Drove the D back to work after lunch. Temp gauge stays right below the 1/4 mark. Brakes had not heating problem. When I got home I checked the charging voltage at the jump terminal with engine at idle was 14.4 volts. I will check how much it goes up when it's cold.
Had a guy behind me at a stop sign taking a flash photo of my car.

Temp gauge stays right below the 1/4 mark.
What's your ambient temp there? Do you mean the mark between 100 and 220?
Just wondering if Ed's radiator really makes that huge of a difference :) Mine lives juuuust a hair above that mark, normally not quite enough to fire up the fans. But in the heat lately (91 out right now) it's been sitting more like halfway between that mark and the 220, especially with the Max A/C on.

Nothing has changed, that's where the OEM radiator held. Only thing I would see before if driving in the mountains, then the temp gauge would climb on those long up hill climbs. Yes the line between 100 and 220.

I'm glad to hear you had a great experience with yours being serviced there. I feel like my car is in above average condition but I know of several items that need taken care of. I'm just crossing my fingers that the list from the inspection report doesn't brake my bank and I stlill have money to get the engine upgrade completed. Lol...I'm trying to get the car as right as possible and figured they would be the best people to help me get it that way.

went to a garage to fix what i thought was a serious problem with my left front wheel. Turns out the front drivers side shock dropped through the spring. seems there never was a bushing put on the top of the upper control arm and was missing a top washer. So what I thought was going to be a huge issue ended up just being a 35 buck repair. Phew :)

Over past week I installed upgraded power window motors (now silky smooth and silent), replaced door lock solenoids with Toby's actuators (solenoids were fine so no change, just the assurance I wont have problems), installed door release actuators ready for future (or the past!) security system, and while at it traced and split off the redundant solenoid ground ready for the Wings-A-Loft.
Unfortunately shakedown cruise #16 was a disaster - couldn't get more than a few seconds down the road without stalling, sometimes unable to start again for lengths of time, and while I did manage to limp back into the driveway that was her final death and I couldn't get going again even to enter my garage. During this aborted test I quickly took the rear parcel shelf apart and tried fiddling with the harness where I had done the ground rewiring for above actuators, and did notice I could cause an immediate stall without attempting to drive further down the road/home by wiggling the wires leading to the engine bay. Without touching anything it seemed to happen whenever there was a bump in the road.
Figuring I had disturbed the 31 year old connectors when working with the wiring harness behind the relay compartment, I removed each of the plugs in the engine bay that fed off that rear harness and used a screwdriver to slightly bend each socket in the plugs to make a tighter fit. Had a similar issue with faulty front park/indicators when I disturbed the front harness to rewire my front perimeter lights and doing this to the sockets down there fixed it.
Started straight away, headed back out for shakedown cruise #17, went over the bumpiest streets I could find (not hard in this state!), and couldn't fault her. Phew :)

Put another 280 miles on mine this afternoon, In the process I have a new record for fuel temp: 136'F. At about the same time the cap on the coolant bottle shot off, coolant spiked up to 230' in a parking lot, It was a hell of a coolant geyser shooting out on to the louvers. I sorted that out with some water from the a nearby restaurant, then my angle drive cable bracket that mounts to the brake caliper broke off, Not a good day for 1768.:shameful:

I spent pretty much all weekend, working on my car.
started off by re spraying the dash and glove box.
installed new A-pillar trim.
installed new Alpine stereo, with bluetooth and speakers, memphis audio in rears and infinity in fronts
removed all the carpet and cleaned and power washed all the pieces.
installed one seat cover (other will go on on thurs night)
and also installed half the new headliners. never seen the headliners done how I did it so i wanted to see a D would look with them... suede, not the $160 a yard alcantara that lamborghini and ferrari are using

Went to a cruise night in Davis. Was joined by my wife and Clint with 1768. It was a good time, as always. These cruise-ins are remarkably chill with a good group of regular owners and a mostly respectful and friendly crowd. Plus easy access to great Mexican food afterwards...
Most interesting was the guy who came up to us as we were trying to leave and offered to buy both our cars for cash. I tossed a crazy number out and left, Clint stayed and chatted some more.
Some pics! There were the usual street rods, a really sweet E-type, two Opels that I was fascinated by and many more.

I tried to install new brake pads in the rear. I found that 1 of the 4 pistons is stuck. The passenger outer piston will not move inward enough for me to install the pad. Looks like a rebuild is in order.
Swore at mine for a bit.
Went to reverse out of the garage, and the clutch pedal fell away to the floor. Knackered master/slave cylinder maybe?? There are no leaks in the footwell though.

Master can leak internally, generally if it does that it will squirt out the filler when you hit the pedal if you have the cap off.
Master can leak externally, it runs under the carpet.
The slave can only leak onto the ground.

Wash and dry. Cleaned all the windows and vacuumed the driver's side floor mat. Fresh tank of gas and 20 or so miles of tootling around town. 80 degrees out and with max A/C on full blast, never crept the slightest above the second mark on the temp gauge. It was a good day for 2100.
Question: is 21 MPG about average considering I've been mostly driving around town and mostly with the A/C blasting given the temps? My sender is getting worse and worse and I am trying to make sure I am an ace at interpreting my need for fuel based on the trip odometer.

If you use 220 and 280 as boundaries, depending on the gearbox you have, driving style and surrounding, this will give you an idea when to get ready for a refill.
My manual usually will need a refill around 270-280 Miles, but there are circumstances that I have to fill up sooner.
That's why I always set the tripcounter after eacht refill.

I had about five hours of driving today, mostly 85% interstate and in mountainous regions. A/C was blowing and RPMs were usually between 3500 and 4000. I yielded 23mpg on my auto trans car. 240 miles on the trip odometer and I got 10.7 gallons in the tank. I never feel safe with the flakey sender unit I have, it was flashing like crazy over the hills. Mathematically I guess I should be able to make it to 280 miles before filling up, but I've never tried it. It's been a while since I have been on a road trip with my manual
trans car for comparison. Also, my auto trans usually will get about 19ish on city driving as well.

Braver than I am, I stopped at around 160 miles today as my fuel light was on and gauge showed 0. It only took about 6.5 gallons. Like I said, my sender (the "improved" DMCH one but not the combo unit) is just getting worse and worse....

The past week has been a quiet one on the DeLorean front for me due to the kids - but amongst a few odds and end I did shampoo all the carpets which are looking and smelling brand new :)
With everything for her initial "drive worthy phase" pretty much done I took her out for what i hope is her final shakedown cruise - #18.
Drove for over an hour along main roads, the hills, busy roads, quiet roads, rough roads, smooth roads, fast roads, etc. She was absolutely perfect and is ready for her maiden voyage :)
That extended test session also gave her first decent exposure to the public and I got many a thumbs up, countless phones being pointed through windscreens (photos obviously), two incidents of cars coming alongside and matching speed to shout questions as we drove, one that did same at traffic lights, and three people approach me at the servo - wouldn't want to be in a hurry to go anywhere! :)

Tried again, unsuccessfully, to extract the A/C drain tube from between the fuel tank and frame. I wonder if removing the fuel tank closing plate would let me push the tank down a little bit to loosen things up? Or maybe give me a better way to access the drain tube.

I dunno about just for fun () but one of these days I'll have to address that spot of rust under the brake MC, and we'll have to pull the plate to do that. Maybe a good tank cleaning and a new pump/sender while we're in there. Who knows...everything is fine up there for now though, I just want to stop the passenger side carpet getting wet from the A/C right now! :)

I'd rather have a 4 wheel trailer. That is not an option for my car, it's not rated for the weight catagory. I don't think the tires would fit the front end barely fits. I'd have to measure it.

My drain tube was plugged as well. You might be able to pull the rubber boot that connects the drain to the tube away to clear it (located in the passenger footwell). There isn't much room there. Bill R recommended cutting it away and replacing with a spark plug boot. I haven't done that, but it would certainly make cleaning that area out easier.

Took out the passenger side seat, floor mat, carpeting and front wheel. Climbed in the trunk and tried my damndest to reach that drain tube again. Left the motor idling with the A/C going full blast the whole time. Gave up on the tube and got inside the car again - no moisture at all, anywhere. Looked under the car and there was a decent size puddle of plain water (not the green kind, for once) on the driver's side. Looks like my tube must route over the fuel tank or something and is dripping on the opposite side? Whatever. The carpet is dry and I think I may have been a victim of a much more common and far less exciting water leak in the body somewhere.
I did discover something interesting while on my back under the dashboard. My "motor cooling tube" (elbow shaped rubber tube) has always been just hanging loose, pointing at the passenger's knees. I thought nothing of it and assumed it was for exhaust. Well, actually I thought it was for drainage. This was the first time I was down there with the system running and I realized the air coming out of it was ice cold and the motor was feeling quite hot. Then I noticed a hole in the side of the motor housing, which the open end of the rubber tube fits ever so perfectly into.....
I am going to get a cheap USB inspection camera off eBay and cram it up inside the evap box through the motor opening. Check out the whole thing from inside. I don't think my drain is plugged after all.
DavidProehl
09-25-2012, 08:54 PM
Glad you got your fan motor cooling hose figured out! At least your fan didn't burn up without it. Strange that you never found the source of the water, the car leaks in strange places at times. If I remember correctly there is some panel near the footwell that isn't always sealed properly, but it requires pulling out the evaporator box to get to it. Couldn't give you more details than that and probably isn't worth going after unless you get flooded every time you wash the car or drive in the rain.

I took the car out for the first time in almost two weeks. I went to a custom-exhaust shop to inquire about removing the muffler and cat. conv. and adding resonated tips. I have heard a car with a similar setup and it sounded amazing, so we'll see what price they quote me. I also had to clean up the carpet by the edge of the door, because the guy from the exhaust shop got his muddy boots all over them getting in/out of the car. I also had to go around the back of the shop to show him how to put the car into reverse. I hate letting other people who aren't familiar with the car drive it - makes me really nervous.

Same! Especially after hearing about Steve having his radiator busted because someone at a shop couldn't put it in reverse. Now if I have to take it to a shop, I always put a sticky note by the shifter that says "For Reverse, Lift Shifter Up".

So for JUST the summer of 2012:
Replaced alternator
Fixed the wiring/contact issue on my driver's side rear tail light board (had to clip the turn signal wire and solder it directly to the point of contact on the board, made a quick-disconnect unit so it can be removed from the car).
Fixed the light circuits for the trunk and engine light
Tightened the bulb sockets on the tailight boards so the running and brake lights would stop flickering
Installed factory lugs after 9 years...
Upgraded to the Joe Cool Unit
New rear tires
New steering wheel
Wheel Alignment
Had DMC-MW install (in essence) a new auto transmission, replace the TABs and bushings, install rear shocks, new oil seal where engine and transmission mate, and re-route my auto-trans cooling system to a much cleaner installed look
Installed new SMD LEDs in both doors, license plate lamps, and front markers/turn signals and rear turn signals
Installed new rear wheel bearings
Had DMCH's seat towel covers both repaired and modified/upgraded at an alterations shop.
New floor mats
Installed new side markers - both red and amber
Re-attached both TAB shields
Now about to park mine this week at Ken K's in Cincy for winter storage.
Current projects while in winter storage:
1. Re-attach all trim to both doors,
2. Finish installation of Toby's door actuators
3. Adjust linkage arms in psngr door to get it unstuck,

Drove for over an hour along main roads, the hills, busy roads, quiet roads, rough roads, smooth roads, fast roads, etc. She was absolutely perfect and is ready for her maiden voyage :)
Ended up taking one more quick shakedown a few days ago, #19, just to be absolutely certain of no gremlins - all good though! Have otherwise spent the week shampooing a few more sections of carpet I hadn't done, final dose of leather treatment, etc.
Today was the big day - I took #6679 out for her maiden voyage, a trip to historic Hahndorf where my wife and kids rendezvoused for a great lunch and day. Had an absolute blast!

I apparently missed the spare tire thread earlier. Very cool that an option exists! I recently made sure my spare tire pressure is good, but I'd feel better with fresh rubber. I don't think I'll have it before our drive, but I've added it to my "to order" list.

Nice, I took me a while but I found a unused one from a late 90's toyota at Pick n Pull for $15, If I ever need another, the spare on my Alltrac wagon is the same size and bolt pattern too.
As you know Jon I recently had to actually use mine when my rear tire blew a few weeks back, the car still felt normal but i still took it extra easy and slow on the little guy.

Wired in a $6 wireless remote key unit that I picked up on eBay. I got it working perfectly after some trial and error due to a printing error on the installation manual (perhaps the reason it was $6). I can now unlock/lock the door like a modern car.

Probably good I didn't cause he ended up dumping it shortly after because it gave up on him.

I took my D for emission testing and passed (good for another 2 years now). A lot of people bitch and moan about this, but I'm glad it happens. Here in Oregon, if we fail we don't pay until we pass the test. And in this case, I failed about two weeks ago due to having high CO. If I didn't have that test, I would never have known that I was running too rich and kept on hurting my MPG. After I failed, I reconnected my LC-1 wide band O2 sensor (which I installed a while back but never got around to really playing with) and discovered that when at idle, my AFR was about 13.5-14. The dwell was at the upper end, but within limits of the manual. So it occurred to me my narrow band O2 sensor is sending too low of a voltage which was making the Lambda system think the car was too lean, so it was enriching the mixture. Instead of fiddling with the narrow band O2 sensor, I simply unplugged it and connected the Lambda to the narrow band output of the LC-1. My AFR immediately jumped up to 14.5 or so. After that, I flew through emission testing.
Since I now have the LC-1 hooked up, I just need to figure out what I'm going to do with it. I'll probably do what Bitsyncmaster did and put in a selection switch to make it easy to adjust between two mixtures (one for performance and another for economy). I like how I now have "on the fly" mixture adjustment of an otherwise stock K-jet system!

So far today I took the D out to the store to pick up a few BTTF ornaments early this morning. Stopped for some coffee and a few bottles of wine and hit a garage sale promising "lots of tools" on the way home. The tools were all SAE, boo.

lol Unfortunately the primer held tight. I wish I could figure out whatever it was they used to prime this car. I'd paint all my other cars with it. Even chemical stripper has a hard time eating through it.
Took care of a nagging electrical problem with the passenger door-open switch for the interior and door clearance lamps.
In the past few months the switch seldom closed the circuit when the door opened. I could always get it to go by wiggling the switch plunger after the door opened.
Removed the switch, found there was a contact pad in it, then took a dressing file to it to renew the surface of the switch contact and re-mounted the switch.
The door switch works reliably again.

I tried taking photographs, but they don't at all seem to do justice in showing how phenomenally awesome they look as the light just glares.
The LEDs make the lenses glitter all crystallised, the colour is incredibly rich, and the instantaneous illumination is awesome! The front park/indicator doing its instant dimming between park and flash is especially cool!
In particular the amber indicators and white reverse lights looks the most amazing - here's one picture and, again although the it does not do justice, I've tried to compare between the right hand behind the old bulb and the left hand being the new LED. I'm really at a loss to get a photograph that shows how amazing the lens looks with the LED behind it.

Tried repeatedly to install LEDs in the cabin but they would never turn off/blow fuses - eventually ripped out the dimmer circuit and all was well!
Despite being really rapt with the exterior LEDs I installed the other week, I've been bothered by the door markers. Being made of black rubber the light just didn't spread to my liking - either with the old bulb or especially with the new LEDs.
To that end I toyed with lining the inside with alfoil to simulate a chrome reflector - the results were astonishing!!! As usual photographs do not do lighting justice - they are ten times better than this picture shows :)

You can also try and see what the effect is reversing the lenses.
Bitsyncmaster and I did that with a better spread of light, though you still can see it's a LED in there.
For the rearward LED I used a 9-LED unit, which is so long that I had almost no space between LED top and lens.
Using alu foil will only help if the LED units have LEDs that are pointed sideways.
The ones I used only have LED on top of the unit.
Hope the info helps.

Even with LEDs pointing up you can get a little refection off the lens. So I painted my black inside with aluminum paint. But if your LEDs are to close to the lens, you can pull the socket out of the rubber to get them as far from the lens as possible.

Measure the voltage with the solenoid disconnected. Also measure the resistance of the lock vs unlock side of the solenoid. If it's burned up inside it may sink the voltage that low. A burned solenoid will measure much lower than a good one (unless it's burned open). If it is good, you probably have a bad connection in the roof.

Thats a nice looking engine.
I had to fix a power supply issue to my i pad that I have in the back wall. So in order to get to that power distro for the pad, I had to remove 80% of the interior since everything is now interlocked together. The back wall comes out, remove all the speakers, then remove the entire back shelf system to get to the wireing, not to mention all the sound proof foam behind the wall too, then to trace the wireing, have to remove the center console and two of the knee pads since the brackets help hold it together then finally remove the fiberglass center. All to replace a 2 dollar part.
The good thing is that i did find a loose ground that i forgot to connect the last time i rewired the system.
Fun owning a Delorean. :)

Well let's see here. I'll just name off the things I've done lately (1-2 months).
1. Installed the new LED window switches:
14393
Installed a LED light in the glove box:
14379
3. Installed BitSync's solid-state based RPM relay.
4. New floor mats from Sean Lowe here in the community
14380
5. Created my own torsion bar rubber door seals:
14381
6. Now here's my project I've been working on for a while - fixing the 31-year-old power locking system. Warning - LONG STORY coming:
It ALL started by wanting to finally install Toby's door actuators. So that's where it started:
14382
So those were installed in the doors, and guess what - the door locks still didn't work. Now, I have DMCH's digital lock module, so the two biggest things that could be wrong had been covered. So then I take out all 4 door latch/lock mechanisms and thoroughly clean them with mineral spirits. The first two were out of the driver's side door, and we get them back in and working decently. The passenger ones I do with another owner outside of the "Thursday night tech sessions" we normally have. So we clean the passenger side ones, and find out - hey - they are pretty much unserviceable - so to keep my door in place, I have to re-install now defunct-old-non-repairable door latch/locks into my psgr door. Once I do that - yep - you guess it, they were frozen in place, and once I shut that psgr door, it WOULD NOT open again. Fast-forward two weeks, Ken Koncelik was able to get my psgr door open again, and this time I was ready. I installed - with help from 3-4 different owners holding the doors down for me and helping me get the correct orientation, brand new latch/lock mechanisms. These are the parts the latch down onto the striker pins on each side of your door - yeah - that was a fun time :P.
Here's a reference picture of the door latch/lock mechanisms for reference from DMCH's website:
14394
So we install those, and there was an INCREDIBLE difference in terms of manual door locking. In fact, before this, I could NOT lock and unlock my doors manually if inside the car - now - finally - I can lock and unlock my doors whether I'm inside or outside the car! Anyhoo, so that was good, but still - after the internal door rods were adjusted, still no dice when the module was hooked back up.
So at this point, I start measuring continuity in the wiring. Psgr side was good - driver's side had missing continuity in the red/purple (red/grey?) wire. So, now to the roof I go. First, remove the T-Panel:
14383
Then I broke loose the wire pigtail connectors that link the door to the wiring harness behind the electrical system. I found a pin that had been pushed back out of the female connection. I cleaned and applied contact grease to all the spades and female connections and plugged everything back up. At that point, the system from the driver's door worked both inside and out, but the psgr door wouldn't work right. So then I went back into the roof's wiring harness and worked on the psgr side. Once I was done, the psgr door worked perfectly, but the driver's door started acting funny - like the problem had literally flip-flopped sides. Then as time went along, the driver's side wouldn't even have power to send to the psgr side, so back I went into the roof and cleaned the connections thoroughly with sandpaper. The driver's side started working again, but the passenger side was still acting up and would not lock or unlock the passenger side. And it was too late to re-attach my T-panel, so home I drove from Cincinatti to Dayton with no T-Panel. Needless to say, the car wasn't driven the rest of the week.
So, I thought, well maybe my DMCH module is bad. I guessed that because back in 2006, my DMCH module arrived with the WIRING BACKWARDS. Now, I'm not saying DMCH did that - I'm just saying it was wrong. So to keep confusion to a minimum, I snipped the male plug off my old door lock module, soldered the wires in the right places. Fast-forward to present day - I thought - well, maybe something's wrong in the module. Dave over at DMCMW suggested I send my module in to have it tested in a properly working car. So I did, he reported back that it worked perfectly, and sent it back to me.
So, I get my module back, hook it up, and my doors worked - partly. See, the connector that hooked the door tension arm to the actuator literally broke in half - so I couldn't properly test my psgr side - oh, and my driver's side window stopped working. So, last Thursday (2 days ago), off I go to Thursday's tech session, locking and unlocking my doors the whole way just to make sure it was working. I get to the tech session, unlock the doors and get out. Some owners wanted to see the doors working, so I demonstrated - only to see the driver's side door all of a sudden stop locking the psgr door. To say the least, I was not pleased.
So, I wiggle the psgr door wiring connectors in the roof, nothing happens. Do the same with the driver's side, and all of a sudden, my door locks started firing on their own. I knew, at that point, I had found an issue. Now, I had addressed this wiring loom before; I was done fiddling around. I got up on the roof, pulled the driver's side connectors apart and took out each individual female wire from the wire connector. I took a set of pliers and gently but firmly tightened the female end so it would go on the male end with a much tighter fit, applied de-ox-it on the female end, plugged each one back into the male end just to make sure the female end WOULD go back in, applied contact grease on each female end, and finally hooked all the wires back into the female connector firmly. I did this for both the psgr wiring and the driver wiring female wires. Then I held the male end by the plug and more importantly, by the wires, while my friend grabbed the female wiring, and we pushed them together - making sure the wires did not back out. Those things were so tight that it took both of us pushing them together for the connectors to re-lock back into place. Needless to say, my driver's door has been working perfectly since, and the driver's side window worked again. Passenger door, still acting funny - BUT.....
Remember when I said we installed new latches? Well, each latch has 2 plastic arms - one of those arms has multiple holes, and if you put one of the tension rods in the wrong hole, you are going to have issues. Well, when installing the driver's side new latches, we could not remember which hole one of the arms went into. We referenced the psgr side, and Ken came over and let us know "Nope, wrong hole." So we fixed the driver's side, but we have not gotten to the passenger side - YET. That's what this Tuesday is for... :).
So yeah, needless to say, I have spent an hour or two in the doors. If you can avoid it, I'd highly recommend it ;).
So, finally here's some pictures:

Hmmm.... I'm almost positive *someone* does because I put a set onto Cliff S's polished stainless frame when mounting the radiator. No idea where he got them from though. He's got a lot of parts I've never seen anywhere else. Only person I know that actually has stainless coolant lines; then of course he took them a step farther and polished them to a mirrored finish.
EDIT: Both the brackets and the coolant lines are shown in this photo:http://photos.grenexmedia.com/Events/Delorean-Car-Show-2012/DCS-2012-Saturday/23670474_WG3VPH/1/1969910650_TPG9JKz/Large

Ok, I'll say it and collect my $0... DPI!
Also, great picture! Car does look good in low light with the shine off the stainless.
Quick update on what I've been doing: Last night started replacing my radiator. Had a new one from DMCMW sitting in the garage for a while waiting for me to have time. Right now the new one is mounted on 3 of the 4 mounting points. Need to finish mounting, hook up the plumbing, and reattach the shroud. Also while I had it out I replaced my working OEM fans with Toby's low power fans. Seemed like the right time to do it.

As much as I'd like to have the original look with the improved plastic bottle, I'm going stainless because it says to the world "I'm taking care of my car." Thinking years out if I were to ever sell the car it is something a novice buyer could point to easily and say "he took care of that problem."

Finally got around to pulling my leaky clutch slave cylinder today... my initial impression was that it wasn't nearly as bad as everyone has been saying. I had to two bolts out in a matter of minutes working from below.
Actually getting the slave cylinder out was another story though....After wrestling with it for a half hour I finally realized that the main reason it was so hard to get it out was the small coolant hose running from the driver's side head to the heater control valve. The hose sits right on top of the slave cylinder preventing you from pulling it up and out. My coolant system is all drained out anyway, so I just disconnected that hose, pushed it out of the way, and the slave cylinder came out with no trouble at all.
I disconnected the clutch fluid hard line at the bulkhead fitting on the chassis where it connects to the flexible braided hose and left the hard line connected to the slave cylinder. Once I had it on my bench I was able to get the hard line removed without twisting the tubing.
In total it only took me about an hour and most of the time was spent laying on my back staring upward wondering how the F&@k I was going to get the cylinder out with that coolant hose attached. So I just removed the coolant hose and the job became incredibly easy.

Careful how you lay things putting the heater hoses and control valve back. Too many of us can tell you that the little hot water valve can snap right in half if stressed unusually, and I think a lot of that has to do with how roughly it is handled and how it lays behind the motor. Congrats getting the slave out so easily, though!
Mark D
11-03-2012, 06:26 PM
That's a really good point to make. The valve does seem to be pretty fragile and the metal pivot arm can also can bend easily.
I've got a full coolant hose replacement kit including a new water valve so I wasn't too concerned at the time if I damaged the original one. For someone doing this under more normal circumstances I would second jawn101's advice about being really careful with the valve.
Also, since my coolant system is drained there wasn't much liquid that came out when I disconnected the hose. If someone is attempting to remove the hose as a last ditch effort to get the slave cylinder out, first be absolutely sure the car is cool, and second, be ready with a cap for the brass coolant tube on the head. I'd also use a pair of hose clamp pliers to pinch off the hose before removing it. Sticking a bolt in the hose afterwards is a good way to temporarily plug it until it's time to clamp it off again and reconnect it.

I did my oil change this morning (not too exciting, but it had to be done). Earlier this year my BlueTooth system went out so I decided to replace that until I found it it was cheaper just to replace the whole stereo then find an out of production BlueTooth interface for my old stereo. After getting the same brand of stereo, I figured it would be a simple swap as I could reuse the same wire harness and mounting cage. Well, after pulling the old system out, I made a few discoveries and here's where I'm at now:
14519
So that sucks since both the cage design and wire harness have changed over the past few years. I figured while I was there I would at least work on the climate control mode switch. While it works fine, it never clicked between modes. I had to be careful in not leaving it between two modes. I thought this was normal until about a year into ownership when I rode in another D and turned it's mode switch discovering it clicks between modes. So with the console out, I went ahead and pulled the mode switch and discovered the PO when replacing the diaphragm (something he told me he did shortly before I purchased it) had put grease on that little ball that makes it click. So I stripped the grease out and lubed the diaphram with silicone spray to reduce it's resistance and now it clicks and turns much easier too! I'll hook up my vacuum hand pump to test and insure it's not leaking now before reinstalling.

I would love to know the type of LEDs you use for the door lights.
This gives me a chance to compare them with what I use now.
Sorry didn't notice this - I currently have WLED-xHP9-T fitted, but the height of this means the top most SMD is against and causing a focal point on the lens, so will shortly switching to WLED-xHP5.

I don't know what the laws are in your neck of the planet... Here in the States the anchor systems are not required and you can use a car seat that's strapped in with the regular seat belt. Then the child's seat harness holds the kid.
Of course if the kids' old enough here then all you need is a booster seat and use the regular seat belt. OF course, as I said, your milage may vary.
That all being said - My 5 year old has been riding with me since he was 3 and a half.

Here in Canada, that anchor is mandatory in all provinces I think. I bought my Safety First anchor and bolt it down through the hole left by one of the battery strap attachement. With big washer, it sould not be a problem. I have not yet tried the booster seat with my 3 years old girl, but she sure would like to go out _ but the car is soon to be put in storage for the winter. I have just done an oil change last week-end. I'm hoping very much that there are going to be more warm and sunny days left before the snow comes in.

Put the DeLorean away for winter on Wednesday, though I still need to add a bit of stabilizer. I've come up with a few goals I'd like to get done over the winter and during next driving season:
-Fix the door lock on the passenger side door
-Get the speedo/tach operational
-Heat and properly reshape some interior trim pieces
-Possibly have the wheels refinished over winter
-Figure out why it intermittently hesitates/stumbles under acceleration (especially when cold)
-New air filter
-Attempt to better-fit the front and rear fascias (I'm going to have trouble with this one I think)
-Wheel balancing and alignment
-Maybe look into replacing what is necessary to fix the leak coming from the clutch pedal area (cylinder leak)
-Repaint the resister bracket in the engine bay and a few other misc parts that are showing surface rust
-Clean underneath (it's already clean, but I really want to keep it that way)

Nice! Just to clarify, are you looking to replace the fuel sender or the fuel pump? The fuel sender won't give you hot start problems, the fuel pump might. If you are looking for a fuel sender, I have a DMCH one I'm not using that I've been thinking about selling.

If this is a hot start problem, did you try following:
- Disconnect the cable connector from the CSV (blue connector and socket)
- Disconnect the cable connector (grey one, from the CPR) and connect to the CSV socket
- Start the car
Once the engine runs, disconnect and put each of the connectors to their original socket.
If this is true you may have electrical problems at the CSV or at the Thermo Time Switch.
It could also be the switch may be defective, or the CSV itself has a problem.
First test the positive voltage to both CSV and TTS.
If these are OK, check the TTS by connecting positive and negative pins in the connector.
Then start the car: immediate start? Replace the TTS.
Otherwise check the CSV for defects (leaking?)

There was a couple in the showroom looking at all the Delorean's. We started talking and when they brought out my car I gave them a ride. They were both giggling like little school girls. It is a hot start problem. When the engine is cold or cool, it starts up fine. It use to be able to start up when the engine was hot (normal operating temp) Ginven one try then on the second turn of the ignition it would start. Danny says it is the fuel sender more than likely. It isnt keeping positive pressure after the engine is turned off. I did when I first got the car last year replaced the thermo time switch. I know the fuel sender hasnt been changed in 30 years, so I think it needs to be replaced. Actually the last time I was at the shop danny mentioned it looked like it needed to be replaced. The hoses looked old and corroded around the ends. I will though tell him to check the CSV connectors and all.
Thanks for the advice.

Finally finished my coolant system work today. Primary reason for the work was to replace my leaking radiator (http://dmctalk.org/showthread.php?4902-Replace-Radiator-Cap-vs-Replace-Radiator), but while I was at it I also installed Toby's low power fans and a new stainless header bottle. Below are a few photos.
Now I just need to move my stainless header bottle label to the new one. Any thoughts on what type of adhesive to use? My initial thought is 3M VHB since it can take the heat, but there are several kinds of VHB. Any recommendations?

The VHB's I've seen are too thick and/or too lumpy after cutting to size for a label adhesion job. If you can find a 0.005in. or thinner linerless version of VHB you might be OK. Or, if the old label comes off cleanly then maybe a 3M spray contact adhesive might work - not sure about the thermal limit on that.
Alternate approach: How about buying a NOS label (P/N 108749) and installing that to your new coolant tank, leaving the label on the old tank? Saves the trouble of removing the old label without somehow mangling it, much less adhering it again.

I drove it!Been sitting for a couple of weeks if not more while I was doing a cosmetic re-fresh of the driver`s side door panel.Put in a new pull down strap while I was at it.Anyway the weather got into the 60`s and I hit the road.It was great, but, will only get better. As soon as I finish my Xmas shopping the "D" gets hubs and rockers and the heater control knob rebuilt. Then tires before March and I should be good for another driving season, not counting continuing cosmetic improvements.6864Steve.

Sorry, I should have been more clear on this. I have a stainless label (not paper) for my header bottle that I need to move to the new bottle. It currently has a foam like adhesive backing to it which is why I was guessing I should use VHB. Spray adhesive is a good thought as well. I'll look into it.

Standard 3M VHB (red backer, grey foam) will work great for your stainless label transfer needs. I wouldn't recommend a spray adhesive here.

I guess they're afraid that if you have the gauge you'll be tempted to make performance enhancing mods to the engine which will then tempt you to drive like a maniac. *shrug*

Over the last couple of weeks:
1. Fully installed Toby's door actuators. When I say "fully installed" I mean....
A. Changing out all 4 latch/locks from both doors
B. Doing continuity checks through the wiring from the door lock module wiring in the harness, through the roof, to the doors
C. Re-adjusting nearly all the tensioning rods in the doors
D. Re-installing the DMCH module
E. Adjusting the tension on the wire from the driver's side door handle to the bell crank
F. Cleaning the contact points on the bell crank
G. Re-adjusting the leaflet tabs on the bellcrank so that they would "swipe" across the contact points and not get hung-up like they were on the passenger side
Yeah....That was a more in-depth repair than I thought it was going to be, but I learned a LOT about the doors....
2. Adjusted the legnth of the spring in one of the tail light bulb sockets causing erratic lighting issues (PJ Grady boards).
3. Installed a new oil light sensor.
4. Installed LEDs in the front bumper marker lights and rear turn signals with matching LED turn signal relay. The only lights that are not LED'd now are the battery light, front dome light (DPO superglued it into my headliner) and headlights. Everything else has LEDs.
5. Installed John Hervey's 2GA and 4GA grounding wires. One goes from the battery to the transmission - the other goes from the oil pan/exhaust bracket to the frame.
6. Re-installed my T-Panel so it does not get knicked by the doors when they are opened.
7. Installed Toby's Wings-A-Loft remote lock unlock/Door launchers kit.
8. Installed aftermarket cupholders in the driver and the passenger footwells.
Things coming over winter:
1. VOD tear down to replace either a leaking water pump or a loose hose - either way a new water pump and hoses are going on.
2. New headliners - finally after 9 years.
3. Install DMCH's new fuel/sender combo.
And these two are more for "later in 2013"
1. New door rubber seals - both inner and outer.
2. Go true dual exhaust.

Hey,
Would you care to elaborate on this one? My car does somewhat the same thing, but I'm not sure what to do about it. Thanks!
As promised, here is my explanation. I learned this as I went, so follow my instructions at your own risk.
1. First thing is to remove the door trim around the T-Panel as pictured. Next, you'll want to remove the three screws circled in this picture. This is done on both sides of the T-panel.
15492
2. Lift your louvers and take out the thre screws as pictured that hold the back plastic trim piece.
15493
Once you do this, the trim is hold by the T-panel by four stainless steel tabs. You basically rotate the plastic piece out from underneath the stainless steel tabs.
3. Now, everything that holds the T-panel down should be off - with the exception of the 2x sided tape that may or may not be underneath your T-panel. The key here is to gently raise the back of your T-panel up gently and wiggle the T-panel from side to side as seen in this picture below. This is where it helps to have a second person so each of you can be on one side of the car as you both wiggle the T-panel back and forth. It is the easiest way to break the adhesive property of any 2x tape that may be adhering the T-panel to the roof.
15494
You've done this to basically be able to move the T-panel freely. Three things were crucial for me to get it to where the T-panel did not touch my doors as they open and shut. These three things were:
A. How high is the "vertical" part of the T-panel (the part between the doors) - as if it was too low, my doors scraped the edges of it, and if it was too high you could actually see underneath the main body of the vertical part of the T-panel.
B. How high was the horizontal part of my T-panel (the portion of the T-panel closer to the rear wheels) - because if it was too high, my louvers would not clear it, and if too low it would force the vertical portion of my T-panel to be too high, resulting in a huge gap to where you could see underneath my T-panel.
C. The spacing between the rear quarter panels and the horizontal ends of the T-panel. This was used as a good "reference point" for when the adjustments were sufficient, and that my doors should clear the T-panel. I will provide a side as a REFERENCE ONLY, as I have 2x sided tape on both the vertical and horizontal parts of my T-panel to help out with height adjustments for my doors to clear the T-panel.
15495.
After all this is said and done, you have to put all your screws back in to help anchor the T-panel down to ensure that your adjustments are correct. I just about drove myself nuts for over an hour trying to get everything to work WITHOUT THE SCREWS IN. Put the screws in - loosely at the least - they will make the difference of your doors clearing or not clearing your T-panel.
I would suggest having someone help you with all this, as a lot of stuff is happening on both sides of the T-panel. Most of all, be calm and patient. I think it took my friend, Jason, and myself about 2 hours to get it 100% the way I wanted it. Then again, I'm a slow learner ;) ...
Things to keep in mind as you re-assemble....
Place the T-Panel down, THEN re-install the back plastic trim piece underneath your louvers.... don't go the opposite way...trust me on this one ...
On my car, the three screws that hold that rear-plastic trim underneath your louvers....those holes DO NOT line up well. This is definitely a good job to have two people for. You can line up two of them - the third is one of those "hold your breath, push with all you got to just even see the hole that the screw is supposed to go into, get it at a very bad angle, and somehow get the screw in..."
Patience...Patience...Patience...

I removed my fuel accumulator to install a replacement. If you look at the pictures, you can see the original "Black" undercoating that the factory sprayed on the 1983 models while they were sitting at the dock. That must mean, the fuel accumulator has never been replaced! This just goes to show you, fuel system parts last a long time if the car gets driven all the time (124,000 miles and counting). Still had all the original fuel hoses attached as well. All of the "rubber" coating had fallen off leaving the fabric braid exposed. Got new hoses for when I install the new part.

Chris,
I Retired an 85 Audi coupe w (k-Jet). The Original Accumulator was still performing normally. Never a hot start issue. The exterior of the accumulator looked like pile of rust (midwest road salt) The car had 400,000 miles on it. I mentioned this to Stephen W. several ago. He said, the difference in component longevity was due to my frequent use of the Audi (It kept the Rudder diaphragm flexible) as opposed to the infrequent use a Delorean sees. The diaphragm tends to age harden with inactivity and lose its flexibility.

A few of the items I've recently worked on:
Finally adjusted my door striker pins - one of the passenger door latches has never locked into its second position and one of the driver door latches needs a good slam to engage second position. Finally got both of them aligned beautifully and each drive since has been amazingly quiet since I've been used to the rattling!
Remote central locking installed. Endeavoured to also get remote door release going but had issues with the driver door actuator - some amazing teamwork between DMC NorthWest and DMC MidWest had me with a replacement actuator in Australia a couple days later!
A few odds and ends such as idle tweaking, new engine cover grilles (crappy Photoshop below of combined before & after as I forgot to take a picture mid-install), illuminated door sills, etc.

I completed covering the binnacle with leather today. I used a single piece of leather, joined at the bottom. The only tacks needed were on the back and to come in around the front edge. I included an underlay of felt on the top and sides to give it a better feel and hide some of the imperfections from the cracked surface underneath.

Wow! Great job.
Got the new DMC EU radiator fitted, took it out for a quick spin - want to watch it for any possible leaks for a couple of days.

Had a nice 15 mile drive. Hadn't started it in more than 10 days since I had been away for the holidays, but she started right up and drove like a dream. It's still really nice weather here, but just a touch too cold for a car wash in my opinion. Shame, since she really needs one. Should be up in the 60s next weekend so I'll likely do it then.
I do think my reverse lights might be out so I need to check that. My reverse switch was pretty roached so it might be time for one of those.

Had to walk away from 2510 today.
I've got new springs and shocks coming. I've been dismantling the brakes and original suspension but some of the ball joints are stuck solid. One tie rod ball joint, both lower ball joints and one upper joint are jammed into the front hubs. I didn't have this trouble with 3205. Made me frustrated enough to turn off the lights for the day.

Replaced my fuse box today. I had the typical toasty fuse #7, among other cruddiness. Went pretty smoothly, albeit slowly. My knees are KILLING me now from kneeling all day working on this. I'm gonna be paying for it tomorrow! I don't know how some of you guys did this without taking out the seat. I can't imagine there being enough room to work with it in there. While I was in there I also replaced the connectors on the cooling fan breaker. They were looking a bit suspect.
Before:

Wires marked, connectors replaced, soldered, with heat shrink and ready to go into the new box (once untangled a bit). My OCD nature necessitated that left side went back into left side and right went back into right:

After:

On a side note, when I pulled the passenger seat I found this:
15787
Tom Petty on side A, Madonna on side B. It's dated December, 1989.
It is amazing how much of an improvement this made. Fresh, clean connections and fuses can work wonders! Voltage gauge reads properly now (was hit or miss before), lights are brighter, no more "fuzzy flicker" of parking brake light or seat belt light, I'm sure there are other things working far better behind the scenes as well. I was ready to begin addressing all these issues separately, but the fuse box took care of them all at once! Awesome!

I completed recovering the kneepads with leather and relocating the stock vents (slightly modified) from the door and the center console. I liked the vents in the knee pads from the photos of the DMC-EV, but I didn't like the modern looking vents. Putting A/C vents in the doors was a bad design decision from the start - one of those "hmm interesting" but never to be repeated mistakes. I bought two sets of aftermarket vents but they proved to be too small or two modern. I wanted vents that were the right size and suited the period of the Delorean and the stock vents turned out to fit the bill (although a tight fit in the case of the RH driver's side kneepad). In Houston Texas you need A/C that blows as directly as possible on to the passengers!!!

Looks good! Novel idea, too. This would also serve us Florida people well!

I have the door vents blocked off with the DMC vent plugs. This forces maximum air flow out the center vents. It's almost like a tornado the car when I have the vents pointing straight between the seats. The air will swirl behind me and flow forward along the doors. It's rather impressive.

Very interesting. I've always thought that at some point I'd like to do a "full leather" interior in my car. Dash, centre console, binnacle, door panels, pillars, and arm rest. I'd like to keep it with a "fine grain" and keep some of the ripples where applicable (door panels, console, knee pads).

Spent the whole day with her and really didnt do a whole lot. I replaced the coolant return hose and the hot water valve and hose (all the clamps were facing up so it was almost impossible to take them off - what a nightmare).. Replaced the light switch for the driver door ( the little rubber nubs are for the end of the swich? i hope). Put my new water pump together (the wp back was scored on the inside from the impellar. At least im not replacing it for nothing i guess). Tried to drill out the 2 seized bolts from the water pump with not luck.. Prob just made it worse .. Damn, the water pump saga just wont end.

Reinstalled my freshly painted rear harness/resistor bracket. Hopefully I put all the wires back correctly. Also cleaned my K&N air filter.

i agree about the vents originally in the doors. Waste. I like what you did with your vents. I re did mine like the ev delorean. I acquired new vents from a BMW at the junk yard and put them in my knee pads. The front vents i closed off at the distro box behind the stereo and ran new hoses from the side vents to the new openings in the knee pads.

Sunday going to work, a few guys taking their cars to a car show freaked out over my car and we did a quick photo shoot with them. Was kind of fun.

Put a new AC fascia decal on the plastic panel. Looks like making custom LEDs for this unit will be hard to do since you can't change the thickness of the plastic. I'm still going to experiment but don't want to do any cutting on that plastic since it's a part you can't get anymore.

I did the same... Closing the outlets to the centre vents. Nothing permanent, but it is secure. I closed it with 40 mil rubber sheeting and large cable ties. My radio and center vent location is being replaced with a tablet computer and an amp. I routed the bottom vents to both sides of the kneepads.

i uued my dremel and sheered off the front vents off the box creating a flat surface, then epoxed a piece of plexi against it and rtv around the edges. I needed all that space for the pre amp and double din HU.

Two things if you don't mind:
1. Is it a Spec I exhaust? I haven't unboxed mine yet, but I'm curious if it comes with instructions.
2. Can you let me know how the install goes and how long it takes you?
Thanks.
