently installed trip reset shaft and the speedometer needle still attached! My heart stopped during the long fall and I slapped myself in my head while screeming "Noooooooooooooooooooo!" and "YOU IDIOT!" (also in my head). I picked it up and it was fine. All bits still attached and not cracked or broken. I was EXTREMELY lucky!!
Man, sometimes I think that I am too clumsy for this car! :frantic:

Mine would drive but is in pieces awaiting the fixed radio and some more attention. My insurance ran out while I was waiting for the insurance company to get back to me about collector status plates (wayyyy cheaper). They did and told me that I am not paying enough for my camper van insurance to give me the collector discount (suckers!). I had to increase my camper van premium to get the discounted plates for the DeLorean. I have driven the car about 3 weeks ago for the last time. I am looking forward to get my plates because weather improved and I cannot wait to drive it again!

It is very easy, IF your window rails are properly aligned. It took me 10 minutes to get the motors in. 3 days to get them working properly. At least it explained why the original motors got damaged.

You think?? I was pondering on this last night and wondered if it was more just the poor design of the Bosch OE ones where the plastic gear set was not very well mounted to the motor assembly? Or could be both as well!

Both. First the motors went out (bad design!), then when I replaced the motors the windows ran off track (bad alignment). Entirely depends on the car though, on some cars the window tracks are fine, it's just the Bosch motors being bad. :cool1:

Got it smogged. I am always floored by how well it does. In California, the emissions testing is graded on a sliding scale - so a newer car is held to much stricter standards than an older one. I smogged my 2006 Acura today as well - #2100 would have passed even by the standards my 2006 is judged by. All but the 15 MPH NO reading, the D was about 100 PPM too high to pass that by 2006 standards.

Did the same thing to my car a few months ago. I now converted all lights on the car (except auto shifter bulb, battery and, of course, headlights) to LED and I love the less strain on the battery and all involved relays. I even left the doors open on a car show and I got countless people walking over telling me that the lights are on. I had no significatn impact on the battery and the car started up fine after a long day of doors open with LEDs on.
I think LEDs are a must for older cars. I also did a complete conversion of my 1990 VW camper van and I love these superbrightLED LEDs and their minimal power drain. :yesss:

Fitted new double lip seals to the transaxle. Unfortunately I forgot to mark the flange positions so I need to figure out the correct orientation when putting it back together tonight...
Also need to figure out how to replace the lip seal on the shift mechanism, as it's the other oil leak from the box.
The flange is oriented such that you can re-install the split pin - pretty simple
Best luck with replacing the shift mech bellows - I'm curious to know how you'd do it. :confused0:

Yeah, once I was under there and re-fitting it it was simple. I just got a little worried since I looked at some of the How-To's after starting and they all mentioned marking the flange for re-installation. Which reminds me; Your How-To was very useful reference, so thanks!
As for the shift mech bellows, I've ended up leaving that for now. Got to have the car running the next two weekends and then for a week long road trip after that, so don't want to cock it up now when I'm so close and the bellows only really dribbles oil. Though when I do I'll take plenty of pictures and put together some instructions!

I got my glovebox light bulb and switch installed. Which you'd think would be pretty simple, right? Yikes...
I put a replacement glovebox insert in about 5 years ago. My original was cracked and faded and needed replacing. There also was no light bulb holder nor switch. So I ordered all of the pieces I was missing.
I got the original insert out and actually realized the switch was there, but had just fallen down out of sight. Cool. The bulb worked when I test plugged it in.
They didn't fit in the replacement fiberglass insert though. Basically the holes were too small (light bulb hole not quite larger enough circle, switch hole not big enough in either direction). So I left it as is and thought I would do it later.
5 years later...
I took out the insert... and the glovebox lid, latch, kneepad, A/C duct, etc. Good chance to clean-up behind there and rethread in a couple of the kneepad bolts which had backed out.
I dremelled the two holes in the fiberglass bigger and they fit better now. The bulb was simple (just a bigger circle) and the rectangular hole for the switch wasn't too hard to enlarge, but the shape of the insert below the switch isn't contoured quite right to let the wire connectors sit flush. The insert doesn't exactly give you much slack to bend things a bit to get them in place.
I guess my patience/temper with this car is getting better 'cause I stayed calm enough/took enough breaks when needed to get it all in without smashing/snapping anything. :) Had the chance to zip tie the wiring underneath a little better and out of the way. I didn't put the duct clamps back on as there were no holes drilled into the bottom of the insert for the clamps and without knowing where they should go in advance, was not in the mood to guess and/or wreck anything trying to drill into it as it sits (and wasn't about to take it all out again).
So that was it. All that to get a little light to come on. Brian Johnson's shop class teacher would be proud of me. :)
(Anyone know of an LED that can go into that glovebox light by chance?)

Jonathan,
My entire assembly is out right now also. One thing I cant figure out, how the heck does that little torsion bar work?
Funny you should ask... Mine popped out while I was in the midst of getting it installed/klonking my head on the inside of the windshield. So figured it out I did :)
http://store.delorean.com/p-9804-torsion-bar.aspx
Not a great photo, mostly because it's facing the wrong way. Spin this photo around in your mind so that the narrow loop end is on the left and the wider hooked end is on the right.
Think of it sitting horizontally now. Narrow end up on the left and wider hook end on the right pointed down.
Now have your glovebox lid laying flat there too, with the hinges installed onto it (but not yet installed into the car).
The narrow end on the left pokes up into the hole in the glovebox. Not sure how exactly it is connected in there, mine didn't come right out from there so I didn't have to find out.
The main length of the "torsion bar" sits across the lower edge of the glovebox and then the wider hook end on the right (and this is the important part), will tuck behind the lower portion of the right hinge and get "pinched" behind it once you tighten it against the glovebox insert. You need to sneak it through the middle of the hinge, so the bar coming from the left is on the front of the hinge, and the lower portion is now behind the hinge.
So it basically won't make any sense if you're trying to figure out how it works with it in your hands or on the workbench. It needs to have something to push against, and that ends up being the surface of the inside of the glovebox as you install it.
What you'll then see is that as it is tight and the lid is up, there is minimal tension on the bar. Yet when you close the lid, you are pushing against the bar and in effect, it wants to open. Much like how our doors work :)
Hope that helps.

Watch out for these if you have Dave M's dome light mod installed. Some of the LEDs out there play absolute havoc with his programming mode, since it relies on that lamp. I had a really bad time with exactly that issue. I think he said he was thinking of upgrading the design to compensate for this but don't know where that went.
As for me, I moved my car around so I could have the garage to work on my DD. Cold start issue is gone since fiddling with the pins in the CSV connector.

It is the LEDs with a switching regulator that can not be used with my dome unit. Maybe some very low current LEDs may not draw enough current in that glove box location also. Ozzie sent me an LED bulb that he uses and I now use in my glove box and it works with my dome unit fine.
The problem with switching regulators on LEDs are they have a capacitor that keeps supplying current to the LED after shutting off the power (for a very short time). My dome unit interrupts the power for a very short time to test if the lights are still switched on. Since it still sees current draw it can not tell if it is on or off.
I do plan to try to measure current with an analog current check on a new design someday. That would let you use the switching regulator LEDs in all locations except the dome lights. You can not dim with PWM an LED with a switching regulator since your turning power off and on very quickly but that capacitor still keeps the LEDs lit at full power.

I removed both front Craig speakers in anticipation of my new Polk coming in today. Also, finally managed to get the lower ujoint removed from the pinion. Tie rod ends coming into today, hopefully my schrader valves, speakers, and I can start putting this thing back together.
I did do a number on the black insert of my binnacle. I spilled a little glue on it, so I took some alcohol to clean it, but everywhere i touched turned grey :banghead:
I imagine I will grab some Back to Black and try to fix it.

Now that my centre console was off:
1. pulled a cable for the remote trunk release from trunk to relay compartment
2. added 5V USB charger to ground and radio automatic antenna line to enable it whenever the radio will get turned on
3. put CRAIG radio back, which now has an AUX in (a better one than the one I put in: radio is switched off if a device is connected)
4. added Miccus RX bluetooth dongle to it and attached it to USB and AUX (bluetooth dongle will switch on whenever it gets power, which it now does when the radio is getting turned on
Closed everything off again and installed the centre console again.
Found out that the octopus from the AC selector must have sled off when I put the radio in. It was hissing like crazy.
Took everything apart again and re-attached the octopus.
Working again, but the dongle did not turn on. Wiggled ground a bit and it started working again. Sometimes I think that the car is holding together with bubblegum and scotch tape.
Did a short ride around the block up to Burnaby Mountain. It got really hot inside! I have to get my AC fixed/converted or recharged!

Today I had a problem that I'd read about and hadn't addressed yet.
Namely, after a lot of running around, (and getting some Great new Vape juice), I went grocery shopping and when I tried to open the trunk, The lever just said Nope, can't do that.
I got under the dash a bit ago to find the cause, (and because of a few threads I'd read recently), I also investigated a few other things.
I searched for my Inertia switch to see if it had a paint dot on it. I found it Under the carpet flap. Check.
I also checked my Lamba counter(?) for Green dots. Check.
My main question is, What is this thing under the counter? It has a date of June 2012.

Now that's very interesting. That's either part of or surrounding/integrated with your lower speedo cable. Never seen a connector end like that. Is there any kind of cruise control or power steering or anything in your car that take electrically generated speed input?
Maybe it's just a manufacture date for a speedo cable, but again I haven't seen one that looks like that.

Interesting; do you have any idea how many pulses per mile this is? I don't have a VSS installed with my engine, however; I'm thinking of trying to map the power band more precisely in the future, but to do so the engine needs to know how fast the car is going. I've been planning to use one of the GPS speed sensors but I'm intrigues by this.

Yes, there actually is a website (http://1561project.com/?page=ipod-craig). I did this first and it worked fine. I thought that I had blown my amp when pumping the full volume of my phone into it but it was only the balance not set correctly. But the shop that was looking into it specialized in putting AUX in into old car stereos and they have a better fix whereby they disable the radio wham a source is getting connected. I therefore asked them to remove my AUX and put their solution in. But the one from the website works just fine. Not as elegant, but fine.

For the first time since DCS I drove the car. I had to go to the dentist and figured I may as well have some pleasure out of the trip. The car started right up and had no problems. It reinforced one thing. I bought a DMC Houston A/C vent plug for the passenger side at DCS. When I first put it on at DCS I could feel a little air leaking around it. I then put a rolled up pair of socks behind it and put the plug back in. I didn't notice much difference, I left at 0400 and it was so cool driving home I didn't use the air much. Through Georgia it was cloudy and I didn't hit Florida till evening. That's a long story to say I haven't used the air much. Today was a 98 degree and Humid Day. The AC was a lot better I actually turned it down a notch. If you are not happy with your AC, plug the passenger vent. It made a world of difference in mine. I like to flow on my side of the car.
If you don't mind the rolled up pair of socks showing when you open the door don't worry about it. However if you want a nice clean look http://store.delorean.com/p-10432-ac-vent-plugs-pair.aspx

This resulted in Low voltage on coil (1V) and sometimes cold and hot hard starting.
Lot of troubleshouting for such a litle zero cents fix........:8ball:

Got looking into my brake reservoir area for figuring out an intermittent brake warning light problem and noticed something else.
What appears to be a coolant line from the connection at the top of the radiator on the drivers side going back towards the rear of the car on the passenger side is pretty much just lying there on top of the frame, steering rack area/boots, and backside of the cooling fans. Was it meant to be routed somewhere a little more secured? It's not like that's an area that sees a lot of action or movement, but I was surprised to see how close the edge of the hose is to the back edge of the cooling fan motor on the drivers side. It wouldn't go anywhere so long as both ends are connected, but could be pretty exciting if one end did let go.

Pulled in to drop my wife off at work and suddenly, SPLOOSH! A huge BTTF-worthy cloud of vapor erupted behind us. I immediately shut off the engine and with the help of a bystander we pushed the car into a parking space. The short coolant hose adjacent to the otterstat pipe had developed a hole. A guy at work picked me up. Hot tip: auto parts stores don't have spools of generic radiator hose like they used to. The counter man let me in the back and I rummaged until I found a hose for who-knows-what that I cut to length with my Bowie knife. All fixed now.

Went to DMC NW yesterday and threw a lot of money at #3922. Met Greg from Calgary and his wife. Very nice people. They were picking up parts for his club colleagues and dropping some neat stainless vent plugs for Toby P. to sell. They have either the DMC logo etched into it or the "nuclear" sign. You can illuminate it if you route a LED into the vent. Pretty cool.
Things done:
1. upgrade to Stage I to fix the exhaust manifold gasket leak (gasket was merely a shadow of itself) and to get all the plus when having a Stage I. Man is this thing loud! I could hear and feel the difference on my drive back. I cannot sneak into my driveway without the neighbourhood knowing anymore. It seems to have more power as well as it was pretty responsive on the way back, although the automatic tranny took a bit of the experience away.
2. recharged R12. It is blowing ice cold again. Although I am feeling a bit bad as an environmentalist. :worship:
3. replaced lower coolant hose between automatic transmission and heat exchanger in the coolant line. It started to leak ATF. I had the upper one replaced last time and now this one failed. Darn!
Stage I is fun!

Dyed my dash, binnacle, kneepads, and console using SEM Acura Charcoal along with the SEM vinyl prep and an adhesion promoter. This started with me getting a new binnacle and wanting it to better match the color of the interior. Hard to tell any difference in photos, but the before and after in person are quite striking. The interior looks new again! Next on the list are my doors and rear speaker panels.
Alex's tutorial (http://delorean6575revisited.blogspot.com/2013/04/stripping-interior-and-removing-dash.html) was a huge help in this project. Thanks Alex!
Before:
29183
After:
29184
A few in process shots:
Everything out
29186
Discovered that my passenger knee pad was originally black! Surprise!
29187
Old dye removed, showing sunburned dash.
29185
Now the most frustrating part of the whole project. After re-installing nearly everything, I realized I should have test fitted the binnacle immediately after installing the dash. The dash was just a hair too far back to allow room for the binnacle. EVERYTHING had to come out again to get it to fit properly. That added/wasted 6+ hours. AHHH!!!!!

Looks great! Are you going to tackle the A-pillars, rear trim and door panels too?

Thanks! Yes, took me a full Sunday and about 5 weeknights to get done. Probably about 25 hours of work. But I work slower than most people I think.

Rear trim and door panels for sure, but probably not for a few weeks. I need a break from car work for a little while after this project. A-pillars don't look bad in my opinion, a near match to the new dye. Depends on how much trouble I find they are to remove.

Based on your VIN they may not be removable without taking out the windshield, so you may have wanted to do them while everything was out... or you could just mask the new stuff off and do them in place.

I thought about that. Masking it off while everything was out. I probably should have. I was just ready to be done with the project at that point. I'll come back to things in a few weeks and be excited about it again. I figure I'll do a better job anyway when I'm not burned out on interior work.

Fitted all new silicone hoses and flushed the coolant system... all in advance of doing a 1000+ mile road trip over the next week or so! What's the worst that could happen...
